Heading to Yellowstone next week to do some camping and hiking w my family so brown bears are scaring me right now. In fact our remote camp in the Lamar Valley is closed this week because of bear activity, but due to reopen next week. Although I'm very familiar w the outdoors, it's plants and animals, and the proper brown bear precautions to use I decided to bring a shotgun along (in addition to bear spray.)

My buddy told me about a recent incident that occurred in Yellowstone where 3 fisherman were resting near a creek they were fishing and a brown bear comes barreling down the creek. The fishermen stayed still and the bear passed by w/out noticing them.

The long, snowy winter resulted in an abnormally large number of dead deer and elk all over the intermountain west. Hopefully the bears, and other scavengers will have the winter-kill cleaned up in the valleys soon and head off on their migration to higher elevations soon.
