Per Iran's constitution, a temporary Leadership Council will assume [or has now assumed] leadership duties and will govern Iran until the 88-member Assembly of Experts selects a new leader.
These are the members of the Council:
Masoud Pezeshkian - Critics have called his administration "moderate" [but] "incompetent" during crises.
Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei - Chief Justice of Iran, known as a ruthless enforcer of the Islamic Republic's laws, playing a central role in the suppression of political dissent, protests, and the enforcement of strict social policies. Appointed by Supreme Leader Ayatollah AliKhamenei.
Alireza Arafi - hardline Iranian cleric, appointed to the Interim Leadership Council following the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei; staunch loyalist to Ali Khamenei's ideology.
