Superstitions

I don't put up my New Year's calendars (and I have four wall calendars and one desk calendar) until after the new year, mainly because I feel it's taking for granted that I'll still be here then and maybe pushing fate.

Totally stupid, I know. What kind of superstitions do you have, if any?

I do not get that specific, though I do go with a couple of the traditional ones. I always make some black-eye peas, as they are supposed to bring luck. I also do not take out the trash on the first, as it means you may lose something and never find it.

I just realized my bank didn't send me a calendar this year. But I have my phone and laptop so I'll be fine.

My mother had some superstitions (a hat on the bed, a shoe on a table) but I don't have any.

Just pork and sauerkraut on New Year's Day, for good luck all year. That's all. More so because I can't think of anything else to eat anyway. It doesn't always work, btw.

Believe me you wouldn't want to hear how many superstitions I have Aside from some already mentioned, shoes on bed,Pork and sauerkraut on New Years Day. I can't get in bed to sleep if the numbers on the clock are the same as a family members Birthday or Death.Checking the range, doors locked and make sure everything neat before I go to bed.Wearing something red if I am going to be in the company of someone I believe to be hateful. I could go on and on.

Oh pickled herring on New Year's eve or day was for good luck, I forgot.

My mother made delicious pork spare ribs with sauerkraut in the oven, but I can't remember if it was at New Year, she made it more than just once a year.

(Kidding:) Trash must not be taken out on the 1st? You lose some of it and can't find it? It's TRASH, you don't need what's lost anyway. Black-eyed peas are a healthy food--yup, good (luck).

Sassycakes, sounds like you have obsessive compulsive disorder not what could be determined as superstition. It must be exhausting.

If I do something that is considered a superstitious act, it concerns me for a while, but I'm too lazy to stay concerned and so I forget about it, let it go. :)

I ignore all common superstitions as nonsense but I have one of my own that I find I cannot ignore.

Years ago the NSW government initiated a state lottery to raise funds to build the Sydney Opera House. The first prize was huge for the times at $100,000 and everyone wanted to have a chance to win. The first draw went to a family with a blaze of publicity. The result was that their little boy was kidnapped for ransom and he died while in the boot of the kidnapper's car.

At the time, I had young children and although we were pretty strapped for money I decided then and there that I was content with my luck and never wanted to put myself in the situation of having won a major cash prize. To this day I don't buy lottery or similar tickets. I am afraid of tempting fate by winning.

13 New Years Superstitions!

  1. Eating black-eyed peas and greens, I remember this one the most from other years and I remember eating them. Eating them brings good luck and financial prosperity. You are to eat the peas with greens for prosperity. The peas represent good luck and the greens represent money.
  2. Nothing goes out of the house, or you will be losing things during the upcoming year. Don’t take out the trash or food or anything, if your trash needs emptying, do it before midnight or on January 2nd. If you have food or anything to take somewhere on New Years day, have it outside or at their house already.
  3. Kissing at midnight. Kiss someone dear to you at midnight, this will ensure affection for the next 12 months. If you happen to be alone at midnight, kissing the dog or cat would certainly work.
  4. Don’t cry, don’t cry on New Years day, this could bring unhappiness for the next year. So don’t cry even if your favorite team loses in a bowl game. Be upbeat and happy as well.
  5. Don’t wash clothes. The dirty clothes can wait until January 2nd. Some super-cautious won’t even wash the dishes on New Years day, I need to go and find the paper plates now.
  6. No bare cupboards, fill up the cupboards before New Years day, otherwise that could be the way of the New Year.
  7. Money, don’t lend money or precious items and don’t pay back loans either. To do so means you will be paying out money all year long. Also fill all of your wallets with money since that ensures prosperity for the New Year.
  8. Open the doors at midnight as this will let out all the bad from the previous year. Now that’s an easy one to do unless its 30 below out, this will let out the bad before the good can come in on New Years day.
  9. Loud noises, make some noise. This will scare away the evil spirits from entering your life in the next year. I like this one, it makes sense and it’s fun but you need to be careful though since too much loud noise and the cops might show up, and that might not be good for the New Year. Maybe just one yell and two firecrackers.
  10. Don’t break anything, you should try very hard to not break anything, especially a mirror, as that could be doubly bad as breaking a mirror on any other day, so try not to break anything. And this is another good reason not to do the dishes on New Years Day.
  11. Work, try and do something work related on New Years Day, just a token or small amount of work, if you do too much work related stuff, then it might not be so good. This one is only for those who have the day off, I wouldn’t think fireman and others would care for this superstition.
  12. First person entering your home, this superstition is about how the first person who enters your home in the New Year will influence the year you’re about to have. Ideally this person should be tall, dark and good looking. This is a real superstition but I think it came out of an old Cosmo magazine article.
  13. Which way the wind blows, there isn’t a lot we can do about the weather, but superstition holds that if the wind is out of the South there will be prosperous times ahead. The wind out of the East means famine and calamities and out of the North means a bad year for weather. A little odd but out of the West means plenty of milk and fish. Calm winds means a prosperous and joyful year for all, that’s just great since I just read there is a high wind warning for my area.

Some of what are called superstitions come from life experiences--so they're not really superstitions.

These came down through the family and I follow them. Never place new shoes on the kitchen table,I have know idea why you would do that in the first place. I guess smelly old ones are ok. Don't open an umbrella in the house. If you spill salt throw a pinch over your right shoulder for good luck. Don't walk under a ladder. If you happen to put your underwear on inside out, wearing it that way brings good luck. I'm sure there were many more.

Marie, that one about the loud noises scaring away evil spirits is probably the reason for all the fireworks, horn blowing, etc.

I used to tease my mom about superstitions. She was an unsafe driver - always speeding & not paying attention. And she had the wrecked cars to prove it.
When I was 10, we were returning from a piano lesson. A cop pulled her over & wrote her a speeding ticket. She blamed it on my piano teacher's Black Cat. She got really mad at me when I laughed at her & said, "How did the cat force you to speed?"

Those darned black cats!

I blame starting smoking on one black car in particular, the one that graces the cigarette package of the brand that I smoke to this day.

I'll never forget the day I accidentally broke a dressing mirror in my bedroom.

The old "bad luck for 7 years", played havoc on my psyche for a long time.

Superstitions, Keesha, superstitions. :)

Was never given a reason as why, just was a big no-no in our house.
Right. Right. No reason.
That sounds familiar. 😎
My husband is very superstitious and so is his family. Most of these superstitions are bat crazy 🤪 but to be respectful one can’t just burst out laughing.... 😳😬 but of course I do. 🤣
