San Diego area synagogue shooting. 1 Dead others wounded suspect in custody.

Another twisted teen with an "assault style" rifle and murder in his heart against Jews and Muslims. That is the very definition of antisemitism.
Is simply not having a criminal record sufficient to clear someone who wants access to these kind of weapons?
How does public safety stack up against personal liberty in cases like this? Is it all of one and none of the other ?

19 year old isn't going to have much of any kind of record. Other than a criminal record unless there was court ordered psychological treatment nothing will pop on a check. Background checks are regulated by law. If one passes they can buy a gun.

Someone or organization influenced this kid much earlier in life.

Also a woman member was killed when she jumped in front of a rabbi and took the bullets for him.

My thoughts in red.

I realise that is the law but it seems to me a dangerous law. We have provisional driving licences for new drivers that limit the speed at which they can drive and prohibit any alcohol in their system while behind the wheel for several years. While on their Ps any infringements such as speeding or non zero blood alcohol result in licence suspension or if repeated, cancellation.

How about new gun buyers being restricted in the category of firearm that they can own which would not include the more high powered and deadly weapons for several years. During that time any red flags such as violence, crime, association with hate groups could be registered before a final background check to grant an unrestricted licence.

This is not a complete answer but it might be one way to accommodate the tension between the second amendment and public safety
.

Someone or organization influenced this kid much earlier in life. No argument about that from me. There are a lot more like him out there.

Also a woman member was killed when she jumped in front of a rabbi and took the bullets for him. A noble act. It is a pity that it was needed.

It gets worse. It seems that the shooter, who has been arrested, is a NURSING STUDENT.

How does that vocation fit with attempted mass murder? I am completely gobsmacked by this information.

How does being a nursing student make it any worse?...and for who?

A person killed a person.......it doesn't get any worse than that.

Being a nursing student doesn't "make it worse." But it does make it a bit surprising. Usually people go into the nursing profession because they care about and love other people.

Exactly Sunny. I cannot fathom the mind of a person who wants to murder many strangers at the best of times. It seems so monstrous.
I find it even harder to imagine someone who is responsible for caring for sick and vulnerable people entertaining such thoughts.

Yes, yes, I realise that some nurses have actually been serial killers of patients, so I shouldn't be surprised. But I am, and doubly appalled.

It's very sad indeed for those who lose their lives and their families who mourn their loss, whether a synagogue or African American church, etc. :(

I'm looking at pictures of this kid and it doesn't add up. I guess you can't stereotype or profile a mass shooter.

He looks to "normal" for lack of better word. He is apparently a piano player and his father a school teacher. Pictures show a residential suburb. Doesn't seem angry or disgruntled in pictures. Had a hair-do, not a shaved head, military or mountain man hair style. Like many teens it's seems like he threw himself into a fad or interest which morphed into illegal activity. I don't think this is just online or social media activity. People influenced and had control over him, there's a real person behind this cowardly killer. But that same murderer is an adult an able to make his own decisions.

But the statement was......."It gets worse. It seems that the shooter, who has been arrested, is a NURSING STUDENT.
"

Hence, my question.

Surprising ? IMO, not really....every group has it's "rotten apples"

A lot of killers look "normal", and I'm sure there's pictures of him out there that aren't so favorable. There's a real person behind every killer. It's not appropriate and too offensive to quote some of the things this creep said here on the forum, but more about this white supremacist killer here.

His looks, how he wears his hair, etc. matter not at all. A lot of our stereotyped ideas probably come from the movies and TV; in real life, these monsters run the full gamut of looks. I recently watched a documentary about Ted Bundy, one of the worst serial murderers who ever lived. He was very good-looking, which may partially explain why it took so long to catch him.

And what's a mass shooting without a manifesto to make it seem like it's an 'official' or 'justified' murder spree. These murderers ramble and just seem to throw in as much of 'the' lingo as possible. Too much actually which is how you can tell their musings are just a rationalization for their cowardly acts. At 19 to have fully read or entrenched himself in somethings like the Turner Diaries, 'debt based currency' or media ownership is quite a lot for a 19 year old who was enrolled in nursing school which not exactly a time sparing major.
