Controversial Threads-Topics

So, how bold, or smart, can you be when it comes to doing a controversial topic? Bold, meaning doing it and Smart, meaning not.

Depends on the topic, or how energetic I feel

I usually let someone else start one, then say what I think...so smothered in snide cynical jest, nobody knows whether or not I'm serious

seriously

Banning politics is the best thing that ever happened to SF. There never was any real debate about things, just a lot of trading insults with "your mama" and "No, your sister" type posts.

Out of curiosity, how does a person know when they are doing a controversial Thread...……..when they start seeing negative posts about them?

Usually more simple than that.

See my comment about my my Diana posts.

You can bet your sweet life about involvement in Syria, the futility of Vietnam, your gun laws capital punishment, legalising weed and all manner of things will be instantly controversial.

IMO the controversy starts when people are not willing to accept another person's point of view/opinion.

I'm not suggesting that they have to agree, simply accept it and move on.

I usually get frustrated when I can't seem to make another person understand what I'm trying to say.

If they understand the point I'm making and don't agree that is fine with me.

Politics is always controversal.

Not to speak of the FACT that we have no control over what they want to do that affects us why argue over it.

G.C. : its a club and you ain't in it".

Anyone who wants to get into politics there is plenty forums like ' Political Forum ' USMessage board, etc, etc, etc,.

I come here to learn about being a senior .

However! Let's be honest about this, when you get together with family or friends, do you never discuss anything political?

Maybe you don't, especially if you are in vehement disagreement about the subject, and one or more of you is known to have a short fuse. I can imagine that there are situations in real life where politics, religion, gender issues, etc.
are off limits, because they will inevitably lead to fights. And discussions in those circumstances usually are pretty bland and boring. (I mean, how long can you talk about the weather?)

But if people are reasonably intelligent and mature, there is nothing wrong with exchanging various points of view. Even if nobody ever changes anyone else's mind, discussing things helps us learn and sometimes helps us clarify our own thoughts.

What gets annoying to me is when people keep repeating the same old same old, to a degree that they are totally predictable. But I still don't think they should be banned from doing so. If they are beginning to sound like a broken record
(remember those?), others will tell them so in short order.

Saying that you never discuss religion or politics means you want to limit conversation to just exchanging dull platitudes for the most part. There are some exceptions, such as favorite movies or TV shows, but we have separate topics for those things. A topic called "General topics, or Hot Topics" is inviting all sorts of topics. And absoutely anything can be controversial.

I believe everyone has the right to their opinion on all things. Sadly talking Politics a lot of people don't want to hear someone's opposing view than theirs. I was always interested in what other people thought about some issues, but Politics is different. Some people lean toward whatever their party is doing is right. They can't see the truth in something if it is against their Party. I have always believed that each party does wrong things at times. It is truly a shame that people can't agree on some issues.

I’m glad there is a rule of ‘no politics.’ I know that there have been topics where I’ve taken other members passionate political opinions far too personally and have elevated the discussion to a heated debate. Some people might be mature enough but I’m not one of them.

If people agree on everything then life would be ultra boring.

Sorry Sunny but-

"Saying that you never discuss religion or politics means you want to limit conversation to just exchanging dull platitudes for the most part." I disagree.

There's a world full of topics, science, space, music, the arts and literature, family dynamics, other cultures news items, especially humor, etc....

Neither am I. In fact I've been banned from three political forums already and if politics were allowed here I have no doubt it would be four in short order.

When it comes to Politics I am always "Ready to Rumble!"

I know I shouldn’t laugh but I can’t help myself. :lofl:
Thats funny. I think most people can get set off when they get passionate about something or become over - invested in certain topics. You would think all that extra blood flowing to the brain would be a good thing but results prove otherwise.
