Is New York Preparing for Nuclear Attack?

I watched the news on News Nation and they told the story about New York putting out a PSA (Public (Service Announcement) about what to do in case of a nuclear attack. I had to kind of smile a bit when they said either to stay indoors or get indoors. I don’t know the real reason for doing this, but I am sure it may scare some people. Although I never did it, my mom used to tell me that back in her day, they were taught to get under their desk if they were in school and just like a fire drill, they had nuclear attack drills or whatever they called them.

WoW! That immediately brings back all the memories of 50's and having "Nuclear Bomb Drills." Hide under your desk...stay away from windows...etc. Scary stuff. It didn't happen back then, and I am relatively sure it won't happen in the near future, especially by surprise.

I agree to a point, but with this war going on in Ukraine, I’m not sure how much longer Russia is going to stay in the game. NATO nations have joined together to help to keep funding Ukraine, but at some point if this war should escalate into Poland or other countries in NATO, that may draw us into it. It won’t be good for any of us and with us all but in a recession, it may really put a hurting on our economy.

I saw that PSA ...... scary indeed. But in the crazy world that it is today ..... I suppose precautions are not out of the question.

I remember the "Nuke" drills of grade school. That said as someone already pointed out ........ In the modern nuclear arsenal I seriously doubt , that there are any precautions we can count on ?

Personnaly , if it comes to a nuclear attack ....... I kinda hope the first one lands in my lap ..... I don't think I would want to survive ...... and try to live in the following nuclear winter.

I have seen pictures of survivors from the attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Not at all pretty. Depending on the size of the bomb, which would be the amount of kilos of the explosive, plus the radioactive material contained in the bomb and the size of the fire ring when it explodes, it would be possible to be vaporized if the person is within the fire ring and the amount of heat produced by it.

There is a formula to figure it out, if you know the size of the bomb and the amount of explosive used, but I am not a physicist, so I would have to look it up, but we don’t really need to know that information anyway.

"but I am not a physicist, "

Nor am I ....... but those were Atomic ......... as i understand it ........ Nuclear is just more powerful & deadly.

OK, so while I was in college studying aviation, we did touch on Atomic energy. a nuclear bomb and an Atomic bomb are ‘basically’ one in the same. The difference in the the two bombs is how the atoms are split . One by fusion and one by fission. For me to go any deeper, I would need to fill a page of worthless information that almost no one would care to read. However, if you want to dig into it, I am sure that there is plenty of information on the web.

When I worked for United, my home airport was Washington. From time to time, I would stay in D.C. just as a matter of convenience. To pass the time, I would visit the Smithsonian. This place is huge. There is a Nuclear and Science section in one part of the Institute. I don’t know where you live, but if you really want to explore more about Nuclear Fusion and Fission, that’s the place to start.

In college, I took a double major in engineering; Design Engineering and Aviation Engineering. My first consideration after college was to be an Aerospace Engineer and work for NASA as a Propulsion Engineer, but I learned soon enough that I just wasn’t as smart as I thought I was. When it came to remembering formulas to come up with the needed amounts of propulsion to lift off rockets with boosters to get the shuttle or whatever vehicle is attached into space, Man, I was lost in space myself. I ended up working for DuPont.

Here in Britain, no-one seems worried. I think the belief is that any conflict will involve fighting in Russia or Ukraine. However Putin is another one who is itching to fire a nuclear bomb, so it wouldn't take much to provoke an attack. The after-effects are such that it would be better to just stand out in the street and prepare to meet your maker.

That really is the best advice. You only have to look at the devastation that the Hiroshima & Nagasaki bombs did. Compared to today's nuclear weapons they were all primitive, so what's the point of surviving?

So, to be clear, I am in no way pretending to be a Nuclear Engineer or Physicist, but there are different levels of a nuclear blast. One blast could destroy a city, one blast could destroy a state. If you want to quickly incinerate cities, states, etc., you may want to consider Thermonuclear or Hydrogen energy as your main source of power. It would depend on how many Kilotons you would want to produce as to which type of energy you would use. As an example; if you used several hundreds of Kilotons that would be equal to somewhere around a few million tons of TNT and while working for DuPont during my few years, I learned about the power of TNT.

I am going to research how much power Timothy McVeigh used in his bomb when he blew up the Federal building in Oklahoma City. You guys got me started on thinking about nuclear power and now I can’t stop researching. McVeigh’s bomb was equivalent to 5000 pounds of TNT and the blast could be felt 55 miles away.
