I was nine years old when George VI died. I remember the school assembly when we were told the news. A period of mourning followed and men wore black armbands and the shops were draped in purple and black cloth.
Australia did not have TV in 1952 and we had to rely on radio for news and commentary. We also had newsreels at the picture theatres. We waited several weeks before we could see colour film of the coronation. Not very long after that Elizabeth II made a royal tour of Australia and we all lined up for hours in the sun to see her drive by. My mum was a huge fan of the royal family until the day she died.
