New Scam

We just had an election in this country. Before election night I would get these phone calls from the "People's Party" whoever they are. I never answered one call. I don't like political hacks phoning me.

They truly are slimy.

At some point we too could become the vulnerable. That’s another scary part of this.
Exactly so, Jules. My father-in-law had an extremely complicated job and was nobody's fool even ten years earlier. DH & I could see that he was slipping some, but didn't seem to be dangerously naive. He could barely notice the changes in himself.

This morning I received a text that I assume is a scam of some sort.

The message had a Texas telephone number and a message saying that the most recent AT&T bill has been paid. Here is a little gift for you.

Has anyone else received a similar text?
I have. And I get calls from Direct TV, too. I don't have either ATT or Direct TV. I don't own my home, but I get those solar panel calls and my car never had a car repair warranty or Amazon Prime, but I get those calls. I used to hand the phone to Paxton when he first started talking. He loved getting those calls.

I answer all calls, because it might be from CPS or Family Services, and their calls always say "Restricted" or display no ID at all. But I just say Hello and wait, and then I hang up and tap "block number" if it's a scam.

I got a call from an alleged RCI (exchange club) representative telling me I could make money selling my available "Extra vacations". Those are bookings at very cheap prices. I've used them in the past but would never consider buying a week then selling it. Besides that, my timeshare sent out an email that warned of this scam. Before I got the words "I'm not interested' out good, the person with the very distinguished voice hung up.
I finally answered a call from an unknown number (which I don't usually do) that turned out to be the car warranty people. I asked why they keep calling me about a warranty on a car I don't have. He apologized and said I'd be taken off their list. It's amazing how many scams and scammers there are in the world.

Most of these obvious scams are varying degrees of annoyance. The ones that really worry me are the ones that aren't quite so obvious or not obvious at all. It's really sad we have to be constantly on guard to protect ourselves from all the piranhas and leeches out there today. We're hoping technology will eventually protect us from them when it's technology that has enabled a lot of them access to us in the first place. Truly sad I say. Don...

One of those scam outfits kept calling again and again, with a recording telling me to press 2 if I am interested, press 9 to be put on their Do Not Call list. I know you're not supposed to even respond to that, but this has been going on for months, and they are driving me crazy. A couple of days ago, I finally pressed 9 in desperation. The recording said very pleasantly, "You have successfully been placed on the Do Not Call list."

An hour or so later, I got the exact same recorded call, coming from a different number. I always put those calls on "block," which doesn't stop them at all. They just call again from a different number.

Sometime when I get call I dont say anything and after 20 seconds it hangs up and I figure it must have been a robo caller. Sometimes I say this is Lawrence answering machine and leave a message after the beep, then I say beeeep and then they hang up. Sometimes when I am talking to a person I would listen to them and start talking to them. I had a couple when they said they were the police and needed money so I told them they make more money than I ever made and why should I give them money then I say no to donate to their fund and that there are to many scams going on so I do not know who to believe. A couple of times a political person calls and wanted me the sign some things to get rid of a politician and I told them that I was all for that politician and like what he has accomplished, then the caller says goodby and hangs up. Several times a guy (Dave) called and wanted to check my house roof and put new shingles on, we talked and chatted about his company would do it and I told him I would just call my sons and give them beer when they were replacing my roof. He told me about how dangerous that would be drinking beer and puting on a roof and so on then he said good by and hung up. Then he called again at least three more times on different days he called trying to shingle my house and I would say Hi Dave how are things going for you it good to hear from you again and he would laugh and we would just chit-chat about things. On the last time he called I think he had his buddies listening in on the call and I could hear them laughing in the background.

Just thought I'd put out there that the scam calls are still coming. I usually don't get these but this morning it was an "your Amazon account is compromised." Something like "one thousand, forty dollars." On some unprobeable notion that they record I stated "yeah right scam" and hung up. Of coarse there were the option to "press 1." I do have an amazon account. No fear it's compromised.

I did the same thing once with the "warranty" people. A really dumb-sounding girl kept repeating that my warranty was about to expire, and I kept repeating, "For which car? I have more than one car." She seemed really flustered, and just kept answering, "Your car. You know. The car you bought." I finally got tired of it and hung up.

I answered the phone once, listened to the telemarketer with his spheel and then ask him " what time do you eat dinner where you are". He told me and then ask why I wanted to know. Said "so I know when to call you back and interrupt your delicious meal.
