New hobby: Scotch!

Back in school days, a date brought a bottle of Scotch to share at our gathering. He was so excited because he kept seeing ads or people in movies ordering a Scotch. It was a huge letdown. We all hated it. We weren’t exactly experts on anything as all of us were under the legal drinking age. It was a few years before I had another Scotch and then it became my drink of choice for a bit. I know there’s a bottle or two of something in the cabinet. I never even think of drinking it any more.

Any Scotch aficionados here? I hope so because I'm ready to explore. So far...I haven't gotten so far, just have been buying Cutty Sark, a blended Canadian Scotch. I like it, but all I know are the brands of spirits available at the local supermarket. A friend of ours at the fitness center is Scotish, I asked her and she gave me a list:
Oban, (mild)
Talisker, (strong)
Lagavulin, (very strong)
Glenkinchie (moderate)
Dalwhinnie (floral and sweet)
Cragganmore (moderate)
McCallan, moderate.
All single malts
Let's hear about your experiences and your preferences. ;)
Was Hubby tipple ….talisker….but not any more 🙁

There's a lot of recipes on Google for making Tia Maria cocktails, but I just drink it straight. My recipe: A sip of Tia Maria, a sip of coffee...repeat until gone. It's a little luxury in my hum-drum life! (Some people put a shot of Tia Maria straight in their coffee.)
Thanks Caroln, I do love Baileys so I think I will love this too ;)

My favourite is Laphroaig. It is a single malt whisky. It has a distinct peaty flavour.

So, maybe kind of smoky? If I'm going to do this Scotch addiction habit hobby right I need to learn how to use the descriptive lingo. ;)

I got into the Glenlivet bottle this evening that I picked up earlier. Had some neat, and some more mixed with club soda(for effervescence).
I like it, is I would say smooth, a wee bit more personality than what I've had.

Yes, that describes the flavour well.

We are just learning. There's one local distillery that grows their grain just up the road from us. Well try that first. Also the web magazine Outsider.com has a section on what's new in the whiskey, scotch, bourbon world. Also news on Yellowstone!

I'm a bourbon drinker, but occasionally wander into Scotch. Have you spent any time on The Whiskey Exchange (sales site)? It's a fun way to read quick summaries of dozens of different whiskies. Japanese whiskies have improved tremendously, btw, with a very pleasant, clean profile. I had the Hibiki 12 at a restaurant a few yrs ago. It's no longer sold, but was delightful, a very good 'sipping' whiskey.

You can find The Whiskey Exchange Scotch category at: Scotch. You might also want to Google for whisky review sites. I do this for bourbons at odd times when I think about it, although I pretty much have all the bourbon I need already, LOL.

NY Times recently ran an article on a new artisanal whiskey style the US government will be recognizing, of American Single Malt Whiskey: American Single Malt Whiskey.

I used to have a school principal who loved his Scotch with water. About 3 years ago, my late wife and I toured Scotland and we enjoyed touring some of the distilleries. Apparently, single malt and the blended are not the same thing. Unfortunately, Scotch is an acquired taste. I have been a rum drinker for decades and I'm just too old to change. Enjoy your drink because life really is short!

Note, it is not Glenlivet, but "The Glenlivet" and The Glenlivet 18 yo is one of my favourites.
Also on my favourite list:-
Lagavulin 16 yo
Glenfarclas 105 and a lesser known one, Sweet Smoke from the Aisla bay distillery.

Another two lesser known ones near me are Glen Garioch (Glen Geery) in Old Meldrum and Glen Deveron in Banff.
