The Best Singing Voices in Your Generation

No particular order: Etta James, Roy Orbison, Freddie Mercury. Some singers like Aretha Franklin have great voices but (IMHO) they overplay their singing, adding too many embellishments. I feel that way about Barbra Streisand. I think Lady Gaga is very accomplished technically but most of her material is not for me.

Stevie Wonder, Raul Malo, the Eagles (the whole band!), Sandy Denny, early Rod Stewart, Joe Cocker, Otis Redding, the Temptations (the whole group), Marvin Gaye, Levi Stubbs of the Four Tops. I always loved Petula Clark and the woman who sang for the Seekers, can't remember her name. In addition to his other gifts, Paul McCartney is a great singer. Van Morrison! I know I'm leaving some of the greats out.

And, of course, Julie Andrews, Frank Sinatra, Rosemary Clooney in earlier generations.

Raul Malo ......... one of the best ever male voices.

All things considered ... maybe the best.

Always a contrarian in this forum. Well, "screech queen" Lisa Fischer won a Grammy for that song and I don't even need to defend Anne Wilson. She is globally known as one of the greatest voices in Rock. To each his own.

Here you go. Mick Jagger thinks Lisa Fischer is great. Maybe you have Tinnitus. That makes the "screech" worse.

Contrarian you say .......... OK, so I am not permitted to have an opposing opion ?

I still say she screeches , and i don't care what Mick Jagger thinks, I think he is little more than a joke. As is most Rock.

I left out Joni Mitchell, Christine McVie, Chrissie Hinds of the Pretenders, and I really like Michael Stipe of R.E.M. although I'm sure he's not considered technically polished as a singer.
We saw Chrissie Hinds as the opening act for Stevie Nicks. She sounds better now than she did in the 80's. We were amazed!

We have a "no politics" rule at SF. Another rule ought to be "Don't yuck on another's yums." That was a rule at my son's summer camp. Appreciation of an artist is highly subjective and there's no reason to put down someone else's taste. I'll check out Lisa Fischer when I get the chance.
Should there also be another rule that if you have nothing to add to the thread you should not reply? ;) Re: checking out Lisa Fischer, I'll save you the trouble...

Thanks for your response!

John Fogerty was a great singer during the life of CCR. He can't sing like that any more, but he sure could belt out a tune back in the day. I guess he would have been considered a "soul" singer even though he's white. He was also one of the greatest songwriters ever.

John Fogerty & CCR ........ One of the very few Rock singers & Rock bands I liked ...... Liked them a bunch !!

Another vocalists that some may not of heard of from the late 60's and 70's is Sandy Denny. Her voice was amazing. She was involved with the Celtic/Folk Rock band Fairport Convention for a short time as well as the Strawbs and Fotheringay.
Isnt she famous for her version of the Star Spangled Banner? Haven't heard it in years but remember it being outstanding
