I was just so damn naive when this happened. I was just oblivious to sex at the time. I went out with a guy for whom looked like Tom Selleck, but he was just so beyond hairy, it wasn't funny. I never had that lust feeling for him. He left a note on my windshield at my workplace saying, "Play me or trade me". Well, little did he know I already traded him for a man I wanted to rape. Literally I wanted to jump on that man when I first saw him and do things beyond his wildest dreams. Almost 43 years later this coming November, we're still married. Kind of a neat story huh?
 

Hey since all of you Londoners are on here maybe we can exchange meanings. I recently read the House of Lords. Does that mean the senate like our country? Prime Minister. Is that the President of your country? Your titles are much classier than our superior titles here in the USA. I watch BBC once in a while and still wonder what Bullocks means. Is Cheers a hello or have a good day? Cheers here means toasting drinks. I think I know mates are friends or does it mean more?

It would just be so nice to exchange meanings. Can't wait to exchange and I'll keep posting words I hear and maybe our classy Londoners will define what they mean. Vice versa. If you hear an American word and wonder "What the heck does that mean?" Let's indeed exchange definitions. Doesn't that sound fun for a change?

See I was the same I grew up with no AC,,never even had a fan... and for all my adult life I've had no AC in this house.... because until 5 years ago we never had these extreme temperatures on a regular basis...despte being in the south..

Now I could have it installed even tho' it's expensive because so few have it here in their homes.. but I'm really hoping to be able to move house in the near future so I don't want to spend out on expensive fittings...

Don't they have window units in GB?, or does an A/C unit require a change in household electrical current?

LOL...I have been a member of this mainly American forum for coming up to 12 years..I've learned every word I think in American general Usage and their different meanings to ours..as well as the differnet spellings...


In answer to your questions..

Prime minister..he's the leader of our country like your president...

The house of commons are who make the decisions and laws to be passed generally and each of those MP's are elected .....but the house of Lords..is the Upper Parliament , and they are not elected they inherit their positon in the house of Lords by and large, or buy it through a Peerage...or be the boss of a huge corporation and pay a fee ...to Parliament
They work alongside the PM and the house of commons......


Bullocks are Steers...cattle.... if you mean Ballocks.. that a derogatory term meaning ''rubbish''..nonsense... and also a slang word for testicles..


Cheers can be etiher a greeting... or a thank you... or toasting somone with a drink... it very rarely means goodbye unless someone has done something for you..like put fuel in your tank for example, we might say Cheers as we drive of, as a combined thank you/cheerio... but really it's used almost exclusively in the first 3 examples..

They are very rare because of the way our windows ae made it wouldn't be easy to install one of those...plus let's be fair they are ugly things.. no need for a change in electrical current they'd all run off the same 230 volts like everythig ese..

Ballocks is the word I guess I was looking for but, on this side, (The USA) it always seems derogative coming from the BBC in a way, so I guess Ballocks is the way we're to define what we hear derogatively. I wonder if it's compatible to the word bullshit here in the U.S. Thanks for the learning lesson. I still say Englanders words and titles are much more elegant compared to the USA. As mentioned above, very classy titles. Ballocks? I guess not so much. Cheers!

yes simialr to Bullshit, but we also bullshit...Ballocks is a more derogatory way to say BS...more like crap !

for example if I think you're an idiot, and you tell me the moon is green..I would either say Ballocks ( which is generally a word used by men rather than females ).. or Crap.....

However if I don't see you as a fool and you say the Moon is green I'll just call BS..

The other way Bollocks is used as well is if we do something stupid.. like miss the bus ..or drop something and smash it... or suddenly remember we should have dome something and now it's missed.. we'll say ''oh Bollocks.''...

generally speaking it's classed as a mild swear word here

I do; I have three. My youngest was born a scant 4 weeks after 9/11, in the midst of the anthrax nightmare. During the month of the sniper shootings, three times I started to pack up the kids' stuff and decamp to my sister's house in North Carolina.

After someone was murdered across the street from us in 2003 we moved to rural Nevada.

My daughters and I have discussed nuclear war, and they are of the same mind I am. If you've seen my other posts you likely already know my son has cut me out of his life.

Well----we were in the DC area at the exact same time! I lived in a community called Lake of the Woods and later, when it was still safe, Fredericksburg. I ran on Lake of the Woods rescue squad as a Medic....small world.

She had to sleep on her front porch a few years ago because it was too hot inside her house. It was above 100 degrees!

Another of my friends there just had her house remodeled. Her husband said they decided to install A/C because a couple of years ago they had to stay in the house and keep the windows closed due to the smoke from the fires in Western Canada. :(

I've seen the temps in the Northeast and Midwest this weekend and they are unbearable. Very few good choices to live these days when it comes to extreme climate.

I had no idea about lack of air conditioning in Seattle! Must have been a milder climate there until things started heating up.

What I don't get though, is why peeps don't put in window box air conditioners. They're relatively inexpensive and very easy to install in a window. What am I missing there? It must be something because people would do it, otherwise.

Okay, that explains why people in UK don't use them. - Although, would you really care about ascetics if it meant not suffering? Because I gotta say, I would not.

I agree that they are not the most attractive addition to the exterior of a house.

We have both central air conditioning and window box units here because the house has had additions put on that don't get the ventilation well enough. But I haven't put a window box unit in the front of the house, where the master bedroom is, because that part of the house faces the street and it doesn't look nice. And the central air gets to that room well enough that it's alright, (just not as well refrigerated as in the rest of the house), without it.

I'm still feeling for you guys and hope the heat wave breaks soon. 🤗

Side Note: My husband is feeling so bad for my boyfriend that he was on Amazon last night looking for a countertop mini-swamp cooler to send him.
