52 years ago, February 15th 1971 to be exact, the UK currency changed to a decimal system. Previously there were two hundred and forty pennies in the pound, now there are just one hundred.
Our previous currency had colourful names for the coins, like tanner, for the six penny piece and shilling for the twelve penny coin. The fact that I can remember all that is not what makes me "old."
Today I changed energy suppliers, the young lady that I spoke to explained how their payment systems work. I joked about how, as a boy, I remember putting a shilling in the meter. The lady had never heard of a shilling, I then shared a similar ignorance. Although I have heard of the term PayPal, I have not the first idea what it is or does or how it works. We ended our conversation with her saying that she would Google shilling and I said that I would do likewise with PayPal.
