Newsweek reports United States is the 2nd most hated country in the world

I spent a lot of time traveling between the Marines and when I worked in the Pentagon. I have read here that other people have also visited a lot of countries. I only wanted to state that each time I spent days, weeks, months or years in other countries, it was always the best feeling when I got back on U.S. soil. I would imagine foreigners that were gone from their homeland for any length of time may have felt the same way when they returned to their country.

If I had to choose the worse country I was in for at least a month, it wouldn’t be all that difficult to list my top three countries. I think you need to spend at least a month to get a good feel of a country and to have an honest opinion of it. I remember the moment I stepped off the plane in Indonesia. I immediately thought I’m not going to like it here.

However, as it turned out, I enjoyed my time there. The attractions, food and things to do were all very good. We went scuba diving (Bali and Gili) and in some of the clearest waters I had ever been in. The only downside that I didn’t like were the many different species of reptiles, especially the Komodo Dragon, which is scary just looking at it.

We hired a guide to take us on a nature hike. Being there on U.S. Government work, I was permitted to carry a weapon. The guide carried a rifle. The beaches are beautiful and the food was very different, but good. We ate Mango right off the tree. The worse fruit is Durian. That fruit smells so bad, you aren’t allowed to eat it on the plane, but it does taste good, if you can get past the smell.

The first time I went to Japan was on business, I was helping to develop a car during early trials, pre-production. I was there for four weeks. At the end of the third week, I thought, For God's sake, get me out of here!

Four years later, I was back in Japan, this time for 5 weeks, again on business. If at the end of those five weeks, my employer had said to me, Sorry, you need to stay out there for another five weeks, I would have said, Bring it on! I was enjoying myself so much. Exploring in the evening and at weekends. Heading off to different cities on my time off using the Shinkansen, and booking into different hotels. Taking in the experience and mixing with the locals. When we go to a foreign country, it's what you make of the experience that counts. Best to leave preconceived thoughts and underdeveloped opinions at home.

The 2006 movie Amazing Grace depicts the struggle to abolish the slave trade by William Wilberforce in the English parliament. It was a very long and difficult struggle because the trade was very lucrative.

Worth viewing.

How come I'm not aware of this movie, I wonder. I sense an order placed on Amazon coming on.

Watching it now. It's on that newfangled YouingTube thingy. I should still order it on VH... I mean order it on BlueRay. Or StingRay or whatever.

My sister went on vacation a long time ago to Jamaica, and when she went to enjoy the beach, the hotel sent a guard with a rifle along to protect her. No thanks. USA has plenty of safe beaches, some with nude women.

Hubby and I went on a tour of PNG some years ago. It was not safe to wander about by ourselves and in one town we travelled in a minibus with heavy grills over every window. The company was called Guard Dog Tours and we had two armed guards with us in the bus. Sadly, no dog. I felt rather cheated. 😥

I'm shocked. SF thinks hatred for America is a healthy topic for our Seniors here? This topic has nothing to do with politics? Hmm:unsure:

This poor choice of thread topics is nothing but negative, divisive, and ugly for a "friendly" Senior Forum. We should be building each other up. Not tearing us down. Not sure how accurate it is either as people pour into our country for the "American Dream".

I agree that we are having some serious growing pains right now but just wait and see. Is the fake news media involved in this "World's Popular View" article?? I checked but we never know who's telling the truth right now, do we.

Although there were some members that hijacked the OP topic into controversial gun and medical issues, the topic didn't necessarily need to go there much less start debates on whatever. Wiser to state one's opinion, respond 2 or 3 times at most, reading others opinions, then move on, or take such off line with PMs so other members don't need to read emotional whatevers. Trying to make a debate out of posting issue disagreements as some personalities have a tendency to do has little value beyond satisfying trivial emotional urges. Want to talk politics, rant, flame, be emotional, and get worked up, go to a place like this:

Just done a "fact" check on Newsweek - you can check yourself but here's a few snippets

RIGHT-CENTER BIAS

These media sources are slight to moderately conservative in bias. They often publish factual information that utilizes loaded words (wording that attempts to influence an audience by appeals to emotion or stereotypes) to favor conservative causes. These sources are generally trustworthy for information but may require further investigation. See all Right-Center sources.
  • Overall, we rate Newsweek Right-Center Biased based on editorial positions that slightly favor the right. We also rate them as Mostly Factual in reported rather than high due to having to make corrections on false information after publication.

Better not.
My post asking this

I'm missing something. I wasn't aware that our country is being destroyed. Can you share why you think that?

was for a post by teacherterry that I didn't understand. I see people going to work everyday, shopping, laughing with their kids. Not something I think people in a country that allegedly is being destroyed will do.

To late? Maybe you can explain.

This part

"All Americans need to take action before it’s too late."

To late for what?

Obviously I don't share that perspective that is why I asked, hoping for a clarification of what those statements meant.

From the op's post.
Map shows world's most hated countries

go to the bottom to check out that particular assessment . IMO like most media headlines grab attention. That one surely did in order to generate almost 500 posts here.

Exactly and generated some in-fighting perhaps ; hot tempers and sabre rattling?? [joking of course!!]
Kind of entertaining how posters can get off topic, argue points not related to the op's post & in general just go at each other over something they have no control over.

emotions spill out - likes and dislikes emerge and we push aside the need to check the facts carefully? and off we go kickin the bag down the road!

Either you live in a cave or are purposely pretending to not know what is happening. Either way I don’t want to get this thread shutdown.

And....? For one thing it did not require a civil war to abolish slavery. It required grit and determination by a small group of committed parliamentarians and clergy to stop the English from profiteering from a very unholy business.

LMAO! Spare me your sanctimonious pride about the British, because it's truly misplaced. You claim the British didn’t need a civil war to end slavery as if that makes Britain morally superior while conveniently glossing over the fact that the British Empire didn’t end slavery out of moral enlightenment, but because they had already perfected the art of extracting wealth through other, equally brutal methods.

So, lets be realistic and recognize the fact that slavery didn’t end in the British Empire in 1833; it just evolved. After all, the British didn’t need plantation slavery when they could subjugate entire continents and bleed them dry under colonial rule. Take India, for example, during the Great Famine of 1876–78, over 26 million people starved to death because the British seized their grain and exported it.

So, I don't know about you, but that's not my idea of emancipation. In fact, where I come from we would call that "armed robbery". And let’s not pretend Britain abolished slavery across its empire in one swift, benevolent stroke.

Slavery continued in various forms in places like Mauritius and the Caribbean long after 1833, and indentured servitude, Britain’s polite rebranding of slavery, was rolled out to keep the imperial machine running. So before you start patting Britain on the back for “grit and determination,” take a hard look at what the Empire really meant.

Hence, CONQUEST, EXPLOITATION, STARVATION, and mass death on a scale that dwarfs the transatlantic slave trade. Bottom-line, you and your fellow members of the British Empire don’t get to wear halos just because your beloved empire swapped whips for famine and called it progress.

How can this thread be shut down if you explain what you think is happening?

Maybe an opinion about the border Is this good or bad in your opinion?
Daily border encounters have plunged 93%
In March 2025, illegal border crossings at the southwest border between ports of entry saw a significant decrease, with 7,181 apprehensions. This represents a 14% drop from February 2025 and a massive 95% decrease from March 2024.

I'm not so foolish as to believe prices won't rise. Do you think the expected drop in the price of diesel fuel & gasoline is going to be good or bad.

Diesel fuel retail prices per month in the U.S. 2020-2025
Published by Statista Research Department, Apr 11, 2025
In March 2025, one gallon of diesel cost an average of 3.59 U.S. dollars in the United States. That was a decrease compared to the month prior, which had seen prices rise to 3.68 U.S. dollars per gallon.

In our January Short-Term Energy Outlook, we now forecast U.S. retail gasoline prices through the end of 2026. We estimate U.S. average gasoline prices in 2025 will decrease by 11 cents per gallon (gal), or about 3%, compared with 2024. In 2026, we forecast a further decrease of about 18 cents/gal, or an additional 6%.

Food prices expected to rise but at a slower rate than the historical average.
Yes, USDA Economic Research Service forecasts that overall food prices are expected to rise in 2025, although at a slightly slower rate than the historical average. Specifically, they predict an increase of 3.4% in 2025, compared to a 20-year average of 2.9%, according to FarmWeekNow.
