Parents hold their own children captive in the home.

I thought the same as Warrigal as to how this could go unnoticed. They showed a picture of the house and the houses next door are very close together. Do people turn a blind eye, don't want to get involved or live in their own little world? I feel so bad for those children. This should not be happening, just awful. I think the parents should be chained up and starved so that maybe, just maybe, they will GET it. Disgusting.

Disgusting, children are supposed to trust and depend on their parents, not the first story of abuse and neglect...unfortunately. :(

This, rather struck me: "California state records list David Turpin as the principal of the Sandcastle Day School, with its address at the Turpin house.". There may be far more to this story. The couple actually look deranged.

Please don't take this the wrong way but don't be too sure that it was unnoticed. Quite obviously, everyone here cares, but too many others are not possessed with a sense of moral outrage. As we speak, tens of thousands of American children are, at this very moment being abused/starved/neglected.

The people who inflict that on children are sociopaths. They lack ANY feeling for others. It's much more common than people imagine.

The child that got away and made the call was 17 years old. The police thought she was about 10. And, I understand one of The hostages was in their 20s. I just don’t understand how this could go on so long and not be noticed by someone.

Just a thought, and perhaps a long shot but.....people just do not interact like they once did.

It amazes me that they got away with this for so long, I'm so happy the daughter saved her siblings by escaping and getting help. These people are beyond sick, they're just plain evil IMO. A couple of relatives knew that the children were being isolated from others, maybe they should have reported something a long time ago so that a welfare check could be made on the kids. I saw a video of the parents renewing their vows with an Elvis impersonator.....bizarre. More here.

How they can do that to their own children they should be chained to the bed and starved for their sentence

We had a very similar case right here in Adelaide in 2008 where children were forced to sleep in old wreaked cars in the back yard ,and forced to stand on their tip, toes ,stand holding books over their heads for hours for stealing the “adults” food

It involved 21 ...children to three different women ( I believe the children all had the same father ) all” living “ in a very small housing commission Home

I seen this story on Dr Phill today .. why do people treat children like this ? I don’t understand how they can live be with them selfs

People like that are warped. They do not have a conscience. They feel their own pain but are unable to have any compassion for others. Their needs ALWAYS come before other peoples needs.
The oldest name for them was psychopath. later it was changed to sociopath and later still to anti-social personality.
They are not the kind of people you would want to be stuck on a desert island with if there was a shortage of food.

I thought I've seen or heard almost everything when it comes to abuse, neglect etc but this because of who makes it more disturbing. I know of parents that were investigated for neglect(rightfully so) and basically just ignored and looked at the process as an item on a grocery list. Their child flunked high school.

And yes this home school. They are all over the place here many unlicensed off book which are nothing but glorified baby sitting for many parents. And I know parents who home schooled kids which saved them. But this home was on book. I'm not saying authorities have to rip apart a house every visit but at least look for clues. If something is unfounded don't even mention a suspicion in the report.

You try not to be a nosey neighbor but we should all be aware of who is among us.

Along that line,...About two years ago it was discovered that a sexual predator lived in the neighborhood. There were those that said they wanted him gone, & yet those that said he had a right to privacy, etc & so-on . While it was a discussion, petitions going around, and all. I told a neighbor, I believe ALL felony ex-cons should be known, listed. I'm as much or more interested in say a ex-con thief in the neighborhood as I am a sex crime felon . IMO one gives up the right to privacy once they go criminal.....

We had a similar case years ago here in Pa. A young couple had adopted a baby from the hospital. Their neighbors, friends and relatives were all thrilled for them. The little girl was stated by those that knew the family as doing very well. The family moved from California to here in PA. The relatives had not heard from them for several months. Finally, one of the relatives came to PA to visit the tourist areas and decided to stop and see the family with the little girl.

They were told that she was away at church camp and no further contact between the family members ever took place for nearly five years. Then, another family member again looked into seeing the family, but again was told that she was away with her friends. This time, the visiting family member became suspicious and came into a State Police Barracks just outside of Pittsburgh. They decided to do a welfare check and asked to see the little girl, but was told that she was still away with her friends.

This is raised a red flag to the Trooper, so he asked if he could come into their house and look around. The man refused saying that the house was in a mess and it just wasn’t a good time. After getting a judge to issue a search warrant, two Troopers returned to the house and began a search. The one Trooper found a door locked upstairs. When asked what was in the room, the man told the Trooper that they keep the door locked because it’s where they keep their safe. He asked the man to open it, but he tried to convince the Trooper that there was really nothing inside to see and besides, he would have to go looking for the key because he always misplaces it.

The Trooper told him that he would give him five minutes to find the key and then he was going to open the door by whatever means was necessary. The man pretended to search for the key. In the meantime, the Trooper radioed for an additional Trooper to respond to the address. Finally, the Trooper opened the door by ramming it with his shoulder. Inside was what the Trooper thought was a maybe 3 year old little girl. As it turned out, she was six years old, malnourished and had various physical ailments.

To conclude this already long post, the couple was found guilty of various charges and each received 12-15 year prison sentences. These types of cases are all too frequent. It is our position that right now, we have children being held captive in their home here in the U.S. It just takes someone to be able to read the signs and report it as suspicious activity. A welfare check harms no one, but it may save a life. We have had similar cases, including that of an elder relative.

I agree but their groups and movements out there that want criminal records automatically expunged after a set time and would only be available to law enforcement and court system. Since the process is public it is the public's business. Especially as an adult if one is committing crime they can't claim juvenile delinquent. In some states a lot of employers are not allowed to ask about criminal or credit history. It

Don't state authorities check up on homeschooled kids?

The quick answer is that it depends on the state. Some have very strict rules, require socialization with formalized groups of home-schooled kids, adherence to lesson plans and frequent testing.

Other states and some jurisdictions within states are extremely lax. A teacher friend who lives in another state said she and other teachers believe that many people are home-schooling to cover up abuse and their state doesn't provide enough funding for supervision to prevent that sort of thing from happening.

Why?!! I can't wrap my brain around why people would do this to their own children! I find it especially detestable when mothers go along with the mistreatment of their own children. How much you wanna bet there was some sexual abuse going on? The wife's sister was on GMA and she said she had stayed with them a long time ago and she was uncomfortable with the husband. She said he'd come into the bathroom when she was taking a shower but it was like a joke to him. She also said the oldest stayed in her room and when she did come downstairs, she had to ask permission to sit at the dinner table. This couple's actions are the epitome of sick.
