Zelenskyy and the spirit of Ukraine are 'Time' magazine's 2022 Person of the Year

I believe what my vets who have returned from serving in Ukraine tell me. I believe what Ukrainian refugees tell me. I trust my own instincts also.

I’ll say this again, Zelensky is NOT the man they want you to believe he is.

After obtaining a law degree, Zelensky, became a comedian, television personality and actor.
He hosted a comedy show, “Liga Smeha” (“League of Laughter”), and won Ukraine’s “Dancing With the Stars” in 2006.

He was born in the industrial city of Kryvyi Rih in central Ukraine and raised in a Soviet Jewish family. Many of his relatives were killed by Nazis during the Holocaust.

That's what I know and need to know about this wonderful person. If you have "inside" information, please share it with poor ignorant me!!

Do you really believe that Ukraine is winning the war With Russia? Do you really believe that? It's easy to find news items on the internet that tells everyone how great the Ukraine's are and have been holding off the Russians, yet their country is in decay with buildings in rubble and people starving. We see pictures of their country, but have no idea as to when they were taken.

How can I prove anything? The media is so biased that they only report what the government tells them or allows them to report. This is a new world we are living in today. Everything is so covertly covered up that no one is getting the truth.

The final analysis will be when the war ends. Then, the truth will come out.

If I am spreading propaganda, what are you spreading? You are simply believing and repeating what you are being told on the TV news. So, please stop attacking me for voicing my opinion, or are you also against the1st Amendment? I gave an opinion that I don't think Zelensky is the person he wants you to believe he is. That's what is called an opinion.

If we are no longer permitted to express our opinions, you may as well shut down this and all forums.
Got it. You have no facts to back up your allegations. You are entitled to your own opinion but keep in mind, that is all it is.

You can smear President Zelenskyy to your heart's content, they are fighting for their lives in Ukraine and needed help to survive this deadly attack from dictator Putin. They may or may not 'win', but they sure as hell deserve credit for being strong, united and patriotic in their fight against this attack from this murderous tyrant. May all their dead rest peacefully, hoping Putin will be stopped soon, one way or another. Strength and peace for President Zelenskyy and the people of Ukraine.

Zelensky will probably get very rich - just like so many political figures - and the people of Ukraine will suffer. Follow the money - if you can.
This war isn't about money, it's about people and the right to freedom. Tell Ukranians who are being bombed you'll give them a million dollars to leave. They will spit on you!

I know that - but how much of the money that other countries have given to Zelensky is going to benefit the citizens of Ukraine and how much is going in his pocket and in the pockets of the politicians making the donations.

I totally agree with this @SeaBreeze! We stand together with Ukraine and its people.
There should be more people in this world to stand up for their rights to freedom and fewer like nasty Putin and his kind.
Period.
Here's a few links to some current info if anyone is interested. I'm certainly not an expert on war, but nice to have some idea of what's going on as Russia attacks Ukraine. All I'm sure of is many of us want peace for Ukraine and want Putin stopped in this slaughter.

The U.S. government offered to evacuate Zelensky at the beginning of hostilities. Zelensky's reply, "I don't need a ride, I need ammunition."

Reading that, my immediate thought was, "No that's a leader I can support." So far, I haven't changed my mind.
President Zelenskyy has all my respect and admiration. He is intelligent, brave and truly compassionate for the welfare of his people and his country. The deadly attacks have been non-stop, but thankfully he has the support of many countries in their fight for freedom and democracy.

Right at this moment in time, This doesn't concern me one bit. When the citizens of Ukraine are allowed to live like humans again, without trembling at bomb drops, air raid sirens, and tucking their children in a safe bed at night.....then, I'll consider where all the extra funding has gone.
Until then.......Ukranians are winning the war, and showing the rest of the world what bravery and loyalty to country is.

Very true. It's clear to anyone paying attention that it is in no way about money. The only devious intentions are on the part of dictator Putin.

Well said.

This is a very interesting thread. It’s hard for me to tell what IS political and what ISN‘T political here, offering this thread and the long socialism thread as examples.

That aside, I will say that in my opinion the Ukrainian people should have been named People of the Year!

I agree - I hope the war ends quickly - but I don't agree with those posters who think Zelensky is an angel. I think a lot of taxpayers would like some transparency now.

This is why the US, Canada, UK and European countries are giving Ukraine weapons and equipment instead of cash. All the cash is going to the Red Cross and other organizations doing humanitarian services, and they're using the cash for stuff like warming stations, infrastructure, medicines and food.

And that's why, when our president says "we're giving a billion to Ukraine," and then right after that he says "we're giving an additional million," what he's saying is the US giving a billion dollars worth of military weapons, plus a million actual dollars for humanitarian services.

It's interesting to me that there is resistance on the right to giving Ukraine what it needs to fight Russia.

I don't get it. Russia is an awful dictatorship that has invaded a democratic country. (Yes, I know Ukraine has had issues with corruption.)

For once, our allies such as the UK and Germany are not only behind us, but ahead of us. They know that fighting Putin via a proxy war in Ukraine may bring down the whole Russian government.

This is one time when humanitarian motives align with geopolitical motives. Give the Ukrainians what they need and maybe we can get rid of Putin in the process. It would be well worth the expenditure.

You mention that Hitler was "Man of the year" way back when. I remember shopping for groceries and as I "waltzed" by the news stand there it was. I believe it was "Time" magazine. On the cover was a close-up photo of George Bush and the caption read, "GREAT MILITARY LEADER." This was in Canada.

I wouldn't comment anymore so as not to offend those that voted for him. Anyway, how does one decided on the "Man of the Year." There are lots of them and hey, let's not forget the ladies. By the way, what does "Man of the Year" mean?

I am concerned that the money is NOT going to be used to help the Ukranians - it will make its way into the pockets of a bunch of corrupt politicians. How will that help the Ukrainian people?

This puzzled me, too, so I looked into it...apparently, the right is accusing the left of including spending that's completely unrelated to the war in Ukraine. Problem is, I couldn't find any specifics. Like I can't find how much, if any, is earmarked for things that are irrelevant to the war. So until I see where the issue is, I'm saying it's BS. But why they're creating BS that could delay the help, I don't know. Fortunately, funds to support Ukraine keep passing by a landslide.

There is (I believe) a troglodyte element on the right that is pro-dictator. They like Putin and quasi-dictators like Orban in Hungary. They are the ones making the most noise. Center-right and center-left are united in support of Ukraine.

Which George Bush? Bush number 1 was in fact a great military leader. Bush 2, maybe ok tactically but dead wrong on what he jokingly called "strategery."

Man of the Year is just the person who had the most impact on the world that year. There is not supposed to be a moral evaluation attached, hence Hitler, Stalin and others.

Time Magazine barely exists as a publication and it's sort of funny that anyone pays attention to whom it selects as Man of the Year.
