Scary - be vigilant

That, my friend is why I do not use Facebook, My Space, Twitter, Classmates or any other social media. As to here, I post only things I am not worried about having revealed.

Same with me Jim. Don't need all that other stuff to fog my brain. Tried facebook once then got out of it quickly.

I know it has it's uses but not for me.

Excellent Video Josiah...I have a FB account but I have absolutely no info on it except a nickname...I only ever use it to follow what the kids are up to.. nor like you Jim do I use twitter or any other social media..although I do have a tiny bit of info on Linkedin but nothing anyone could use to know anything more than what I do for a living..

Actually I found the video quite amusing.................................I use and enjoy Facebook and I only put on there what doesn't matter to me, the same as on here where it is an open forum for the world and his wife to read, I really can't see the difference.

The main reason is Millions of users. More fertile ground to plow for the "collectors".

There may be millions of users on Facebook but do you know how many non members read open forums????

I use Facebook all the time and have no plans to quit. I certainly don't have my address, phone, anything about money, and I have strict privacy settings. I change my password often. I've been on since 2008 and never had an issue.

Same as myself Ameriscot except it was about 2006 when I joined.

I don't think FB is really the problem. I've been active on FB for several years with health related groups and benefited enormously from the support I have received. I don't care if anyone in Kazakhstan knows that I have a sore muscle. I'm just careful to protect the sensitive financial information. My guess would be that a key parameter measuring your vulnerability is how often and how well you change and manage you passwords.

No problem Jim, for a minute I thought you had mixed me up with my budgie who just happens to be called Billy.:D

On that note I must away to my bed.:)

Ah yes April ..however on this forum most of us if not all don't give out our real names, real addresses..etc...with pictures of our actual house...pictures posted of the actual place or event we're attending at the time ( yoohoo MR burglar you can see I'm not at home tonight/ or yoohoo mr mugger you can see exactly which venue I'm at wearing my expensive jewellery ) etc..

It's overwhelming to me. I mean, a bank employee could get to my stuff, or anyone elses. I do try to watch out for things, but I feel as if I "was careful" about every thing that is out there to get into people's pockets, it would be a 24/7 worry. I'm not saying "don't pay attention", I'm just saying, again, it's just overwhelming, like too much for me to think about.

For the vast majority of people, virtually every keystroke they make on the computer is being tracked. The 2 worst and most prolific tracking programs are Comscore Beacon, and Doubleclick. Whether you are just browsing the news, or conducting some online financial transaction, one or more of these tracking programs is noting every move you make. These programs purport to be gathering data for advertisers, but it is just one small step for someone in their organizations to misuse that data. Noraml Anti-Virus and Firewalls Do Not stop these trackers...to be safe, it requires a program specifically designed to identify and block these known trackers.

you are right Don, I've read a lot about how anti-virus is only good for a time, until the viruses are updated, then we have to be sure we are covered. Just like a flu-virus. I don't think anyone can be immune to the different "tracking" programs etc. There are people that are online as much as any of us, and maybe more so, busy figuring out new hacks. If you want to be the safest, it's probably stay offline, lol. Then again, there have always been hackers (people figuring out when you go on vacations so they can burglarize etc.). It's the world we live in. The best way to be prepared is how to live if you lost every cent, and every thing you own.

I enjoyed the video. :)

I like Facebook and I have some of my privacy settings pretty tight and some photos and whatever not. I don't reveal all my personal business on there though. I use my real name on FB.

Hollydolly, I too am on Linkedin. I feel kind of bad about it though. They kept sending me emails to join and I got sick of it because I have NO reason in the world to be on there. They kept pestering me so I joined and said my profession was in the Tobacco Industry. I'd forgotten about it but a few days ago my of my kids who joined asked me about it. He was curious as he knows I've never been a smoker. They leave me alone now though except for email updates which I never open.

The public can't look at your profile unless your settings are set to public. They should be set to Friends only and also kept private from friends of friends.

I post photos to FB while away on holiday which is one of the pleasures of it. The friends I have that know exactly where I live are not going to rob my house. I live in a zero crime area as well.
