Can you use a rope to tie on the handle and then lower it. Like a pail of water.I did mange to get my hard shell case out and dropped down to the floor..not enough space for me to come through the hatch holding the case, so I have no option but to drop it and hop nothing breaks ..and fortunately nothing did ..but I really wanted to bring down the carry on case as well but it was just too much for me..
no the loft door is very heavy.. and it sits on a ledge which goes around the entrance, so it's impossible for the door to be pulled downwards, I have to physically push it up off the ledge and either turn it sideways and bring it through the gap and hand it down to someone.. or in the absence of anyone, it has to be pushed onto the attic floor, which blocks most of the standing room there is available when climbing up..Can you use a rope to tie on the handle and then lower it. Like a pail of water.
Adding that looks downright dangerous.
Holly, that is so scary!! The opening to my attic is much like that but is in the garage. I have stuff up there but alot of it are my husbands power tools. I don't have need for them but held onto them for the son. I do have a drill and hand tools on shelves in the garage. All the lawn care things are in the backyard shed. There is no way I am going up there. If I think of something I need down I wait for the son to come get it down. Maybe next time your daughter comes over she can go up and do an inventory and bring down things you might need occasionally.I went up into the loft today to get some cases down. I don't need them yet but I will at some point. It's very difficult to get into my loft much less try to bring anything down from there..... it's a tiny hatch which opens up into an attic space the same size as the house,
This is identical to the situation...except my hatch door doesn't drop down on a hinge , I have to teeter on the top of the ladders and push the very heavy hatch door up and over onto the attic floor..![]()
First I have to carry one set of ladders up stairs from the barn so I can stand on them to push open the hatch door, then I have to get the extending ladders to climb up, but when I get to the top, I have to grab onto the rafters and pull myself in.
It was never easy when I moved into this house.. and over the years my daughter would climb up there .. and then my husband who would then pass stuff down to me waiting at the bottom of the ladders, .. but now it's only me. ... and it's almost impossible to do with the OA in my knees and hands , and very dangerous.

@hollydolly I’m not sure if we’re talking about the same thing. I was suggesting the carryonCan you use a rope to tie on the handle and then lower it. Like a pail of water.
yes we are... I'm explaining that the door itself sits on a ledge around the rim inside the frame of the hatch door...so it would not be possible to attach a rope or a pole to pull the door down... it HAS to be pushed Upwards to get it open.it's not hinged in an way...@hollydolly I’m not sure if we’re talking about the same thing. handle be tied to a rope for lowering.
Ugh... this looks outright dangerous. I'm happy you safely retrieved what you needed but scared for you that you had to negotiate such a difficult arrangements. It's called a Push-up hatch... and this is what it says about it on the internet...
Push-up loft hatches consist of a separate door and frame. These operate by pushing the door up and out of the way revealing your loft entrance, however, these aren't advisable when using loft ladders.
It doesn't help the situation that my top hallway is similar to this.....so the ladders have very little space around them, and the stairs and bannister are right there below as well..![]()
Agreed. Holly, figure out every heavy, difficult, etc thing that you need done and pay someone to come in for a day. It’d be money well-spent if it keeps you safe. It would also save wear and tear on your body.@hollydolly You need a handyman. Like you don't already know that...
I’m surprised Sir hasn’t said it’s time to go to another grocery store chain that isn’t so hard on the employees. You could follow.Meaning that Sir has to be there at

Boy, that is difficult. Maybe next time someone comes to visit they could help at least get the luggage down. Would it be possible to replace the hatch with something lighter in material like a thin plywood?she can't really do it, Blessed, because after having her fingers sewn back on in her right hand she can't grip anything with that hand.. so altho' she has two working hands thanks to the skills of the Spanish Surgeons.. she's got serious arthritis in the repaired hand so she can't grip..![]()
My daughter has a bungalow, when she bought it last year one of the first things she did was to get the loft boarded out, lighting installed, and a pull down ladder installed.@hollydolly you becareful that looks so dangerous , I live in a bungalow and just stand on a chair to let my loft hatch down which is like in the photo, the part i dont like is letting the ladder down , it comes down so fast once its released it could take a finger off .
well yes it would be possible, but then it wouldn't be insulated like this one is... . The fact is, it's far too dangerous now unfortunately for me to go up there..now my knees are so painful, and I have to physically climb in there like a monkey.. at 68 tomorrow.. I should know when to call it a day before I get seriously injured.Boy, that is difficult. Maybe next time someone comes to visit they could help at least get the luggage down.
