What to do with canned ham

Follow up....
I did grill a couple of slices and don't recommend it.
Seemed to get more salty and I did not like the texture so I will have the rest of it cold.
I did notice as I sliced through it that the texture changed somewhat so not so sure that I will buy that brand again .

@Mizmo ,

Try these refrigerated vacuum packed ham steaks as an alternative to a canned ham.

They are fully cooked and the small 8oz size is convenient for one or two people.

As far as quality and texture they are similar to a good quality deli sliced ham.

I like them because they usually have a long expiration date and they are relatively inexpensive.

Good luck!

Yes looks good but not available to me in Canada ...... and that is a good size to buy.
I find the deli products just don't taste like ham . That is why I thought to try the tinned stuff.
Perhaps it is that my taste buds are not so good at this ripe old age.
I had to give up my car. last month so not able to shop around as I did before.,,,have to rely on delivery now.

@Mizmo, you may want to try to soak that ham (or any you think is salty) in water to draw out the excess salt before you cook it. We used to soak the country hams we bought years ago to get rid of salt.

We raised hogs for many years. They were a special pig. The "Heritage Guinea" hog. Special, good taste. We did our own butchering for years. So no canned ham for us. We had mighty tasty dishes with all the parts of the gorgeous animal. We appreciated them so much. Their babies are an absolute riot. They are a lot of work...have to be in real good health to take care of them. :)

I normally slice it up then freeze it. Then pull out a slice here and there to cube up for use in making bean or pea soup. It also works in scrambled eggs or omelets. Just don't use additional salt.

But I rarely buy it unless it is on a very deep sale.

HAM/SPUD SOUP

1/8 cup butter
4 green onions chopped
1/2 cup diced celery
4 cups diced potatoes (about 5 average-sized potatoes)
2 cups chicken broth
1/4 tsp black pepper
2 cups milk
1 small onion, chopped
1/2 cup thinly sliced carrots
1 clove minced garlic (or 1/8 tsp garlic powder)
1 cup cubed ham (about 3/4 lb.)
1-1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp dried parsley (or 2 tsp fresh chopped parsley)
1/4 cup grated cheddar cheese

Put butter, regular onion, carrots, celery, and garlic into large saucepan and saute until 'till onion is soft and clear. Add green onions, potato, ham, chicken broth, salt, pepper, and parsley and bring to boil. Cover and simmer 'till vegetables are cooked, stirring occasionally. Stir in milk and heat through, without boiling (about 2-1/2 to 3 minutes). Garnish with grated cheese. Makes 4-5 cups.

Look for Maple Leaf foods, or Schneiders from Kitchener , both make nice ham in various selections. JIMB.
Follow up..

I did buy Canned Maple Leaf Ham as you suggested and was very pleased with it. Thanks
More like a solid piece of ham than the other brand I bought.
Had two dinners and froze three slices which I had for dinner last night.
I patted them dry with paper towel and had with french fries and cole slaw and enjoyed it enough to make me buy another tin.

No cooking at all and if anyone is interested I did my frozen fries in the microwave for 40 seconds and they were just like McDonald's... Yay! I will never do them in oven again.
'Crispy ' is out for me now with the old teeth.

Thanks for the update on the ham!

I’m curious about the brand and method for preparing the fries in the microwave.

I used to buy these single serving packages for an occasional treat but they have disappeared from the local stores.

I am in Canada but you can look for same description.
Mine are McCain's Super Fries, Straight Cut. Just plain potato. No crisp or crinkle.
You must have something similar in your stores.
I put them in a microwave dish and find with my oven 40 seconds is just perfect except for smaller ones
they might be a little crispy
My oven is only 1000 watts so try a few out first. Yours might be higher . I got the 40 seconds on mine after two tries.

I buy a small canned ham ($3.88 at WalMart) and do this in the crockpot... whole family always loved it.

Ham, Green Beans, & Potatoes

Put liner in crockpot or spray it. Add:
3 potatoes, bite sized pieces (or however many you need... recipe is very adjustable)
2 cans green beans (I use no salt added)
pepper
onion powder
garlic powder
Canned ham cut into dices/bite sized pieces
2-3 cups chicken broth (I use Herb Ox No salt packets)
4 tbsp butter (cut up)

Add potatoes, beans, and ham to crockpot. Season with pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder. Sometimes I use Cajun seasoning, too. Add the broth, enough to cover potatoes... for the larger slow cooker, I sometimes need 4 cups. Put butter on top of everything and cook on low for 7 hours. (Or high for 4, but I always do low.)
I can see the ham and green beans becoming delicious, but don't those little potato pieces turn into mush after 7 hours?

No, they really don't (but may if being done on high.) I was expecting that the first time, but it worked well. It can be turned off as soon as the potatoes are done since the ham's already cooked. The 7 hours works for me, but less time would be fine if 'taters are soft.
