Checks/checking account

Was reading another thread, & that brought this question.

Do any others here still use checks ? checking account(s)? To those that do, do you find that some of the debtors do not "cash" the check, withdrawal the amount in a timely manner? It is sometimes difficult to keep the checking account balanced on a day-to-day basis , and of course that drifts into the next month, etc & so-on.

Sometimes my deposit for example is made before last months, last withdrawal is registered , then the amounts are out of whack. Hard to explain here in type.

I always pay [issue the check] on time, usually just as they arrive.........but the withdrawal might actually be several days, perhaps a week or more later.

As for my deposit, usually made , [again] within a day or so of receiving .

I'm hearing checks & such are becoming a thing of the past ?

I haven't written a check or used a stamp since April when I paid my income tax.

I was reluctant to sign up for automatic payments and paperless billing but so far it has worked without a hitch. I finally did it because I was concerned that if I landed in the hospital for a few days the bills might be late. Now the money flows in and the money flows out with no intervention on my part. The only thing that I do is read the various emails letting me know a payment is scheduled.

This was discussed in another thread a while back ... but anyway, when you write a check, deduct the amount at the same time from your account. Keep your records up to date on your end. You wrote the check ... money is gone after it leaves your hand.
When they cash it ... that's irrelevant.

Yeah, I was reluctant too
Now? I love it!

I opted for no emails
I made a hard copy in/out schedule to enhance my budget, and watch my account on line like a hawk

While I see your point,... it is relevant [at least too me] when the banks balance & mine do not match.

I just looked and in 2018 I wrote 3 checks.

So far in 2019 I've written one.

But I still use the check registers to keep track of my payments, deposits, ATM withdrawals, etc. So I use a whole lot more registers than I do checkbooks.

For the past several years I have been asking for extra check registers whenever I go into my credit union. And I've been hoarding up a stash of them in anticipation of the day when there companies that sell checks no longer are willing to hand out extra registers for free. At first the cashiers were always very pleasant and happily handed over three registers whenever I asked. But as time went on they did so more and more begrudgingly The last time they only gave me one. And told me that their check supplier had informed them that they would not be getting any more extras. Fortunately I have been able to stockpile about a dozen so I'm good for a while.

But I got to worrying about what I was going to do when they ran out. Then I got an idea! I went to the Amazon website and did a search for "check registers" and lo and behold they sell generic ones! :)

And they're cheap! $5.20 for 10.

That means that after all my begging and hoarding over the past several years the stash of check registers that I have aquired has a value of about $6 bucks.

Me too
It's my religion
I made copies of my check register blanks
Enlarged them a bit as the registers of late seem too tiny for much detail

Outstanding checks at the end of the month can always play a part in balancing . .. the worst (?) that can happen, is they never cash the check and you have extra funds in your account months later. ... How dreadful ..😀

I still use checks. I like writing them, I like sending them, I like putting the stamp on the envelope. I like the check register and I still get paper statements in the mail. My checks are completely free, free, free, free as is my checking account. I'll do this to be a pain in someone's backside, esp. Walmart's, until I'm told I can't anymore or the auto payment artifice collapses with the rest of human infrastructure. (Cue maniacal laughter)

I have had a checking account for years. My checks are DD. I never had paper checks until after my husband died, then I ordered a set. Just for the very few bills I have to pay that do not have online payments, or do not accept credit/debit card payments. I ordered 100 checks and will probably go a while before using them all.

I still use checks but not often. When I do, it is for those that I can't do it electronically and don't have the cash at the time to pay them.

I want to reply and I want my reply to go underneath the original post, how do you do that?
I'm going to experiment and see if I can do iit

I still write checks for certain things like a gift for a Wedding and Birthday etc. Other than that I pay all things electronically.
Likewise for me, Sassy, but my husband still prefers to write checks for certain bills. He's a bit old school with things like that. If it works for him, I'm cool with it because we've always had separate checking accounts.

We send money back and forth as needed and are on each other's accounts. Since banks offer the accounts free of charge, it makes more sense for us each to deal with certain bills. I only track my own balance and he, his.

No this isn't right, I wanted the reply directly underneath original post without the copying and pasting parts of original post.

Hi - I'm not sure what you're trying to do, but a good place to test things out would be on this thread:

Generally speaking, this area of the forum is where to sort out technical questions:

Hope that helps!
