No, the list of first world countries is much the same as ever - and no I dont think most of them have destroyed themselves at all

Strange claim
I long for the day when we have a world without borders. One world, one humanity, a united planet.

(I know, I've been watching too much Star Trek but still, I would like to see the end to territorial wars.)

Klingons? Cardassians? Romulans? Gorn? Dominion? Borg? Species 8472? The Voth? And on and on.

Enterprise revealed how evil the Vulcan High Command really is. DS-9 showed us the Bell Riots - what really happened to the Gimmies? Voyager revealed that the Federation was so desperate for more brutishly treated dilithium miners that they started to repurpose "obsolete" medical holograms for pickaxe labor.

Yea, the Federation was great for the top 0.001% but not so great for most people. Very little actual difference from the Klingon Empire though, aside from perhaps table manners.

Just so, but there was a united earth. It began when the Enterprise travelled back in time to prevent a Klingon invasion. "First Contact", movie.

No - not getting into argument about who is a refugee because it makes no difference to my point - my point was simply that US isnt the only country to which people wish to flee that is a common denominator of all first world countries

I suppose the choosy ones flee to the U.S., while the less discerning are willing to settle for Australia. After all, some folks would rather watch kangaroos than the Kardashians.

I had a 10 yearlong email friendship with an Aussie. It was a lesson in how others view the US. Jeesh, she believed OZ was the center of the universe, not the US. And it was a shock to learn that the rest of the world does not always think of the US as a Superman, defending the poor and weak.

I'm happy to read this, so thank you. I've heard the idea that everyone in the world wants to go live the US many times (from Americans), and it's totally incorrect. I understand people have a feeling of pride in their nationality, of self-importance, but that doesn't mean it's really true.

Are we? I hope not. No disrespect to the USA but we aren't the same place.

Yes, I think it's so. My brain tells me that the UK is, very roughly, ten years behind the US in most things. What we see there happens here. And in totality, we're more similar than we are different. I've been clear many times - I much prefer the US in general. Neither place is a shanghai-la.

Yes but I had the 'white coat and the key' and the magic words that said "open sezame?" or open says me?

Yes exactly. Some Americans seemed to get very defensive when it was pointed out that other people don't want to live there and prefer the country they are in.

It is great to be patriotic and have national pride - but you also have to understand that is how other
people feel about their own countries.

wots San Francisco like today last time I was there was 1980 thereabouts and we found it rather cool and friendly told not to wonder to far away from the tourist area ?? had a ride on the street cars but the rest of the family where just not interested - we went to dysney land and a boring trip out to the large trees forest with the driver constantly touting for donations to his poor family ?? begging I would call it?

bus trip around inner somewhere to see the Hollywood stars houses [boring] none invited us in!! If they thought they had a tourist slant they we're selling it too well? but despite all the negatives loved the experience - but I do wonder whether they have grown bored of tourists after all you can ; can't you?

I can pick this response of yours' apart piece by piece but I don't want to waste my time or risk damaging someone's ego. Let it suffice to ask if you know where the English language comes from. Here is a hint: Eng-Land.
Inept...your name on your posts is perfect!

Everyone that has studied WWII history knows that England was in trouble as the Germans were beating them to death! The USA came to stop the Germans from destroying England. We did that even though the Japanese hit Pearl Harbor; we understood that England was in trouble. and we knew we could also wipe out the Japanese. One of the primary focuses was to help England and France defeat Germany! We knew we could fight both wars and win! Otherwise, our leaders would not have jumped into both battles' fronts...

The fact that our counties speak the same language has nothing to do with WWII! Although we share many commonalities including language. I don't recall England jumping in to help us in Viet Nam...!

That's enough on this post, as you say the time is not worth it...

Let me tell you that many of us "Red Blooded Americans" prefer you all never want to live in our country! Please feel free to visit, but go back home...
As for Newsweek Magazine, it has been a "rag mag" for many years...! Years ago, our college class used Newsweek to study poor writing technique and bias, we had to write a paper on it! I got an 'A' on that paper, and it was easy with all the BS they have in the magazine...

You are discounting the fact that Britain endured the Blitz (September 7, 1940–May 11, 1941) well before Pearl Harbour (December 7, 1941). The Royal Air Force defeated the German Luftwaffe in the skies over Britain without US help. The Brits were helped by Commonwealth countries and pilots who had escaped from conquered countries in Europe. One of my uncles enlisted in the RAAF and was flying with RAF when his plane crashed in Nigeria, having been struck by lightning.

The British refused to surrender to the Nazis and suffered considerable privation by doing so. America only declared war after the Japanese attack and subsequent loss of the Philippines base. The Australian Prime Minister announced that Australia was at war immediately after Churchill did.

As for Vietnam, I don't recall that US was under any threat at that time. It was a foreign war that had a vacancy when the French withdrew. Once again, Australia joined in with the slogan "All the way with LBJ".

I think you should take a closer look at WW II history, in particular the dates. US did play a significant part in the victory but Britain joined the fight against Hitler from the time he invaded Poland in October 1939.

Tell her she's dreaming. A former Australian PM once described Australia as "the arse-end of the earth".

US defending the poor and weak is a bit of a stretch, IMNSHO.

This is really stupid....it is all about population size! Find any large group of people, that is much larger than another group of people and the smaller group of people will say that hate that other group! Human nature...101!
I'm not saying that I don't believe you yet! but can I see your list of references for that "opinion? please
