Acts of Kindness

I was just looking at Readers Digest and a cover story was random acts of kindness. Nice topic for a thread, especially with the holidays. There was one day several years ago. I had an old car. I took the kids for a doctors appointment and when we came out of the office it was raining buckets. I had three young kids with me and as the oldest closed the passenger door it popped open again. For some reason the latch refused to snap. Pouring rain and I didn't even have a bungee cord to hold it shut.

Out of nowhere a truck parked beside us. A young man with long hair and a beard tapped on our window. The kids jumped in the back seat. He asked if we needed help and then rummaged in his truck for tools. He got in the passenger seat and had the door fixed quickly. I thanked him all over the place as he got out. Then as suddenly as he appeared he was gone. We're not a way spiritual family, but joked for years afterwards that Jesus came and fixed the door.

Great story, Fur! :)

I had driven from NY to FL in an old British Triumph TR-6 sports car, a tiny little 2-seater convertible that was about as reliable as a broken clock. Somehow I made it to Florida and, being the wise-ass that I am, decided to drive on the beach.

Of course, I got stuck in the sand half-way. I'm gunning the motor, the car is overheating and I'm just burying myself deeper.

At the point of despair a big ol' pick-up truck pulls up next to me, loaded with a bunch of refugees from Deliverance. They were packed into the cab as well as the bed of the truck, had about 5 teeth between them and were actually drinking out of jugs.

I figure this was my last day on earth. They would beat me and humiliate me and use my bones for dice and ...

They asked if I needed help, hooked up my car, towed me back to civilization and a garage, gave me a few sips from that jug (WHOA!) and had me over their place for dinner while the car was repaired.

You just never know. I couldn't thank them enough but they just took it as part of life.
