Its funny, about 5-8 years ago most in the US had no idea what soccer was and that includes me.
The US already has a ton of sports that are followed. However, there is still a good percentage who pay attention to the World Cup (every 4 years if you didn't know that). The US did really well during the 2002 World Cup and I was, of course, cheering for them. I find football (soccer in the US) the most interesting game to watch. I'm hoping before I die that Scotland will once again play in the World Cup.

Josiah, I would guesstimate that probably seventy-five percent of Canadians would have rooted for the Americans. If it had been hockey, that would be a different story. Lol.
