Newsweek reports United States is the 2nd most hated country in the world

I would not expect someone from England to agree! Your newspapers and media have tried to tear down for USA forever! You all would be speaking German if it was not for the USA!

This type of rhetorical sledgehammer is often used to shutdown discussion, so instead of shutting it down lets open your point up. Most Brits are prepared for this type of nonsense, as are other nations who hear the words, “If it wasn’t for the US you would be…” It’s become almost a ritual in these types of conversations.

I can’t ever recall reading anything about a Nazi German policy of changing our language to German had Germany successfully invaded England and the greater part of the UK. Germanys abandonment of Operation Sea Lion had nothing to do with the US, and everything to do with the RAF during the battle of Britain, 1940.

So I can only presume you are privy to some version of history the rest of the world knows nothing about. You might want to consider starting a separate thread titled, You All Would Be Speaking German If It Wasn’t for the USA! and we can explore the ignorance there.

Knock yourself out, I’ll come and join you.

I think Americans have a post WWII concept of the rest of the world. Most of it lays in destruction, poverty, and depends on the US- the sole, shining star of wealth, prosperity and freedom. Almost all of that is no longer true. Today, most nations are wealthy, prosperous and have some personal freedoms. Unfortunately, I believe other nations view the US as a gun crazy wild west shooting gallery with crime ridden streets,
major corruption, and little respect for others.

But thankfully not necessarily in a Carry On Cowboy kind of way.

I thought John Wayne singlehandedly won the war in the Pacific??

Did he also win the Battle of Britain and end The Blitz?

Is this what I’d categorise as classic Aussie wit? Something I’ve got a bit of a soft spot for.

I wonder… was Chuck Norris Churchill’s main military advisor? Chuck keeping Hitler awake at night just knowing that Chuck existed. Oh, hang on, I’m getting two people mixed up. Chuck was only involved in an advisory capacity. It was Rambo who kept Hitler awake at night.

History can be ever so confusing at times. To some.

USA is a democracy - been there and enjoyed it tremendously - you have a democratic model of govt - have elections to vote in a party who then elects their own president I guess ? - sounds like a copy of UK; Oz ;Nz etc etc - welcome to the club - who you vote for is your business ; how you select your president is your business - and over time they have ranged from V.Good to Not so very Good - that's the price of freedom - welcome to the free world!!

"A republic if you can keep it."
Benjamin Franklin

I think most countries confuse jealousy with hate.

A lot of people leave their home country to begin a new life and get away from the wars, poverty and drug cartels that have destroyed their homeland. They are looking for democracy, opportunity and freedom. They want their children to grow up in a society that allows for free thinking.

When you compare income, taxes, retirement - you see what is the main driver. Look at the UK Brain Drain.

I have watched plenty of docos on the second world war ; including interviews with the major heads of states involved : Churchill ; Roosevelt; and Stalin - certainly the Americans as long standing allies of Britain played a highly significant role in the success of winning and ending the war on foreign soils. This has been depicted many times both on documentaries and popular older series. Many share the view that the USA played a critical role in victory.

Just a couple of observations.

Haters are going to hate and it doesn't matter who they are or where they may be from or what even it is about. They will always find something to b*tch about.

When my husband & I were in Germany for a month, we didn't observe anyone from America that was loud or rude that stood out. We did run into other Americans while we were there. While on a tour bus waiting to leave for Neuschwanstein, a group of obnoxious drunks from England tried to board with mugs of beer. The driver made them dump the beer, but they wouldn't shut up the entire trip.
You make a good point. While travelling through Brazil, I came across very unruly drunken German tourists behaving very poorly. The same happened with drunken Swedish tourists while I was visiting Greece.
Perhaps away from their native country some people feel they can behave as they please.

Absolutely, and the Russians more so, but since you said this in direct response to my post, I can't help thinking you have completely missed my point. And I don't want to unnecessarily have to re-explain my post that was clear in the first place.

I wasn't disputing the fact that the US played a critical role in the outcome of WWII, I was challenging the very lazy and dismissive cliché that “You’d all be speaking German if it wasn’t for us!”

I haven't read all of the comments so this may have been discussed, but after reading the summary of the article, apparently China comes in as the most hated country in the world. Very interesting!

Yes, it would seem so. But if you have the time and opportunity to read the whole thread, I would recommend you do so. You might find it highly 'entertaining'? Then boring in places, and head-scratching in others. :)

No, you should have talked to the real guys. Maybe to POWs including those kept in Alabama.

Do people on this forum not know that the Dept. of U.S. Aid was completely shut down by the current administration?!
And that the recent earthquake in Myanmar/Thailand drew help from all over the world; the generous U.S. sent three (3!) workers to assess the situation, and while doing so, they were fired. Put that in your pipe and smoke it.

Pretty embarrassing but typical of this administration .

''
  • Three aid workers received termination notices late this week
  • Former USAID staff say massive cuts hinder Washington's response
  • Rubio rejects criticism of US effort in Myanmar aid
BANGKOK, April 5 (Reuters) - Three U.S. aid workers were laid off while in Myanmar helping the rescue and recovery from the country's massive earthquake, a former senior staffer said, as the Trump administration's dismantling of foreign aid affects its disaster response.
After travelling to the Southeast Asian nation, the three officials were told late this week they would be let go, Marcia Wong, a former official at the U.S. Agency for International Development, told Reuters.''

Are you aware of what is going on in Myramar?

Not at all surprised given current trade wars and Middle Eastern Islamic hatred for the US that's spreading throughout the world, even in the US. I can remember Muslims in Iran and other Islamic nations chanting "death to America" in the 1970's. Now they do it on US soil.
