What are the most frightening horror films you ever watched?

The movie ā€˜MOTHER!’

A young woman spends her days renovating the Victorian mansion that she lives in with her husband in the countryside. When a stranger knocks on the door one night, he becomes an unexpected guest in their home. Later, his wife and two children also arrive to make themselves welcome. Terror soon strikes when the beleaguered wife tries to figure out why her husband is so seemingly friendly and accommodating to everyone but her.

That's even scarier than the movie ;)
Rupert Sheldrake's morphic resonance posits that "memory is inherent in nature"[2][15] and that "natural systems ... inherit a collective memory from all previous things of their kind."[15] Sheldrake proposes that it is also responsible for "telepathy-type interconnections between organisms.

My wife and I know Rupert Sheldrake's hypothesis of the morphogenetic field, thus it's no surprise for us.

I read that some moviegoers had a nervous breakdown while watching The Exorcist.
We saw it at the midnight movie when it came out. Came home, went to bed and just then there was an extremely strange noise from the attic (turned out to be the wind) that had us freaked out for the rest of the night. It was a lot like the noise in the movie from the attic.

I can tell you, I was freaked out for days.

Another one that had me going for weeks was "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark" with Kim Darby. Evil critters (who were actually never seen) would enter the house through the small iron door at the base of the chimney in the basement (used to clean out ashes). Eventually, they dragged her down the stairs and through the little door to live with them wherever the hell they lived.

We happened to have the identical door at the base of the chimney in our basement. Unfortunately, I had to go down there at least a few times a week to do laundry. I did not like going down there and couldn't look at that door without shuddering.

So you had an identical door? Yikes! BTW One film that I watched once but never again, because it is based on the supernatural, is Burnt Offerings. The ending is especially terrifying. I never watched the Exorcist and never will.

BTW To avoid the nervous tension you describe, I keep mostly to sci fi with its aliens.

I remember having watched that film with its unexpected twist at the end! Amazing what ideas these writers come up with!

I saw "The Exorcist" at the premier in Georgetown. It was freezing that night, and we were waiting in a long line to get in. We'd gotten our tickets ahead of time, and I tucked mine into my glove. At one point, I took off my glove, forgetting the ticket was in there. As we got to the front of the line, my boyfriend said to get my ticket. I took off my glove again, expecting to find it, but it wasn't there! We looked all over for the lost ticket while everyone else filed into the theater. We were about to give up, and there was the ticket, stuck in a bush.

By the time we got into the theater, the only seats we could find unoccupied were in the front row. So, there we were watching "The Exorcist" with craned necks. It was literally larger than life. I was holding onto my boyfriend's arm so tightly that he was losing circulation. I almost pulled it out of the socket, lol!

Y'all can keep your creepy ass movies. 🤪

According to the actress, she was really being pecked by those birds because Hitchcock was angry with her refusal to respond to his amorous advances and used real birds in that scene in order to punish her.
Did you know that she was Tippi Hedren ?( Love that name ).. the mother of Melanie Griffith and grandmother of Dakota Johnson ?

My little sister, about 5, saw a movie with Abbott and Costello, that had hands coming out of the wall and it scared her so bad, she was afraid that would happen in her bedroom. My brother and I would laugh at her but she would never watch that movie again.

We used to watch the Friday night scary movies as children and it would scare us.

There’s a memorable scene in the original movie Creepshow where a boy gazes adoringly at a decaying ghoul outside of his window. He loves what he sees!

Horrific creatures and monsters are our friends, you see…it’s people that are scary! šŸ™€

At least that was a film and you knew not to take it too seriously. However, I was constantly told real life stories of such horrifying things and was constantly terrified as a child. Even now, at this advanced age, I hesitate and say a prayer before opening an apartment closet because of what my mother told me she saw in one.

Strange as it might seem, my son was terrified of clown photos placed on the wall. Why? Beats me!

I was around 10 yrs. old, and went to the movie theatre with my girlfriend to see a Vincent Price film .. can't remember the title, but, it frightened us so much, we had to leave partway through.

Was it House on the Haunted Hill?

If a person cannot sit, and watch a movie .. [a movie] ......... without having a breakdown, that person has some real issues, and needs professional help ....... although IMO they don't really help anyway !
In my opinion, if a person CAN watch seriously violent movies without being affected, they’ve seriously got something wrong with them. In the movie ā€˜mother’ a newborn baby was torn up to shreds. Those who can watch that with no adverse reaction might need some mental help.
