North Carolina HOA demands family remove cross from yard, explain connection with Christmas

This isn't HOA, but when I lived in Big Bear, CA, there was a COMMITTEE trying to ban colored Christmas lights downtown. ( businesses could only display white lights) and any pictures or displays of SANTA CLAUSE or reindeer were banned.

BUT

In Alaska, the most beautiful mansion could be right next to a dumpy old rusted fisherman's trailer (with junk all over his yard.)
People's vision didn't go beyond their fence line!

Different folk!

I will never understand the small-mindedness attached to such, Gaer.

Downtown shops in Big Bear are required to adhere to strict zoning rules requiring them to keep with the overall rustic mountain town theme. It's not small mindedness. Big Bear's economy is largely fueled by tourism and skiers so it's understandable that these rules would be strictly enforced.

Within the downtown area there are several year-round Christmas shops with plenty of Santas as well as religious displays within.
I can't honestly recall whether the holiday displays extend to the windows.

I wonder how the HOA would feel about Rudolph, or Santa and his sleigh, or Frosty the Snowman, or Charlie Brown and his gang?

To me, the cross looks more like a memorial to someone who died than a Christmas symbol.
But I'm not religious, so.......what do I know.

That's how it strikes me, too.

HOAs are not my cup of tea which is why I don't live in a neighborhood that has them.
I do believe there's a certain amount of "live by the sword, die by the sword" that goes on in restricted areas. What one person thinks is fine might rankle with a neighbor enough that they call the HOA police on you.

Different strokes for different folks.

I don't understand the cross symbol at Christmas. Christmas the celebration of the birth of Christ, not his death. But banning it is ridiculous.

HOA's can be good in some ways. Read the rules before you move in. If they are reasonable, they make for a more pleasant and safer neighborhood. If they're too controlling or not for you, go elsewhere

I think Gaer stated Santa and reindeer were banned in downtown Big Bear as were colored lights. I think they were going for a uniform decorative look with the lights.

Some people still get upset over portrayal of the Nativity scenes on public property. So others countered with- hey, I don't believe in Santa Claus, so why is his face all over town? It's funny when you think about it.

I don't find any of it funny, I just find it childish.

the family could give Mark 10:45 as a Biblical reference.

don't know much as HOA, but it sounds like they want to keep things homogeneous....

Just mention HOAs, and I'm off on them for hours. If you want to live in an environment where some committee dictates the maximum height of only the "approved" specie of grass can grow, then shut up and take down the cross. You want to "conform", then conform, or move.
