Supermarket

I don't enjoy shopping in general. No matter what you shop for or where you shop, you're going to run into asshats and misbehaving children. Grocery store shopping has become more stressful because of COVID and unending price increases. I haven't used grocery pick up service because I prefer to choose my own items. However, I'll consider it in the future should I need that service.

I try to hold down my grocery shopping to every two to three weeks to lighten the aggravation. Occasionally I might have to pop in once or twice for something in between but try to avoid it if possible. I shop for meat at local independent farms and buy in bulk every two to three months. My freezers are stocked, so I don't have to shop for it bi-weekly.

I've always enjoyed grocery shopping. Unlike most stores (and most other places), they have stuff I need and can afford. And they usually have what I want -- unlike, say, a clothing store.

I like taking my time, reading the ingredients, calculating the costs, and comparing the items, with no salespeople hassling me.

It's an opportunity for people watching.

I haven't encountered bratty kids, and I don't mind people chatting in the aisles. Usually they are polite and will move out of the way.

Once I was in a mobility cart and said "Excuse me" to a woman, who sneered, "You can go around." (No, I couldn't.) But such rudeness is rare.

That's a shame. My wife and I who are closing in on 90, call our orders in, select a pick-up time (usually the following day), drive to the store, pop the trunk and they trolley out the groceries and deposit them in the trunk. Payment is pre-arranged and no money or credit card is necessary. No need to even get out of the car.

We've been doing this for the past couple of years and have not been troubled with "short dated items". It's a blessing considering our limited ability to walk about.
yes we can do that here, it's been a thing for many years, but they're bad at putting in short dates, and making terrible substitutions.. for example.. no Mayonaise.. ok, lets put a bottle of washing up liquid instead...no apples, ok a bag of onions... ...I'm not kidding. Some people have little problems but those I've cited occur too often to make a click and collect service any good...

had to go shopping this morning, top up beer and food,,,,,,,
i hate supermarkets,,today, old farts stopping and having a chunter, blocking the shelves off, kids screaming and hurtling around with the trollys,,stackers blocking the aisles, idiots in the car park cant park grrrr,

Well. I've limited my purchases to "Only what I need" but I can go at 10 pm, 2 am or anytime. Thank God WinCo went back to 24/7

our supermarkets close at midnight post Covid.. they used to be 24 hours.. but even if we go at 10pm.. the shelves haven't been refilled from the day.. so there's a shortage of stock.. so we're stuck whatever we do... In the USA you're so lucky to have such huge supermarkets, and such a variety of them...

I've forgotten grocery items on the bottom rung of my cart while going through the cash. The cashier didn't notice, but I came back to the Supermarket when I got to my car and realized the mistake.

But it got my thinking...

A Grocery Store would be the perfect place to off somebody. You just place the body on the bottom rung of your cart...then whistle a merry tune while going through the cash.

And even if another shopper did notice, I doubt they would yell out, "Hey! You forgot to ring in the dead guy!!"
I'm worried for you, Beezer.

DaveA. We have been doing this at our BJs wholesale club. Once or twice a month. All purchases through the Capital One card. No muss, no fuss. We are thinking of getting our weekly groceries this way too. My wife has a bad ankle and I’m not to steady anymore.

I think that is a wonderful option. Not for me at this point but I don't knock it.

I know exactly what you mean. I've been shopping with my daughter and once in a while she'll say "was I ever like that?!" when a kid is screaming or throwing a hissy. I always tell her no, she wasn't... and I'm pretty sure I'd remember if other kids were. She was born in '84. Things have changed on so many levels since the 80s and 90s.
The first time one of our kids did that we turned around, walked out, got in the car and drove home explaining that if they do that they cannot go to the store. Period. Took one time but was planned in advance.

I shop at 7AM Sunday mornings, that's right when the store opens. The shelves are well stocked and the store is nearly empty of people, I'm in and out in 15 minutes.
I used to love grocery shopping on Sunday morn. I still do except now I find I'm dodging carts being filled for online pick up sales. Between those and the bread people and the service dogs, it's getting harder to get around.

I don't mind grocery shopping. Best time to go is weekday mornings. But the sticker shock at check out is getting worse. Even at WINCO which used to have good prices. Still better than many stores, but going up.
Yes! @Remy, My local grocery's sticker prices are now at least 40% higher on almost everything
than the other towns around here. Much cheaper to travel 40-50 miles to make purchases now.

Hahaha --Good one Holly. BTW, how is that washing up liquid when used as a spread in a ham sandwich.😄

If we did encounter that frequently, it might take some of the shine off of "pick-up orders but so faar so good.

We do have those super big supermarkets. WINCO Foods is the only one that went back to open 24 hours. Safeway grocery used to be but now I think they close 2-5am.

I'd use the car delivery or actual home delivery shopping only if I'd have to. I would be very afraid of the substitutions.

I am 'iffy' on the grocery shopping. After doing it myself for years, my husband started doing it when he retired (7 years before me). Now, we do it together which makes it easier on him (he has a bad back & knees). He has his sworn way of doing it & I am just a helper now. But, it makes it so much easier for both of us. We have never tried grocery pick-up, but I'm glad that it's there in case we need it in the future. I do order different non-perishable foods & non-food products online from Sam's, Amazon, etc.

I never liked grocery shopping but I didn’t hate it. We have been using instacart since the beginning of the pandemic and having our groceries delivered. It’s a big expense but since we don’t go anywhere anymore and hardly use any gasoline, we can afford it. I may continue it indefinitely.

after shopping and have only a few items in my cart I went to the '15 items or less' line.. the clerk was tallying up the customer in front of me so I put the divider on the belt and unloaded my cart. A man came running up and said ' wait I was here first, I just stepped out to get something I forgot' and he took down the divider sign and put the stuff back in my cart.....this ever happen to you??
