Jury Duty

Here where I live they would have sent out the sheriff to haul you in. They do that routinely.
Exactly what makes our justice system the joke that it is. They try to force people who are totally unsuitable for jury duty to be jurors.

@Butterfly

Surprised they didn't haul him in for his nasty disrespect and name calling to the court employee - assuming his story is true and not embellished.
On what planet is disrespect a crime? They have my address; if they could legally arrest me, they would have.
And, when someone talks like an idiot, it's not a crime to call them an idiot. She was an idiot. Do you respect everybody, whether they're entitled to it or not?

The one thing I didn't like about serving on the jury was being portrayed like the boogeyman. By that I mean, we were the "jury", and IF we found you guilty, "your lousy ass was going to prison for years and years, so you better take your chances with the DA than us radical bunch of bastards." So, settle now before that jury gets to you. Everybody was all set to hear a case. We were asked a lot of questions, and finally selected as a jury. Seconds before, we were to start a case, they came running in saying they settled. I was selected to hear six cases-all were settled minutes before we were to start. The idea of playing "chicken" didn't sit well with me.

In New Jersey you are exempt from jury duty at age 75. I've
been called several times. In the beginning I would just rip up the summons, then they started to crack down and fine you if you didn't acknowledge it. In later years I worked in the health field and was exempt. These last few years I haven't been called, thank goodness. I'd go crazy sitting around like that and parking is horrible around the court house. I have no desire to waste my time on jury duty. One more year to go and I'm safe.

Yes, there are some cases I would not want to serve on, like child or animal abuse.

One of the things that was hard about the trial I was on was having to explain some of the things to one of the men on the jury. He wanted to know exactly what the word rape meant. The other guys laughed at his ignorance ,but one of the women explained it to him. I'm really happy that he understood the meaning.

This is interesting (well, to me anyway...).
Got a jury summons for next week and instructed to check-in today for what's to come. Logged into the site and got this:

"Service Fulfilled

Juror Badge Number: xxxxxxxxx
Name: "XXX"

You have fulfilled your service and do not need to report. You will receive a new summons if you are needed again in the future."

Sure didn't expect that. Was kinda looking forward to it as, you know, something to get me out of the house for a change.
But . . . Cool!

When I had jury duty, we sat in a room for the whole day and waited and waited until called, or not called at all, and did the same thing for a week. I got the call once but didn't make the cut. Another time I was an alternate but was excused when I wasn't needed.

Once I got called for federal, but got out of it since I had just gotten out of the hospital after an accident.

I have been called three times. Some people never get called like my brother.

I have been called many times in the past and actually found witnessing the courtroom process, albeit somewhat boring, very interesting.
Once while going through the selection process I was dismissed. I asked the judge, "Am I outta here?" When he replied that I was free to go I said, "Cool." He laughed. Some judges are . . . well, cool.

think i may have been called 3-4 times. each tim started with a questionnaire. then got card... you're #xyz... call 1-800-xxx-xxxx after 5:00 on sunday (date). told to call back at 10 the next morning... not needed yet. call at 6:00, still not to my number. was out on jury duty/vacation for a week.

I served on a jury in 1980, an armed robbery/burglary case which was interesting. Was called many times over the next 30 years, but was excused because of being employed with law enforcement agencies. Last year I did get called / picked for a jury, but the trial ended before it started, as the defendant apparently accepted the D.A.'s plea deal.

I guess I am strange I always wanted to be called for jury duty. The one time I was called several of us arrived to the government building for the court, a sign on the door said we were excused as the trial wouldn't be held that day. I assume the perp plead guilty.

I served on a jury back in 1981. Drunk driving offense. We found the guy guilty. Read later in the newspaper the guy got probation.
^^^ One of the reasons I won't be a part of a corrupt, pathetic, useless justice system.
"Civic Duty?" LOL.

Was called many times over the next 30 years, but was excused because of being employed with law enforcement agencies.
Same here. Was called but was excused because of being in law enforcement in the military for 23 years. In fact when my son was called for jury duty when asked what kind of work his father did and he answered law enforcement in the military they stopped the questions and excused him also.

I submitted my last audiogram, when I was called, about six months ago. Result: Permanent exemption.

I never liked the process, I never was picked. A waste of my time, times four.

Don't even get me started on the whole very unfair jury trial system, with lawyers manipulating the selection process to try to slant things in their favor even before opening arguments.
This is exactly how I feel. The jury system is not the most efficient way of trying someone. Instead of having members of the public, most of whom would prefer not to be there, there should be professional jurors. We have magistrates judging minor offences, so why not for more serious crimes?
