Self checkout-love or hate?

I don't like them because as others have mentioned they put clerks out of jobs
or reduce their hours. I usually shop on Sundays as the line ups are not so long
and I have gotten to know several of the checkout clerks and we have a chat
while putting the items through the cash.

This is the most common reason that I see. But you can't stop progress. The stores will do whatever it takes to make more profit. Some stores have taken them out. Didn't suit their customers.

Now I am finding that I prefer shopping at stores that have the self checkouts.

There is an option of course. You don't have to use them. The polls show that 75% of seniors respond negatively to the use of the self checkouts. It's like everything else. You have to use them to get to know how to use them. Once you get the knack of it, then it becomes simple.

No different than getting a new Windows computer.

Really? That's what I don't like if I am in a long lineup behind the chat. L.O.L.
 
Don't like them. If the establishment wants my money, they'll pay a human to take it. Also, the few, maybe 2, times I've used them, an employee came over and did it for me. Don...

I can’t remember the last time I’ve used a check. I mean, I have them and all, but I typically just use a card or Apple Pay.
 
I might consider using self checkout once the store offers me a substantial discount to compensate me for the services I'm NOT receiving and the damage to my community due to employment loss. In other words ... No!

Just a guess, but . . . I predict many of us will soon be ordering all of our grocery store items on line with delivery to our homes or pick-up stations. The exceptions will be some fresh meat, produce, and baked goods which will all come from small specialty stores. The big box supermarkets will fade away and become "Do you remember ..." subjects for future senior forums.

I'm not surprised. It's usually us older people who balk or feel uncomfortable with new tech without a human to perform tasks. I've seen it at work. I resent the (possible) job loss most, but it is a cramp getting used to it too, I'll admit.

Just like our parents used to say: "the old ways are best". It's easier for us to rest on that than to learn new ways. Human nature.

full shopping carts.

The email request is something I've never seen. No way would I give it.
 
I don't like them. Something always goes wrong and I have to call someone over. I also like my items packed in paper bags. When I go through the self checkout I can only use plastic. Items packed in a paper bag fit better and you can get more items in one bag than the plastic.

The request comes up when you select to pay. It also requests how to get your receipt. You can have it printed or emailed. I never give it. The self checkout does give a discount if you have scanned your member card. Thursday's is a great day for seniors.20% discount on non sale items. This is at Shoppers Drug Mart which now sells a lot of grocery items.

The 20% discount at SDM is great. Every time I shop there, I'm shocked at how much my total is. It helps to have the points card too.
 
I dislike them because they rob a person of a job. I also dislike that the stores try to shine me on and tell me it's for my convenience, when in fact it is for the store's convenience. I truly doubt that self-check saves anyone money except the store. I try not to use them, but sometimes I do, especially if lines are long or if I only have a couple of items. I much prefer human interaction, even if it's with a cashier who cannot make proper change. LOL!
 
​I rarely have used them. Though our local supermarket pretty much exclusively has the self checkouts open after about 10 or 11 PM. It is a 24 hour store. But there is always someone there to help if needed.
 
I use them a lot when I have a few items.

One of our supermarkets, "Sainsburys", analysed their self checkouts
and discovered that they were selling more carrots through them that
the they bought in the whole of the UK!

The have installed cameras on the self service tills that can recognise
everything that is scanned to stop fraud.

I also use the "Scan As You Shop", where you have to scan your shopping
and bag it in the trolley, when you get to the check out, you just scan a
barcode on a self service till and you are done, sometimes they check five
items, though very rarely, usually if you have put something back and taken
it off the handset.

We hate them. They take jobs away from people just like the cleaning robot RR posted a photo of. I've used self check out once when I ran into Wal-mart and grabbed a bottle of cough syrup and tried to pay and get out of there before I had to open the bottle and start drinking it in the store!
