Who's the most famous person you've ever met?

I was in the third grade when Monte Montana and his horse came to our school. I remember being very impressed by a big star at our school. Frankly I don't know if he was even a small star.

Then many years later as part of a greeting group I got to meet and greet Pierre Trudeau. He was Prime Minister at the time.

Growing up in So Cal at a time when ‘STARS!’ Earned good money but not the tens and hundred of millions and millions they do todayI ran into many of them from time to time. So they lived among the rest of us, usually in a bigger house maintained by all sorts of people they could afford to pay. One big name comedian lived down the street from me. He had a lot of very NICE cars which fascinated we young guys on the block.

Often their child went to school with me, or they shopped at the department store where I worked. Once in a while I just saw them eating with friends at a local restaurant. They put their pants on one leg at a time like the rest of us. I never bothered them for autographs. I dated a gal whose cousin was a big name in the Bikini Beach movies of the 60’s.

Ho humm…. Can we talk about something interesting now, like the PhD who serves me burgers at the fast food restaurant?

Wow. That is exciting!
A boss of mine attended Princeton and told the story of his roommate sitting next to Einstein at an event. Einstein took the opportunity to ask the roommate questions about how his car engine worked.
Einstein was famous for asking questions that did not relate to physics. He asked me if I intended to become a doctor after I graduated from nursing school. The answer was an emphatic, no!

Did I mention before I met Bill Clinton in 1992 and when I shook his hand and we spoke I almost fainted because he was so tall, handsome and sexy? I couldn't speak I was so thrilled and sweaty, but luckily my little boy struck up a conversation about some type of scientific conductor that was proposed. Bill gave my son a lot of time seriously discussing it with him. We have his autograph.

I met a ton of famous people. It's fun.

One of our granddaughters flying home with family struck up a conversation with Robert Redford. Her mother explained to that he was a movie star and she should ask him for his autograph. Never meeting a stranger she presented piece of paper which he graciously signed even asking her name. After thanking him she asked if he would like her autograph, and with a huge smile produced some paper for her autograph. When departing the plane he told our daughter with his trademark smile that he expects to see her well received in some important public position one day. Priceless

List of celebrity encounters in my life
Watched Robert DeNiro film outdoor scenes for a week around the block from where I was living in Connecticut. (The film, Jacknife, is a 1989 American film directed by David Jones and starring Robert De Niro, Ed Harris and Kathy Baker.)

This is the house exterior around the block from where we lived. This was shot during that week.

Watched David Morse, who starred in The Green Mile with Tom Hanks, walk around a shopping mall I was also walking around. I went up to him to verify his identity but didn't want to cause a scene (a few people began to gather so he took off up an escalator.)

Muhammad Ali, having just got out of a limousine, crossed my path as I walked around downtown Philadelphia.
James Doohan, Scotty from Star Trek, talked with us outside a studio before appearing on a local daytime talk show. I was in the audience for the taping of the show.

When JFK was campaigning in 1960 we were crossing a street in Greenwich Village and there he was sitting atop a convertible at the intersection. We waved and shouted and he shouted and waved. It was the end of the day and the street was deserted and whatever function he attended was over. We had been to see the off-Broadway production of 3 Penny Opera. I didn't exactly meet him but it was a memorable experience. My date was from England and he was equally excited and impressed.

When I was a senior in high school (spring 1963), JFK gave a speech in Cleveland and his motorcade going back to the airport stopped, as pre-arranged, in front of our all-boys Catholic high school. The president of our senior class gave him a football and several people got to shake his hand (not me). I was relatively close to him when he stopped. It was for me a memorable experience. In 1971, my wife and I were married in the Washington D.C. Catholic church that JFK had attended during his presidency.

You're right about that. I lived in Hollywood for two stretches from '68--'84, first in Laurel Canyon, then in Hollywood on Cherokee Ave. You never knew who you'd run into.

I stood in line at the grocery story behind Jimmie "Dyn-o-mite" Walker of Good Times. Danny Kaye one time pulled up beside me in his limo to ask where the nearest pay phone was. I sat right next to Bob Hope and his manager in the next booth at Musso & Franks one night. Steve Landesberg was there as well.. Another night I was eating with a local video director. We noticed Roger Ebert sitting nearby. When he noticed my friend, he waved very warmly.

But my biggest thrill was meeting Muhammad Ali at Louie St. Pierre's Magic Shop on Hollywood Blvd. Ali was crazy about magic, so he'd stop into the store when he was in town. I saw Ali's 2-tone brown limo parked in front of the store in a no parking zone, so I walked in to check it out. Several people were wanting to shake his hand. When it was my turn, he stuck out his hand, and I shook it, but I was stumped for something to say, so I just said "You're the greatest". Dumb.

I have met a couple of Canadian celebrities on several occasions. Graham Greene, who I believe got an academy award nomination for his role in "Dances With Wolves". Bruce Cockburn is a Canadian singer/song writer that I have met several times. He did a lot of political/protest type of songs. "If I Had a Rocket Launcher" is one that most people might know of. I think both of them may still live in Southern Ontario.
