Good point DW, that would be more in character for him. Among the people who council self deliverance morphine is not considered a good choice.

That was quite the different age and different thinking. Medical facilities were poor at best, and in some of the South American countries that Theodore Roosevelt travelled medical facilities were non-existent.
I fully understand and appreciate his desire not to become a burden on anyone.
