What did the response to the pandemic do that surprised you? If anything?

The shutting down of science, scientists and doctors, who were saving lives with existing therapeutics so that they could pretend that there were no treatments available. The shutting down of the known science of antibodies. Pretending that they found patient zero, and could contact trace in the USA, well after the virus had been spreading like wildfire for two months.
Accusing, ridiculing, condemning, ostracizing, threatening, censoring, and treating them like the criminally insane because they dared to speak the truth instead of buckling under and towing the party line.

I was surprised by the eagerness of government leaders to interfere with civil liberties. While some seemed to realize that they didn't have the power to put in place mandates, to force churches and businesses to close, others grabbed new powers very quickly. It was astonishing how quickly people lost their rights, even to the point of pressure being applied by threat of loss of jobs to accept an unproven vaccine into their bodies against their will.

The freedoms Americans have always taken for granted were gone in a wink through rulings made unilaterally by governors, mayors or the county health director. That is what frightened me a lot more than the virus did.
Totalitarianism is rearing its ugly head at our expense, all in the name of control and profits, leading to the realization that we are not seen as people but are nothing more than commodities. COVID-19 was just round 1. Better buckle up for the next round.

Sad to add: the the friend hospitalized last week just died of Covid despite everything the ICU did to save him. My age, so a senior, but healthy, fit, good weight, and no underlying condition.

I'd been lulled into a false sense of security, thinking this was all but over. It's not.

I agree with you but there is now a LOT of pushback globally and this is something we need. We've been treated as inconsequential. We need to let those making the rules know we aren't going to be cajoled a second time.

when i first heard something about a cruise ship quarantined at Yokohama in February 2020, i thought, oh that is happening there. that won't affect me. my parents' assisted living facility went on lockdown in March 2020, i thought it was overkill. I was notified first week of April 2020 that a caregiver had Covid. My parents died a week later; within two days of each other, of Covid.
I'm so sorry for the loss of your parents, Anne. That must have been devastating. I lost some friends, and many of my friends lost family members to Covid.

Who determined that wearing a mask will protect you from COVID????
COVID is a VIRUS...one of the smallest organisms and can easily pass through gaps in paper or fabric.
I seldom saw anyone wearing one properly, anyway. At best, they had their mouth covered, but their honkers were out there. Germs can be spread by nasal respiration. Some even wore them as "chin hammocks". A lot of good that did!

During earliest days of spring 2020 how ridiculously unprepared the USA was on a list of pandemic issues especially with stocks of medical supplies. That was most evident in the lack of masks for even health workers on the front lines. Much blame to Wall Street bean counters that had been counting on their "global" corporate marketplace with minimal warehoused to obtain products if they became needed. The often ignorant, misguided responses of ordinary people including many that post on this board and general news media diarrhea didn't surprise this person at all. Neither did the limits to freedoms that citizens needed a wake up about to understand how fragile it all is.

i was surprised that someone determined we needed to stay five feet away from each other; and that amount of measured space would protect us. they actually marked floors in stores and people respected it.
Those foot prints on the floor were pretty silly. I don't think sheep would follow them but a lot of people that I saw sure followed those yellow steps. LOL

The foot prints on the floor were simply a reminder. Initially it was very easy to forget about social distancing and staff would have been driven crazy while trying to persuade people to maintain their distance to avoid breathing and coughing on each other.

Covid has had a lasting effect on our little church. It is a mostly elderly congregation and when Covid was rife in Sydney and vaccine was slow in coming, we went into action. Every surface was regularly disinfected before and after each service, masks and hand wash were available at the front door, people signed in so that if anyone became sick all contacts could be notified. The chairs in the church that were usually close together were disconnected and separated.

At that time we did not sing the hymns out loud and at the sign of peace we either did elbow bumps or just placed a hand on the heart while saying "Peace be with you".

Sounds a bit over the top but we did not lose a single member to Covid.

The chairs are still separated, we no longer wear masks, the hymns are again sung and everyone is quite relaxed about contact, but funnily the elbow bumps are still taking place. People seem to like elbow bumps.

I agree, Friday I was talking to a young man in person, today when I called to speak to him I found out he was off because he has covid. It is not over.

I was at my dentist's office yesterday and we talked about the post-Covid shift in freely spreading one's germs around. He said he won't treat patients who are coughing or seem even slightly ill unless it's a true emergency, in which case he treats them in the farthest treatment room, keep the door closed, he and his assistant put on N95s, and they sanitize everything from top to bottom when the patient leaves.

Even when patients claim it's allergies he tells them he can't risk his staff getting sick or other patients being exposed to something contagious, so please make another appointment. (That info goes out on his phone, text and email appointment reminders, so it should come as no surprise to sick patients that they need to stay home.)

When DH & I had a party in February, a few invitees were unable to attend because someone was sick in their families. Even minor illnesses like head colds aren't overlooked anymore. Very few will say, "Please come anyway."

I think it's a positive change. Even if it's just a cold, who wants to catch it and be sick for a week? Not me, that's for sure!

This is incredibly sad. It must have been so shocking to you and your loved ones.
When I first saw the news about the pandemic I wrongly assumed it was only happening in China so wasn’t overly concerned . Reality set in when my parents nursing home was shut down and nobody could get in without having a Covid test.

I agree 100%. This is just the start of a whole new world of contagious viruses. I doubt we will ever go back to what we deem as ‘normal.’ This is our NEW normal.

People are still buying Chinese goods which backs the Communist Chinese Government
and
Our own government is still doing business with Communist China. (???????)
I understand where you are coming from on this, but there is something to be said about giving China something more to lose if they attack Taiwan, or other neighbors, or increase their support of Russia. If we play all our cards now, then what?

Bella, that's a perfect description of the way the anti-vaxxers treated the scientific and medical community, who were doing their best to save lives! Right on the button, in fact.

I was amazed at the reaction of some to wearing masks. Wearing a mask is tried and true way of stopping the spread of airborne diseases. When you picture a surgeon going into surgery, what is he wearing-a MASK. I couldn't understand one's why right to not wear a mask, overrode spreading disease. You don't have a god given right to drive down the wrong side of the street, so where did the god given right no to wear a mask in a pandemic come from? And, yes, I hated wearing masks, too.

How terrible, so sorry.
It reminds us what a killer this disease can be. How frightening.

When people started hoarding toilet paper from the grocery stores during Covid.

A gal on my other forum wrote...

"For crying out loud people!! This isn't &%$%# ASS DISEASE!!!"

It wasn't so much a surprise as a concern about all the people who needed medical treatment/surgery for things OTHER than covid related illness and were disregarded and put on the back burner.

I myself lived with a mouthful of stitches for months after having my teeth pulled prior to getting implants. The dentists in my area were told to completely shut down right after I got my teeth pulled. It took a long time for them to get permission to help people even on a limited basis.

Two of my friends died of curable cancers in the summer of 2020. I think not being able to see the doctor factored in but will never know for sure.
