What Is Your Current Guilty Pleasure?

My mother used to cook collard greens, having been born and raised down south. She was a fantastic cook, so I ate them when I lived at home, but never really cared for them. I don't remember how she cooked them. Maybe some pork parts went in there. I've never cooked collard greens a day in my life, kale either. I love my broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage. OMG...my mother made the best cabbage! She'd steam them until they were tender with just the water left after washing them. I think she only used butter, not fat back or pork grease.

@officerripley I like that outdoor space and all the greenery! Maybe your husband will finally come around. At least he's opening up about not staying put...well somewhat anyway. I share your "guilty pleasure" of looking at real estate listings, although I rarely check stand alone homes. I call it my weird hobby. I periodically search different locations to see what apartments and condos are available and what they cost. I got started doing that several years ago when I was going to let my honorary daughter (mother of my two youngest grandchildren) move in here and get another place. I considered it because the charges here are so much less than comparable places in N.J. I started looking for senior apartments but there were long wait lists for some and intrusive criteria for others. I was even set to purchase an apartment in our complex for them but the neighbor upped the charge and payment date. Ultimately she told me not to take that deal and to stay put because she (they) needed three bedrooms anyway. I found seeing what's out there to be so interesting that I keep doing it.
I'm from NC and collard greens were a staple at our house, even when we moved to Florida. As I recall, my mother cooked them with bacon. I wasn't a big fan either, but the way she cooked them they were edible. And cabbage... yum. I don't know how she did it.

My grandmother also made the best peach pie I've ever eaten using real biscuits. There is something to be said for Southern cooking.

I am also intimately familiar with fat back and pork grease. Amazing we both lived this long! :ROFLMAO:

My current guilty pleasure is watching "You" on Netflix. I've watched 3 seasons and I'm on Season 4, Episode 8. Now waiting for Season 5 in 2024.

My mother lived to be 97 and ate that way all her life. I know she put fat back in some things and of course, we had bacon. But they worked, they used their bodies in ways that would probably wear us out. Have you ever had peaches and dumplings? Ohhhh..soooooo good! Me being a lazy cook, I'd never bother with making pies, but my mother used to make peaches and dumplings as well as cakes (she was known for her cakes) and pies. The P & Ds were so good and easy, I've made it a few times over the years but I eat too much of it, so haven't made it in a long time.

~Canned peaches
~Biscuit dough (for lazy me...canned dough)
~Sugar or sugar free sweetener to taste*
~Cinnamon to taste*

Combine the ingredients and boil until the dough looks cooked. Let cool a bit and enjoy. It's good warm or cold.
*I very rarely measure added ingredients.

I like to vape. It is 6mg nicotine juice. So far nothing has developed. The first sign of problems, I will quit. I know, that might be too late. There is where the guilt happens. I have a few other "neurotic " habits, that are hard to completely stop. Oh well...another imperfect human.

Chocolate and old, old, old Rock and Roll!
Roy Orbison, Buddy Holly, Gene Pitney, the Platters, the Fleetwoods Johnny Rivers, Rightous Bros.
Unfortunately, I can't eat chocolate any more but I still listen to all these artists from back in the day. I was in high school when they were popular. Good memories :)

I actually indulged in a RHOBH marathon yesterday while I was cleaning and cooking.
The Beverly Hills Housewives shows went back many years- and in every show there was a gathering in which most the women got drunk and started fights with each other. They are all Millionaires and yet they seem unhappy with each other.

I dont know how their husbands can put up with it because they have to hear it all, when the fights happen.

I like the shows when they take trips and the trip to South Holland ,where former member Yolanda was born was wonderful.

They go all over the world-but I guess the show's main attraction is the constant conflict.

Surely, you meant to say, "Banan Split"! Now that makes sense...
No, my doctor was very explicit about not eating bananas. He even hand wrote it on instructions.

I wouldn't have even been eating partial bananas but they were part of a gift and I hate wasting food. You can't exactly go to a neighbor and say "Want these 3 bananas and a grapefruit I can't eat?"

I just spent about 30 minutes researching peaches and dumplings. Something called Po Mans Peach Cobbler got a zillion likes and favorable comments. Wandering around the web is one of my guilty pleasures.

I used to half kill myself looking after two elderly family in my life. Finally I let them go into nursing care because I would have buckled under the strain. It was just too much. Since then they are far better off and I have my life back.
We DO have a duty to ourselves after all. Others in the family, who didn't really help or understand , are grumbling. But I no longer care what they think. I matter too and have my own life to maintain.
Rose, I have had a similar experience!

Isn't it funny how others (family) stand back and watch you help your parents or other relatives in their time of need. Then if the eventually have to go to a hospital or nursing home, these people criticize you for letting that happen. Yet, we did not hear any of them offering to help us when we were helping them, and none of them offered to help with the expenses related to the nursing home or medical care.

Hypocrites is all they are...don't let it bother you...

My chosen brother bought me the new "Who's Next" box set, because it has an entire live show I personally attended at San Francisco (Now Bill Graham) Civic Auditorium. It was the "Who's Next" tour, and hearing it after 50 years brought me to tears. Wild, braying sobs.

I'll write soon about how The Who saved my life (in 1967) and why they have been important to me for almost 60 years. I'm not fond of the current lineup but with Moon and Entwistle, the Who literally saved my life when I was a very suicidal adolescent.

You had to get The Who. They were not like any other band. But they saved my life. No doubt about it.

That's the power rock and roll has.

Collard greens are my favorite veggie! I was at a friends house when I lived in Trenton NY and her kids were eating them for lunch with homemade corn bread. My friend asked me if I wanted some and I sure did- because her kids were eating those greens like they were the best thing in the world-and as soon as I started to eat them( they had pieces of ham hocks in them) I was Smitten! The corn bread was Fabulous too- no Jiffy mix!

My friend's husband had grown the collards himself and I started to do that too- and they grow very well in NY too!

In the winter I buy the Glory brand of canned collards and they are Very good.

In the past, when we went to old time Rock & Roll dances, the lady wore seamed stockings. It was the most innocent of dance moves to spin her. So many fellows taking a furtive peek. Definitely not my guilt trip.

We do have a couple of photos, but you are not going to see them. I want to stay married! However, I can give you an example....................

Collard greens and corn bread...part of a classic southern meal. I used to eat it at home but as mentioned before, I was not a fan, nor will I ever be of collard greens. I guess I'm too much of a city girl. Although for some unknown reason, one of my husband's nicknames for me was Country Girl.
