Insect stings…

I was walking down my own driveway yesterday carrying a bag of garbage to the trash dumpster when suddenly I felt a sharp, burning pain in my lower arm…a hornet or yellow jacket had stung me!

Such stinging insects tend to become aggressive and crazy in late summer, and you often don’t see them coming. The pain they inflict is disproportionate to the size of the creature, almost maddening. I applied a “sting kill” capsule to the site, but it only brought me limited relief. My arm still hurts with movement the day after.

How about you? Do you have any sting experience stories, or home remedy suggestions for their treatment? 🐝

when i was a kidling I went into old shed on property and
got way in to a jumble of junk, and promptly BUMBLEBEE's
started stinging me and chased me out, bad deal, stung 10 times or more, they had to take me to docs.....since then deathly afraid of bees and wasps.......

In Sept. the bees, etc. that we see have been locked out of the hive and so are more confused, aggressive, maybe even sad or angry. Bees are pretty smart. Hate hornets.

We have problems with yellow jacket wasps. They build nests in the most creepy places like in the door jams. Lately they have been coming in the house. I guess because it is cooling off. I have been stung many times over the years. Once I was cleaning a window out doors and one leaped on the bridge of my nose and stung me. I tried to knock it off but it stayed latched to my nose. I had to use both hands to knock it away.

I have used baking soda mixed with water...it is supposed to suck some off the poison out. Sometimes a Benadryl pill will help, and aspirin.

The best cure I've found is Benadryl. I use a liquid application that works with chigger bites. I never thought about using it for wasp stings or bee stings. Those I usually just tough it out, because unlike chiggers, the irritation does not last for several days. But the next time I get a sting, I'm going to try Benadryl and see what happens.

Stung many times as a child but only by mosquitos now. I use "After Bite" and that takes care of the itching. Its active ingredient is baking soda, but the "inactive" ingredient is ammonia. The combo does the trick.

All I know is that if the venom is acidic you can deal with the pain if you quickly apply a paste of bicarb soda or a wet blue bag, the kind that our mothers used in the rinse water to make the whites look whiter.

I found this to be true when my small son unknowingly stood in a bull ant nest and they ran up inside his trouser legs and stung him several times. I immediately debagged him and applied wet blue bag to his legs and the pain dissipated very quickly. Usually the pain lasts for hours.

Stung multiple times during my life. I use the baking soda paste remedy. You have to endure some pain though. Then there's the intense itching as the sting heals. Maybe Benadryl would be good for that. Not crazy about yellow jackets, but they keep the gnat population in check so just avoid their nest until the season changes. The cold puts them down for good.

Stung/bit by hornets, wasps, ants, tiny no seeums, and chiggers
Didn't know what a chigger was 'til I lived down south
Those little devils love lawns
The bites last forever, at least the itch does

In my thirties I got stung by what was probably a night hornet (it was dark so I didn't see what it was, but there was one buzzing around outside my window at night sometimes so they were active at the time). The pain was awful and my arm was red for hours. Not sure if that was a normal reaction or if I was a tad allergic.

Thank you all for the tips.

I was stung by a wasp 10 days ago and my arm still doesn't feel right. The first 4 days were pretty bad, even though I took double doses of Kirkland Extra Strength Allergy Relief (cetirizine). I'll buy some Benadryl for future use; it has a different active ingredient.

At age 10 I got stung by 14 bees, and I was mildly allergic to bee stings for some years after that. The bee sting allergy seemed to go away eventually.

I have a horrible wasp nest inside the roof above my front door. They are coming out now (Sept) and its a dash from the door to wherever I need to go, and on my return to the house, I have to peer around to make sure they don't see me before I dart into the house and slam the door shit with a phew of relief!

Poultice of baking soda and water paste. Or, tobacco and water paste. These are the things my Mom used when we were kids. She always made sure the stinger was not still in our flesh and would remove with tweezers. I have been lucky enough to not have been stung as an adult.

You need to get that thing gone. I use my high pressure sprayer twenty feet away to flood them out. Then I go back later and spray the area with insect repellent. Spray that in there really good. That will keep them from coming back looking for home or rebuilding. If you can't do it, get someone to help, a neighbor or if you have a son or nephew to deal with it. Be careful!!!

Recently, I was driving along & felt a terrible pain in my thumb. I didn't notice a bee on my steering wheel. I must have grabbed him while driving. Since it was 30 years since my last sting, I'd forgotten how much it hurt! I was about to pull the stinger out with tweezers, then I remembered that injects more venom. I scraped it out with a pocket knife.

15 years earlier, I was competing in a shooting competition. When I completed one event & let my arm down to my side, it felt like someone put a lit cigarette on the inside of my forearm. A Yellow Jacket was on my shirt & when my arm touched him, he nailed me.
I could swear I heard him laughing at me as he flew away. 😂

what strength is the Cetirizine that you used ?

When my daughter was about 7 or 8, my friend and I and her kids.. all went for a walk across the fields here on a beautiful sunny day . I was wearing a mini skirt.. bare legs and sandals.. and suddenly I felt this almighty sharp pain in my inner thigh.. immediately I felt dizzy and almost passed out. My friend saw that it had been a Hornet.. I never saw it.. but the pain was incredible... much worse than the pain of bees or wasps that U'd been stung by as a child..

As an outdoors person, have been bit by a long list of parasites with mosquitoes most often. A couple weeks ago while doing close-up photography along our coast, I may have picked up some chiggers that are uncommon in the region. Each day am seeing a couple itchy red spots. Have been repeatedly dousing with isopropyl alcohol giving the tiny suckers hangovers and there is still one left.

10 mg cetirizine hydrochloride each . I took 2 a day for 4 days (double dose).

I see now that they're expired (March 2021). Hmm. Better buy that Benadryl right away! I seldom take anything (don't even have aspirin in the house), but I like to have antihistamines on hand.

I bluddy hate Mosquitoes.. we have some real humdingers in Spain as well... they're called Tiger mosquitoes.. and they cause a great deal of damage.. My neighbour nearly lost her foot due to a Tiger Mozzie bite...

Fortunately we very rarely get them in the UK..altho' because of our very hot summer this year we did see a few, and I had to spray myself with Deet every morning..

Yes I wondered, because 10mg is the normal dose.. at least here anyway. I have them right her in my desk drawer..

I didn't know it was safe to take a double dose.. that's handy to know. I hope you get relief from that itching soon...

I have one in the house right now. He is hiding somewhere in the den. He likes to come out and bite me as soon as I am in the room. I have tried to swat him with my hand, I have put out a little container of vinergar, no dice. I put out a little container with sweet wine. He still evades capture and death. How long, he just landed on my arm and I got him, I think! No evidence of his squash on the arm and hand/ Anyway how long can these things live? I guess I have to wait and see if I dealt the death blow. LOL
