Sheriff, hurry up please.’ Disabled Florida man battles intruder as cops wait down the street.

And, nobody in the Great White North owns a gun in their home?

Just what would you protect yourself with if a Home Invasion/Robbery was done to you?

We have "trigger locked" S&W 9mm handgun, locked in a gun case, along with two full clips of 9mm ammo. Yes, would have to unlock the case, unlock the trigger, insert the clip and load...........but, when it would be needed, surprising just how fast those four things can be done!
I don't understand your sensitivity, ClassicRockr.

I stated that I am all for anyone and everyone protecting themselves in a life or death situation.

What more can I offer?

As an outsider looking in, I honestly don't understand why the USofA needs police in any State, I really don't.

Everyone in the USofA has guns and carries them, and with laws such as the SYG Law in Florida, who needs police?

In my view it stands to reason that citizens in the USofA should be the law.
Yes, you are an outsider looking in and are obviously doing so with incomplete and incorrect information.

Everyone in the US does not own a gun. According to research, about 1/3 of American adults own guns (many own several) and less than half live in a household where there are guns.

Roughly half of our states do not allow "open carry" of weapons. Stand your ground and castle doctrine laws vary from state to state.

But, if you don't think shooting an intruder is necessary, than what would you do?? You talk like law enforcement is needed in America. America isn't the "OK corral". You do know that kids in ranching/farming communities, can start out with a BB Gun and, as they age, they go to firearms? There are actually teenager shooting competitions. I had a Daisy BB Gun on our farm, and after joining the Navy, went to much bigger guns. Got my firearms training from there (Navy).

Open carry or concealed, what's the difference?

I see no difference.

You missed my point, Classic, in a life or death situation, if lethal force is required, absolutely, do what you have to do.

I wasn't dissing that point.

In some parts of this country, it's a rite of passage for a young boy who grew up with cap pistols and BB guns to trade for the real thing. Dads and Gramps insist and take pride in it.
Your right, when dad and grandpa like to hunt game during hunting season.

Having a BB gun and being taught early on responsible gun use is ok. Progressing to a real gun when age and responsibility has been met is ok.

Being taught defense of home and self is ok.

Handing a child a BB gun without a care is irresponsible. Unfortunately it happens with irresponsible parents.

In Texas you can carry any firearm you choose in your car.
no lic required.
Probably good for road rage.😁
I carry a pistol in my car as I cannot protect myself; however, when you need a firearm you need it quick.
"Hold on Mr. Crook, let me go to my car."

I do not care to see people running around with guns on their hip, (who knows how many people have concealed firearms
on them?)
Crooks carry concealed weapon=you tell me?

Is it any wonder that so many people arm themselves and deal with incidents like this by shooting the intruder, instead of relying on the police?

The reason the cops didn't go directly to the victim's door is because he told the 911 dispatcher that he had a gun. With that info the cops assume the victim is in a panic and might accidentally shoot one of them so they stay back. What happens a lot of times in this kind of situation is the dispatcher will urge the victim to put the gun down some distance away, then the cops will move forward. Most victims don't do that - I wouldn't - but they have to realize at that point that they're probably on their own and might have to shoot a person. It's really hard to prepare for that mentally.

I've heard the call by this victim. He said a number of times he did not want to shoot that guy but he would if he absolutely had to.

I'm in your camp, Jerry.

Even in Australia the old and disabled man inside his home would have been legally justified in shooting a much younger man armed with a brick that he was using to violently enter his home. That the police would hang back is what astounds me.

A little off topic but has anyone ever listened to some 911 calls on YouTube where the operators are completely inappropriate to the distressed callers. No matter what the caller says, it's their job to stay calm in their position. And this is from someone who has been yelled at and cursed at on the job. How do some of these people get these jobs.

Key words: "While law enforcement officers take an oath to serve and protect, they are not bound to do so legally, the U.S. Supreme Court has ruled. The law doesn’t require law enforcement officers to protect you from other people.”

That's concerning a Constitutional basis, no "Duty to protect".

In Ohio that would be "Dereliction of duty" a criminal offense. Also a law even permits an officer to order anyone to assist him/her, if it is within reasonable safety for them to do so.

This story is months old. I have to wonder: were there any repercussions? Was the police chief (or whoever was responsible for those cops doing nothing) held accountable? If it happened as described, I think they should have been fired immediately.

Good question.

The cops don't need you and they expect the same.
