U.S. gun sales in the first six months of 2021 surged 15% to 22,243,220 from the same six months last year. This makes it the largest first half of the year figure since sales were first recorded in 1998.
The increase is part of a trend. Sales of guns in the United States rose 40% last year to 39,695,315. That represents the high water mark in annual gun sales since the current record-keeping system went into effect. Increases by state in June and for the first six months varied substantially, as has been the case for years.

Surging crime and murder rates, coupled with many police quitting, is making a lot of people think that they may have to defend themselves from the criminals. Ammunition sales are also soaring...when you can find any. Prices for ammunition have gone up between 2 to 5 times what they were a couple of years ago.

Hardly a day goes by without news about a shooting, in most cities....and cities like Chicago have areas that are almost becoming a war zone.

I did too, in 1985 for 2 weeks driving around some western states and a few days in New York and it was great but posters are telling me that there are now so many armed criminals that everyone needs a gun for self defence. I don't believe them.

PS We weren't allowed access to firearms and we were quite OK.

Keesha, I think I need new glasses. The red thing beneath your name…I thought it was an Angel holding large maracas, yikes, it turned out to be a lobster. 😁
Haha Shali! 😂
Even Google had a tough time with that one. Forget the colour red though. I think these might be the ugliest angels I’ve ever seen.🥺😅 It’ll make me laugh all day though. Lol

How many guns per capita to date?
in 2017 it was 1.205, but with the upsurge in sales in the last 3 years, probably closer to 1.4 or even 1.5

What would be interesting is to know how many guns the average gun owner has, since we know a lot of folks have zero.

I just have the one, as does my SO. No need to get more if I can't get ammunition.

Wow, I had no idea. Not sure why, but Americans seem to buy guns when feeling insecure.

I own quite a few guns, I used to hunt so bought guns for that, and have inherited quite a few. My wife's father left us a bunch. I have not purchased a gun in 40 years, and have been giving some away lately. Got a pistol of my fathers I will give to my brother this summer.

I keep all the guns in locking safes and do not have any ammunition in the house. My biggest worry is keeping the grandkids away from them.

Here in our County the Sheriff has sent in over 20,000 criminal checks since Jan. 1st to the FBI to see if WOMEN can get a gun CCP permit. Now, this is more than the whole year of 2020 so our sheriff says. His stats don't say how many men.

In uncertain times some people take solace in buying guns, gold, bottled water, dehydrated food, toilet paper, etc...

I'm not sure that any of it makes much difference but it does seem to be a natural response for many.

That's kind of a whopping generalization, Alligator. It's only true of some Americans, fortunately not all or even most.

We went down to the US last 2005, never again until somehow the US gets some gun controls. However I will likely die before that happens since I am in my 80's.

Fireworks in the middle of the night are certainly annoying but is it really necessary to shoot three of your neighbours, two women and a boy of 9?

Apparently Missouri has just loosened its gun laws ??? Will he still be allowed to own a gun after this?
It depends on the details which are lacking (as they usually are).
The article mentioned that "The argument got physical." "Physical" can mean anything from shoving to punches to assault with a deadly weapon. Legally, a gun is no more deadly than a stick, club, or knife. And if there is a large disparity in age, size or strength between two people, deadly force may also be justified. Who got physical first?
You probably recall the Zimmerman/Travon Martin case. Zimmerman was acquitted because Martin made the verbal confrontation physical by assaulting Zimmerman - which he had no right to do. Also in the picture was the disparity in age, size & strength between the two.
Yes, Zimmerman was foolish for confronting Martin, but Martin was more foolish for putting his hands on Zimmerman.
