The grammar police- proper grammar

Jan 1, 2020
I typed this is response to Mike post 28 on page 2, I've let it set here

Icelandic is the most difficult Indo-European language to learn, due to their 500-800 years isolation.
Eric the Red and his bunch flunked real estate school.

Usin's solved the problem, it's spelt whome's, as in "Whome's car is this.

A 'dry sense of humor' is a constructed sense primarily enjoyed by the person so smitten. Others do not understand
that such a person is actually attempting humor.
so if others do not understand such a sense of humor, then he perceived as a serious lack of humor-right?-right

Gardenlover is absolutely correct about that insipid "his/her" nonsense.

About grammar. It exists so that we can precisely communicate to each other. But, if there is no need for precision; there is no need for strict adherence to the rules of grammar to get your point across. Of course, there are times when adherence is necessary to understand exactly what is meant. I think if you are ordering a pizza, it may be OK to have a dangling participle with cheese.

I'm hard of hearing. Would you mind repeating that?

About the TV remotes, the answer is obviously "are." When in doubt, just turn the question into a statement. Which would you say:
"There is four remotes by the TV," or
"There are four remotes by the TV."

Sometimes it gets really confusing. Example: You are talking to somebody who may be going somewhere, or perhaps her boyfriend is. Which is correct:
1. I was wondering if you or he is going?
2. I was wondering if he or you is going?
3. I was wondering if you or he are going?
4. I was wondering if he or you are going?

Maybe you have to just use the last pronoun to make the decision. So, #1 and #4 are correct, or at least they certainly sound better than the other two.

The word "you," whether it refers to a single person or more than one, is always treated as a plural. "You is" makes no sense and sounds ridiculous. But then, what about "one of you?" : I was wondering if either one of you is/are going?
All four sound horrible to me. You or he? Simply say "I was wondering which one of you are going?"

Grammar is more important in the written word.
We can usually get our point across regardless of poor grammar when speaking to each other. And with usage the words become gender neutral.
At one time guys meant males. Now guys can mean both.
Its fascinating. How art thou?

Maybe off topic a bit but have you ever typed out a sentence and omitted a word and a very important word that changes the whole meaning of what you are saying to the recipient?

I do this at times and then review my text and see the error too late.😲 Then have to correct things and apologise to the recipient. 😳

One example of mine is: Instead of typing "does" I accidentally type "dies" as on my small phone keyboard the i and o are so close.
So embarrasing.

Yes and now with auto complete in typing a response, you sometimes get a weird word in there instead of the one you want.

I cant stand predictive text and cant see the point f it as it takes away my control on what I choose to input...grrr!
