Newsweek reports United States is the 2nd most hated country in the world

..... people don’t deserve abuse from us because of some click bait article in a magazine.
No one deserves it, probably. My guess is that 99% of "this will shock you" - "must read" - "instant karma" - "the point at which he/she realizes" are all click bait videos, news reports, and magazines.

Here it is again the myth that people everywhere are jealous of the US and think it is the greatest country on earth.

I'm not sure where the people surveyed were from - or the methodology of the survey - but, no , most people in other countries do not think US is greatest place or are jealous of your version of freedom or want to move there.
Calling other countries backwards just perpetuates myth of ugly americans though

News here shows various people protesting about various things - that is what happens in democracies where peaceful protests are legal.
Yes! protests are legal but like I said they are nearly all organized by socialist and communist organizations. They are eagerly covered by the major news media and I don’t think that it is just because it is big news every time a handful of people march around carrying signs.
Maybe less than a year ago I started searching for who organized these protest marches in Chicago and it wasn’t hard to find out.
You can support that as a worthy cause if you want.
What I see is a bunch of socialists and communists trying to recruit more members.

It looks like he may have purchased significantly more land. Eleven more entries here for a "BOUNDS, JAMES R". Although some may have been relatives with same name, or similar. Maybe even land in a similar with business partners? The link in the 'Accession' column will show the location. Then click on the white box under where it says 'Map', near the upper left of the map itself. Looks like he had quite a business going -- passed down to other family members, along with later purchases of land:

The James R. Bounds mentioned in 1888 was most likely James Rousom Bounds Jr. because his father had died 20 years earlier in 1868.

I don't agree with that at all. There have been protests by right wing groups, left wing groups, non political groups about huge variety of issues.

I'm not sure what you are saying I can support as a worthy cause - I support the cause of some protests and not others.

to GP44 - the protests here I mean on this site are unfortunately governed by a "no direct political person or party criticism" you do follow that I assume? So I think I can make a few cursory comments about govt decisions and movements [can we?] but not level my discussion and criticism at any one party /or person ? - yes I realize that is not democratic but for further clarification you will need to take this up with the owner?? So with all due respect as long as you realize you are walking through a minefield as the dear Princess Dianna once did - best of luck??

Or are they organised by disaffected people who are generally only labelled as socialist or communist.
After all one of the biggest cop outs is too simply label and denounce without actually debating the matter at hand.

Your comment brought back some memories. Very 1970s:

Yep. That's where I first heard the phrase.

I won't respond to any media that uses the word "slammed" in a headline.

there's a phrase that keeps repeating in my mind lately - wonder whether that suits the occasion now "..........too much and never enough...............?????

Ancestor lineage? Ok, never woulda guessed that plot twist.

Well, I thought if you can't beat 'em, join 'em.

Did you miss the Dick Emery comedy show video for @Warrigal . Many posters here are just awful, but we like 'em. Well, most of 'em.

If the Dalai Lama ever comes ba...?? ...I mean if @Dave03 ever comes back to this thread for his periodic check in, even he won't recognise the place.

Most Hated Country 2025

2nd place United States

United States

While this country’s appearance on the “most hated” list may surprise many Americans, few Asians or Europeans will bat an eyelash. As with China and Russia, a major cause of the animosity directed toward the US is the country’s tendency to overstep when trying to influence international events in a way that benefits the US.

The US frequently sends troops into other countries (Vietnam, Panama, Afghanistan, Iraq etc.) for reasons that are often criticized by people in other countries. It has also been known to throw its weight around politically, and what seems like leadership to the US and its allies can look like oppression or bullying to people in other countries—particularly if that leadership involves supporting questionable regimes in oil-rich countries.

US culture is also occasionally ridiculed for various reasons:

  • Deep and increasingly hostile political division between liberals and conservatives
  • Americans’ willingness to place full faith in clearly biased media sources or politicians
  • A perception that Americans tend to assume America is the world leader in most every category
  • The country’s slow and fumbled response to the COVID-19 pandemic
  • Americans’ love of firearms and fast food
  • The country’s lack of progress (and sometimes regression) in areas such as support for LGBTQ+ people, the environment, race and gender issues, gun regulation, income inequality, health care, and democratic government
    • A perceived sense of entitlement among Americans

Read the article to understand the context.

We're past that. Catch up. It's now about our genealogy.

I don't and I won't.
Obfuscation, defensiveness and distraction, but not fun.
To be fair, you don't have to participate if you are 'above' the silliness. America has been sufficiently beat up for 29 pages now. All these things people find wrong with the country. Many of the topics listed in the opinion piece from Newsweek have been discussed. To death. A little humor and side tracking never hurt anyone.

Ironic, your quote in the signature line..... "People without a sense of humour should not be allowed to decide what people with a sense of humour are allowed to laugh at. It would be like allowing colour-blind people to decide which colours should be on a colour chart." J.C." :ROFLMAO:

But you have to admit... it's been fun.

I mean, c'mon! A discussion thread that covers the Civil War, hand written checks, and cowbells?

THAT'S entertainment.

Significantly more than that though. What was the thread about again?:

Ancestry and heritage -- (You are welcome. It turns out we’re all related to someone famous... or at least someone with a goat and land)
Eggs -- (Sunny side up debates, hard-boiled opinions) ok, maybe not eggs. But I think it came close.
Cats -- (Because cats have a geopolitical stance too. I think that might have been me?)
Comedy shows -- (Serious topic? -- insert sitcom reference!)
Movies -- (Saving Private Discussion Thread?)
Cows and cattle farming -- (Will have to come back to this one, as this subject escapes me)
General media distrust -- (We all have trust issues, apparently)
Food prices and inflation -- (Eggflation: coming to a grocery store near you. But not quite, as I pointed out above)
Weather and natural disasters -- (It's raining opinions, hallelujah! Who can remember the song?)
My country is bigger than yours -- (Nah Nah Ha Nah Naaah... Size matters... apparently. Let's not go there again)
If it wasn’t for us, you’d be speaking another language -- (insert your language of choice).
Personal travel experiences -- (And how to annoy locals in 10 different countries)
Healthcare costs in the U.S. -- (An arm, a leg... and probably your soul too. Depending on which country you come from)
Conspiracy theories about governments -- (Tinfoil hats selling out fast!)
Homelessness in America -- (A somewhat sobering moment among the chaos of the thread)
Military veterans and VA issues -- (Thank you for your service. A phrase that annoys some veterans)
Global population migration -- (Everybody's moving...)
Farming practices in different countries -- (That page where we all got together and had a global barn dance)
Social media influence -- (Arguing about politics with strangers?)
Gun ownership debates -- (Lock, Stock, And Two Smoking Barrels. Funny movie)
Colonialism and European history -- (Because apparently, everything started going wrong in 1492, or was it 1776?)
Different education systems (U.S. vs Europe) -- (Two nations divided by a common language... and an uncommon education system)
Drug addiction and the opioid crisis -- (Hummm?)
Celebrities voicing political opinions -- (Because nothing says policy expertise like a platinum album!)
U.S. constitutional rights (especially free speech) -- (Say anything... and brace yourself for the comeback)
Moral decline and 'fall of empires' -- (Rome fell, but not this thread, ever! You are stuck here till eternity. Only the clever people managed to get out.)
Age of Empires -- (Oh, no, I got that wrong. It was a computer game I was into in the 1990s)
The role of religion in society -- (Some deep thoughts squeezed between cowbells and movie quotes. I think?)
Personal rants about laziness and 'youth these days' -- (They don't know they are born today. Back in my day, we walked uphill to forums... both ways! And we were made to lick the road clean along the way. Monty Python sketch, I think?)
National pride vs globalism -- (Wave that flag... preferably the correct way up)
Censorship online and the 'cancel culture' -- (I don't waste my Sundays. The end!)

Bring on the dancing girls, then after we can issue the prizes for:
* "The Best Tanjent Award".
* "Most Unexpected Twist in a Discussion Award". (@Dave03 has the evolope with the shortlist for that one).
* Best Use of a "Movie Reference Award".
* And my favorite, "But We Have already Gone Over This on Page 8, 15, & Page 21 Award"

Talk about changing the subject. That is incredible. You'd think people were being defensive, and don't want to face how our image in the US is bad now.

Well see here's the thing, Dennis. A few weeks ago, a thread was started (and of course, shouldn't have been and was horrible!) bashing Canada and it disappeared in about a day (as it should have.) This one about hating America is going on and on... so I think it's a good thing to have the subject changes. You really would rather see nearly 30 pages of people from within and outside of your own country discussing hatred of the United States?!?

I think most of us already know how any given member feels about the subject now without stirring it up again. That's why I did the Barney Fife pot stirring picture. Why fan the flames again?
