Thousands of supporters are calling for the reinstatement of British Columbia conservation officer Brian Casavant, who remains suspended for refusing to destroy two black bear cubs Sunday after their mother was killed for repeatedly breaking into a Vancouver Island resident’s freezer for meat.An online petition in support of Bryan Casavant was close Thursday to achieving its goal of 75,000 signatures, which would be sent to B.C. Environment Minister Mary Polak. Perhaps as a result of the pressure, Casavant’s pay has since been reinstated, while an investigation into the matter continues.

The genes which overcame her natural avoidance of humans and induced her to depend on them for food are present in her cubs, and will be passed on still further until eventually one of her descendants will kill.

Sad though it is, there is only one way to eradicate them.

Better mourn bear cubs now than someone's three year old granddaughter in the future.

I'm not sure that that's a genetic trait - more like a learned behavior. If it were true, though, perhaps we ought to do the same thing to the children of human killers ...

Yes that is now the generally accepted civilised practice, apart from orphans, injured and the like.

There is a constant traffic in animals between zoos for breeding purposes. For instance our local zoo has just taken delivery of a Sumatran tiger.
