A lot of things are labeled "love" when they are not.I agree with your argument that it depends, and too much self love might create trouble perhaps in folks minds, plus mindless adulation is a threat but irrational behaviour has more than one cause of course.
At the same time how rational would any of us be had we never had any love at all in our lives of any kind, so love in an answer there isn't it?
