We haven't bought peanut butter nor apple sauce in years. Both are really easy to make, which I do.
For unsweetened apple sauce I just cut and core the apples (I can get organic Gala), leaving on the peel. Cut into chunks, cover and microwave. I let them cool down and throw them into a food processor. I would assume it could be easily adapted if you want it sweetened. Leaving the peel on gives it better flavor.
We use unsalted peanut butter and usually buy dry roasted when they're on sale. 2-3 Minutes in a food processor for smooth. Never had it separate, but have always kept it in the fridge. During the holiday season when more baking items are on the shelves I will get raw peanuts and roast them myself. Also do almond butter, roasting them first. Takes about 7 minutes for smooth.
@chic, Bought a pineapple today--#7 size, 2.99. The other store I have access to has the larger ones for $6. Both stores have had a steady supply as far as I've seen. Guess there has to be one advantage to living where I do.
