Ok Administrators, what’s going on?

This forum is now riddled with politics and the Humor sections of cartoons and jokes has stuff all the time that verges on the obscene. Personally I don’t care if you want to include politics and dirty jokes because I don’t have to read them if I don’t want to, but why pretend it isn’t already here?

It's pre-election time in the US. We've are in the midst of a pandemic. And unarmed black men keep winding being killed by white cops. I do think this forum has remained politics free, considering the above. As a member of the old days in this forum, we are now a pristine version of the vitriol we used to hurl at each other in the "politics" forum. Glad it's gone. Do we get a little politicy? Just barely.

I thought it was just me that noticed; for as long as I still have the option to skip them, I don't mind.

I agree. I've only seen a couple of posts that might have bordered on politics. If the forum blocks us from talking about what's going on in our world, what's left? Pictures of cute puppies and kittens? No offense to puppies or kittens, but I don't see what's wrong with discussing current events, as long as we don't say vote for Fred or it's all the fault of xxx party.

I thought that this horse was dead.

To me, politics is about discussing partisan politics and not about discussing the actions of our government or current events.

I would still like to see a political forum that could be filtered out or blocked in a way similar to the games forum.

I have to admit that even if we had a political forum with restricted access I'm afraid that it would become a dark and ugly place because so many people can't seem to disagree without being disagreeable or making things personal.

^^ THIS^^

I've noticed in a lot of discussions, there are those who just want to have the last say , some even hurl personal insults that are unnecessary.

I go to this forum for light banter, chi chat with great minds that lift others, not cause division. But, I can't control freedom of expression, I just don't engage.

Well, I'll reinstate my 2 cents. That being, politics/government ...... is the only thing that we ALL must live under. Therefore, IMO they both should indeed be discussed among groups such as this.

I understand the decision was made not to, long before I came along .... So ?

I agree with Butterfly. If we eliminate any discussion of world events, what is left? I don't think any discussion of what is happening in the world automatically qualifies as "political." Although you can put a political spin on anything, I guess.

I do think our administrators have been very accommodating in allowing most discussions, even those that venture off the "puppies and kittens" grid. Maybe they could give us a definition of "political discussions" for the purposes of this forum?

Like Butterfly, I think "Vote for Fred" would be political. Saying that conservative-type people are not as strict about wearing masks as liberal types appears to be, is really not political. It's a discussion of mask wearing, and human behavior in general.

When you read the heated discussions about the current events, it may feel like politics is back, I understand that, sometimes I feel that way too. But these discussions are not about party differences or any politicians. I would remove the posts and lock the thread as soon as a party or politician is brought up. There were too many threads about police and race, I don't like that either, but these topics are not banned. It seems to have let up though.

I hate to say this but, a few members don't care about the no-politics rule and don't hesitate to mention any names, I had to remove their posts again and over again. They are leaving me no choice but to use the the permanent ban. Some people found this forum much more important than they thought after they were banned and had no chance to get back in.

Also, we always require descriptive thread titles, one can make a pretty good guess on what to expect before opening a controversial thread. You may want to skip it if you don't like heated discussions.

When you start a controversial topic such as race or religion, unpleasant replies shouldn't be a surprise, don't expect mods to remove the posts you dislike. When you find the replies offensive, the chances are that others had found your thread offensive in the first place.

I’m definitely one of the ones who took the George Floyd murder too seriously . Normally I refrain from watching the news but since the pandemic it was impossible not to.

Viewing news online isn’t something I’d even considered before and once I read about the murder of this man, I couldn’t seem to let it go. Suddenly there was collective display of loss and anger that wasn’t just about the death of one man but for the centuries of racial discrimination felt in every corner of the world.

This wasn’t just about mourning the death of George Floyd but symbolized the lost justice of humanity which became a pivotal point that I couldn’t seem to let go of. To read members posts who figured he deserved what he got, wasn’t something I could accept but people have a right to feel however they want even if that involves hatred and there’s nothing I can do to change it.

Consistently debating these topics , not only fuels the fire but upsets others including myself so I’m not even sure why I get involved. I’m one of those types who can’t debate topics without taking things personally. Unfortunately I’m not the only one.

I apologize for getting overly involved in the debating zone which may have caused upset to others. My views about the case haven’t changed any but my decision to get involved has. If there is a way to block out Current News & Hot Topics section, I’d like to do that if possible.

Suddenly our world has gone mad.
I wish I could do something positive to help but arguing online definitely isn’t it.

I haven't read any posts that are political. Maybe your definition of politics is different.
As for "obscene jokes," obscenity is in the eye of the beholder. Perhaps you find something obscene that most do not.
Perhaps you take life too seriously.

Agree. I haven't seen political posts. I usually don't read the humor forums but I'd hope inappropriate posts would be deleted.

In college I took a course called “Politics and Culture” which helped me to realize that politics is an inevitable part of the human experience, one that is tied into psychology, economics, sociology, and a number of other disciplines. I even knew people who were “Political Science” majors, not all of whom became radicals, politicians, or lawyers.

The key elements in controlling politics and humor are balance and perspective, which is not always an easy road to find. Outside of this and a few other sites, it’s easy to find places that have lost control and are dominated by vicious attack politics and/or ponderous vulgarity. Visiting them can be like taking a bath in acid.

The role of a forum administrator is not an easy or often appreciated one, and I think that those who operate in that capacity here are doing a great job at maintaining a positive and friendly environment... 🌷

I get tired of people who try and personalize what someone else says to gain attention for themselves. People who attack others opinions. People who use belittling words and other bulling tactics to get their points across and their way. People who just wear me out.

If only my husband had an IGNORE button, life would be great, 😂.

That's funny

As I read thru the first three sentences, I thought, hey, give rgp some slack, those debate tactics bring back memories

Haven't seen those used since grade school

Reminds of yet another poster of mine;
