What would you fight and possibly die to protect?

Gaer

"Angel whisperer"
All of us would fight and die to protect our family and loved ones. What other issues or quests would you stand up to protect, regardless of the consequences?
Your spirituality?
your country?
the world?
your possessions?
all your money?
political beliefs?
your religion?
human rights?
animal rights?
the Constitution?
food and water?
strangers?
freedom?
your home?
This is BESIDES YOUR LOVED ONES!

Your spirituality? Possibly. I admire the action of Max Kolbe who sacrificed himself to save another prisoner of the Nazis.
your country? If my country were to be invaded (unlikely) I would help the resistance and shelter people.
the world? Can't imagine ever being called to do that. I'm not going to set myself on fire to bring attention to global warming.
your possessions? No. Possessions are not important
all your money? Again no, for the same reason
political beliefs? No, my beliefs could be wrong
your religion? Possibly. See my first answer.
human rights? Possibly. I hate all forms of human slavery and exploitation of children. I'd take a risk to free someone.
animal rights? Probably not because I am never likely to be in a life threatening situation in this regard.
the Constitution? As an Aussie I have to answer no. The courts are there to protect constitutions.
food and water? Hard to say. I am old and would probably prefer that food and water, if scarce, go to young women and children. Refer again to Max Kolbe.
strangers? Possibly. I haven't ever been tested in this regard.
freedom? Only as a last resort. There are other options that should be used to protect freedom. On the other hand, if I were a captive wanting to be free I might take action that would be reckless.
your home? No. When the fires come close, it is time to leave. Home is where you hang your hat and where your loved ones are.

food and water?
freedom?

Yes to the above.

the world? Only if in risk of ending.

your possessions? Can be replaced, or you can do without.
all your money? Never been one of my first priorities.
political beliefs? Useless.
your religion? To each his/her own.
strangers? They can take care of themselves, unless being hurt and I would be able to help in some way.
your home? Can be replaced.

This is really hard to answer.

I think its one of those things that you know when you see.

For example "my country" on the one hand it seems right to say I'd die defending it, if necessary, but I am not sure I'd know what "necessary" would be until faced with it.

And there is a big difference between risking your life and knowing you would die. Easier to be a fighter pilot with some chance of survival than a kamikaze.

If some powerful enemy invaded the US across one of our borders I probably would, on the other hand if it were some less clear threat, like possible terrorists in some far away country I am not so sure.

Freedom is another grey area. We do not have complete freedom now, and there are freedoms I would give up rather than risk death. On the other hand if you are talking about going into a concentration camp for the rest of my life I'd be more willing to fight.

It certainly is an interesting question to ponder, but I probably didn't give the definitive answer you were asking for.

Last night I watched the movie Suffragette and was reminded of the sacrifices made and the courage displayed by ordinary working women who were fighting for social and legal justice for themselves and for all women in England. What they did and endured was astonishing. I'm not sure that I would have been shoulder to shoulder with them but I hope I would have supported the cause.

I appreciate your considerate pontification! You brought up several possibilities!

OK, serious answer;

I really don't know until the occasion arises.

It all depends on circumstances.
I tend to get riled when youngsters, small animals, old folks get abused.

I've surprised myself more than a few times.

Folks seem to think a normally jovial guy is a push over.
That's quite distant from the truth.

The advantage to being usually good humored...is mine.
The surprised look on an enemy's face is something I've come to savor.
But only after my rage has subsided.

I tend to not see much of anything once angered.
