Your President and the EU

Local reports say that your President wants us to remain in the EU.

Any of you guys tell me how this can possibly be of concern to him?

Your PM should just tell him to bugger off...

It's a given that these politicians have to come up with Something to justify the expense of their "high level" meetings....whether they intend to follow through with their ideas, or not. It will probably cost the taxpayers 10's of millions of dollars to send Obama, and his massive "entourage" on one of these meetings, so he, and the rest of these "leaders" need to come up with something to feed the press to make the people think they actually did something. It's too bad these politicians have never discovered the value of things like "Teleconferencing".

Politicians at the the G-20 will have no problems furnishing copy for the media or the peons back home who foot the bill. The U.S. president and the German Chancellor are the stars in attendance and both have responsibility to commit on whatever. Not to worry.

Anyone who isn't a parochial American, apparently.

Jim, are you aware that comments like your latest one appear to be an attempt to shut down a discussion that you don't want to participate in?
Not participating is fine but allow others to go with the flow if they want to.

I'd like a link to hear what Obama actually said. "Local reports" isn't enough for me without substantiation.

I have no desire to shut down debate. I have, however the right to my opinion. You may not agree with it, but it remains my prerogative.

My comment was not about your having an opinion.
I'm all for opinions.
It was about tone.
Sometimes we don't realise how we come across when we make short sharp comments.

I'm not sure yet whether this is a thread worth talking about, but I would like to explore it a bit more before it is shut down.

Quicksilver, there are many threads here that I don't care for but I've learnt to just turn off because when I've made a negative comment it's been pointed out that I have been a spoiler of other people's fun.

Some of us like to look at world events and talk about them. Now look how that has been completely sidelined in this thread.

Laurie, where are you? Can you supply a link to justify your OP?

So what is the thread about? Obama wants the UK to stay in the EU... big deal.. what's the outrage? And what does the UK care what Obama says? We don't really care what Cameron says.

I've looked this up for myself. It's subtle diplomatic pressure on Cameron prior to the UK referendum on whether the UK should withdraw from the EU. In some quarters this could be seen as interference in another country's domestic affairs, although it could also be said that if the UK does withdraw, the EU could be further destabilised. This could have implications for US foreign policy.

President Barack Obama has reaffirmed his support for Britain staying in the European Union, saying the country's influence is positive both on the continent and around the world.
Obama's comments came at the start of a meeting with British Prime Minister David Cameron on the sidelines of the G-7 summit. It's their first meeting since Cameron's party pulled off an unexpectedly strong victory in elections last month.

Cameron, under pressure from the right wing UK Independence Party and many in his own Conservative Party, has committed to a referendum on whether to withdraw from the 28-nation bloc. The referendum is planned by the end of 2017.

Obama didn't explicitly mention the referendum but said he looks forward to Britain "staying a part of the European Union."

I agree, DW. Our hopefully soon to be back in Alberta where he belongs(deep breath, lol)prime minister, puckers up to The American president. Fortunately, Obama is an honourable man, or who knows what Harper would agree to. Sooo glad the republicans are not in power, or Harpoon would give them the keys to our country and most of our water supply.lol. Gotta trust a man who denies climate change.
