Why should God(s) help us if we don't help ourselves and others?

Reminds me of the old "take up the deadly serpents" religious sect. At least they were playing with their own lives and not others.
I often see such recklessness in religious people. Whenever they're lucky & don't get hurt, they frequently talk about how God protected them. They try to prove God's existence by putting themselves in danger, then say something like, "See? I told ya so."
The deadly snake act is especially pathetic - only because it's cruel to the snakes. When someone is bitten, they deserve it.

Oh, and one other thing: What's he doing in a hospital if he (and his moronic wife) said God would cure him?

Roman's 8:28
And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.

Religious leaders that call for defiance of what is hoped will help stem the spread of the virus could believe that a supernatural being billions of years old will not let harm happen to their congregation.

Is this virus a test of faith? Is God working for the good of those that love him?
If so, why are clerics dying of the virus?

I have nothing against snakes, but really - kissing a poisonous snake? I wonder if there is anyone left alive from that sect? "Let's fixate on one line from the 'Good Book', interpret it our own way, and kill off our flock to prove their faith."

This is one example of a snake having more sense in that one brain than all the brains in that whole room put together.
Just as I cheer when a bullfighter loses, I cheer when anyone abuses animals & pays the price.
I just wish it happened more often.

all the churches around us are closed and saying stay home, ours as well. some are handing out food or buying food or delivering to shut ins other than that everyone i at home
Thank you for posting this - something so very positive and uplifting! Stay well!

This went off-topic, so please see original post - BUT, this is important to me, so.....

Yup. In Ohio, we have Goddard's Law - a weatherman and lifelong supporter of animal rights: "Goddard's Law, which makes certain acts of animal cruelty felony crimes, passed the Ohio legislature late Wednesday night with broad bipartisan support. ... House Bill 60 makes knowingly causing physical harm to a companion animal a fifth-degree felony, punishable by six months to a year in jail and a $2,500 fine. "

I don't believe in God, but I do believe in science. Science shows that maintaining social distancing is our best option for now.
As I mentioned earlier - the virus doesn't discriminate on any basis. Most of our politicians are now listening to the scientists... We should be listening to the scientists and the directives of our governments and health agencies.

"God helps those who help themselves" is probably the most often quoted phrase that is not found in the Bible. This saying is usually attributed to Ben Franklin, quoted in Poor Richard’s Almanac in 1757. In actuality, it originated from Algernon Sydney in 1698 in an article titled Discourses Concerning Government.
It occurs to me that God helps those who help others.

HAHA. He actually knows he's not right. If he was right, he wouldn't have to tell anyone because they'd already know it.
I had a supervisor who always told employees, "I demand respect." I told her, "Those who demand respect know they don't deserve it. If they earned respect, they'd never have to demand it."

IMO, God is involved in this only from the standpoint of providing aid and comfort to whoever calls on Him/Her. The virus itself has nothing to do with God. The virus is a force of nature. I think everyone needs to remember this-the virus is a force of nature.

I can’t say that often enough-to myself or anyone else. The Black Plague, the Spanish flu, smallpox, and whatever else, force of nature. Science may or may not find a cure. We may or may not gain herd immunity. Still in all, the human race will continue.

Isn't there a religion forum somewhere? My thread was about congregations not congregating until this pandemic is over... it digressed badly.

As is typical for this type of discussion - having a separate religious category won't stop the thread from quickly derailing.

How often have you been to these type of services? Fairly frequently it seems. :devilish:

The pat answer is

God works in mysterious ways.

Maybe a pandemic is a little less drastic than flooding the earth. That benevolent caring God gave us all free will. With that free will unlike God killing masses has been reduced to wars that haven't done as good a job.

Maybe, in retrospect, I shouldn't have used the reference to "God(s)" in the thread heading. Perhaps "clergy" would be less incendiary. It just seemed to lead to personal sniping in places, not an open discussion or way to express opinion on the topic of congregations not congregating during this coronavirus pandemic (whether they agree with mine or not.) Live and learn.
