What are you doing today 2023

Just a few chores, change the bed linens, some laundry. Find the okra and squash seeds I bought and get them in the ground. A trip to the neighborhood walmart, may pick up something special for dinner so I don't have to cook. Just feeling lazy once again!

I went up into the loft today to get some cases down. I don't need them yet but I will at some point. It's very difficult to get into my loft much less try to bring anything down from there..... it's a tiny hatch which opens up into an attic space the same size as the house,

This is identical to the situation...except my hatch door doesn't drop down on a hinge , I have to teeter on the top of the ladders and push the very heavy hatch door up and over onto the attic floor..
ladders.jpg

First I have to carry one set of ladders up stairs from the barn so I can stand on them to push open the hatch door, then I have to get the extending ladders to climb up, but when I get to the top, I have to grab onto the rafters and pull myself in.

It was never easy when I moved into this house.. and over the years my daughter would climb up there .. and then my husband who would then pass stuff down to me waiting at the bottom of the ladders, .. but now it's only me. ... and it's almost impossible to do with the OA in my knees and hands , and very dangerous.

I did mange to get my hard shell case out and dropped down to the floor..not enough space for me to come through the hatch holding the case, so I have no option but to drop it and hop nothing breaks ..and fortunately nothing did ..but I really wanted to bring down the carry on case as well but it was just too much for me..

Can you use a rope to tie on the handle and then lower it. Like a pail of water.

Adding that looks downright dangerous.

no the loft door is very heavy.. and it sits on a ledge which goes around the entrance, so it's impossible for the door to be pulled downwards, I have to physically push it up off the ledge and either turn it sideways and bring it through the gap and hand it down to someone.. or in the absence of anyone, it has to be pushed onto the attic floor, which blocks most of the standing room there is available when climbing up..

When the STBex was here he would climb up and hand the heavy door down to me... if it was dropped on the floor for example it would cause a great deal of damage, it's so heavy.

Holly, that is so scary!! The opening to my attic is much like that but is in the garage. I have stuff up there but alot of it are my husbands power tools. I don't have need for them but held onto them for the son. I do have a drill and hand tools on shelves in the garage. All the lawn care things are in the backyard shed. There is no way I am going up there. If I think of something I need down I wait for the son to come get it down. Maybe next time your daughter comes over she can go up and do an inventory and bring down things you might need occasionally.

@hollydolly I’m not sure if we’re talking about the same thing. I was suggesting the carryon
handle be tied to a rope for lowering.
yes we are... I'm explaining that the door itself sits on a ledge around the rim inside the frame of the hatch door...so it would not be possible to attach a rope or a pole to pull the door down... it HAS to be pushed Upwards to get it open.it's not hinged in an way...

like this...

It's called a Push-up hatch... and this is what it says about it on the internet...

Push-up loft hatches consist of a separate door and frame. These operate by pushing the door up and out of the way revealing your loft entrance, however, these aren't advisable when using loft ladders.

It doesn't help the situation that my top hallway is similar to this..

...so the ladders have very little space around them, and the stairs and bannister are right there below as well..

Ugh... this looks outright dangerous. I'm happy you safely retrieved what you needed but scared for you that you had to negotiate such a difficult arrangements.

@hollydolly you becareful that looks so dangerous , I live in a bungalow and just stand on a chair to let my loft hatch down which is like in the photo, the part i dont like is letting the ladder down , it comes down so fast once its released it could take a finger off .

@hollydolly You need a handyman. Like you don't already know that...

I spent the afternoon prepping new flowerbeds and planting gomphrena seeds. And weeding. If only the flowers would grow as well as the weeds do.

How warm was it? I broke out the straw gardening hat that DS gave me a couple of summers ago. So it was beyond warm; it was downright hot.

Tonight the family is getting together at a restaurant for yet another birthday dinner for DGD. I'm not going because the earliest reservation was for 7. I have to go to bed by 8...or 830 latest...in order to get up at 4.

It was a hard day at work. Again. I really need to find a way to only do six hours of work in six hours rather than eight hours in six hours. It's like squeezing 10 lbs of potatoes in a 5 lb sack and is really wearing me out.

Sir had yesterday off and spent it getting tooth pulled. He came by for a few minutes because he had to stop in the pharmacy for a prescription. He was so drugged up that he didn't make it in until after 10 this morning.

This is inventory weekend. Meaning that Sir has to be there at midnight tomorrow night and meaning that he might be at work in the morning for just a couple of hours. Or not. They usually finish inventory around 8am on Monday morning. Then Sir goes home because he's been up all night. And that means I work alone again

I'm off on Tuesday. It's not Tuesday yet.

Agreed. Holly, figure out every heavy, difficult, etc thing that you need done and pay someone to come in for a day. It’d be money well-spent if it keeps you safe. It would also save wear and tear on your body.

Meaning that Sir has to be there at
I’m surprised Sir hasn’t said it’s time to go to another grocery store chain that isn’t so hard on the employees. You could follow.

I agree, I need someone to come in and get the loft emptied tbh. ..and that's what I will do probably later this year. I'm going to call in a loft clearance company.. let them bring the stuff down, then I can sort out what they can take and what they can't. I pretty much know what's for keeping.. the rest of it up there belongs to the soon to be ex....mainly tools and car parts..

I have suitcases for 2 people up there, so clearly a set can go... but in the meantime, I'm pleased I managed to get this big hard shell one down today, without damaging it...

and I've left my carry-on case at the edge of the loft floor so basically when I open the door next time, I'll be able to just grab hold of it and slide it down the ladders without me having to climb into the loft..

However the only problem now will be that I'm going to have to find a home somewhere in the house to store the cases.. because I'm not going to keep them up there any more

@Jules Sir has so many years at the company that he really can't afford to leave. He's also got a lot of health problems that keep him there...they are very tolerant of the time spent tending to his many medical appointments and procedures. He gets paid as though he's at work.

I won't leave for another job because I just don't have it in me to learn a whole new job/job culture, etc. It's too much trouble.

This is a case of the devil I know is better than the devil I don't!

she can't really do it, Blessed, because after having her fingers sewn back on in her right hand she can't grip anything with that hand.. so altho' she has two working hands thanks to the skills of the Spanish Surgeons.. she's got serious arthritis in the repaired hand so she can't grip..:(

Boy, that is difficult. Maybe next time someone comes to visit they could help at least get the luggage down. Would it be possible to replace the hatch with something lighter in material like a thin plywood?

My daughter has a bungalow, when she bought it last year one of the first things she did was to get the loft boarded out, lighting installed, and a pull down ladder installed.

With mine that's not possible.. unfortunately...

The annoying thing is that for at least 2 years I'd been saying to my husband that he needed to go up and clear the loft out before we got too old to be able to do it.. and as they say, the rest is history!

Drat. It's still not Tuesday yet. I had to think about what day it is. Sunday. It's Sunday. Still have to go to work this morning and again tomorrow morning. Then it'll be Tuesday.

It's raining. Coffee tastes better on the patio, but I'm not going out in the rain to drink it out there.

well yes it would be possible, but then it wouldn't be insulated like this one is... . The fact is, it's far too dangerous now unfortunately for me to go up there..now my knees are so painful, and I have to physically climb in there like a monkey.. at 68 tomorrow.. I should know when to call it a day before I get seriously injured.

Add that to the fact that even when I get up there, one missed step and I could fall staright out of that hatch. With everything that's up there there's only about 3 feet of standing space around the hatch..

Beautiful bright morning, after a few days of dull and dreary, and cold, woke up to -5c.
With all the snow that has melted, the guys are getting their space in the back yard back…..will be some quality fetch going on out there today. 🌞🌞🌞.
Usual cleaning chores.
A showing of the house today at 2:00…..not my realtor…..a different one…..here, most realtors share listing……I would think a realtor who is not familiar with the house, may not be as knowledgeable as a persons’ own one.
Might get into more cupboards to clean…..maybe, or tomorrow.
