Great Quote - Albert Einstein

I just thought about this the other day. With so much potential conflict in the air, the police are going to be trying to keep the peace. I thought about how important that we have police to risk life and limb to keep us safe and we need to support them...especially emotionally if not with any donations we can afford.

How can you know who/what is evil? When evil is portrayed as good, and good is portrayed as evil?
Good and evil both reside in all of us and instinctively we know the difference but evil has great appeal. Just look at the kind of movies we like to watch. Note how much we are fascinated by famous people who behave badly towards others (Johnny Depp and Amber Heard defamation trial for example). We know what we are seeing and hearing but nevertheless we cannot get enough of it.

When we see/hear/sense evil we need to name it and turn away. Similarly, when we see/hear/sense goodness we need to acknowledge it and try to do likewise. Always, it begins with ourselves, and our personal decisions. It is always our choice which wolf we feed.

Two Wolves – A Cherokee Parable

An old Cherokee chief was teaching his grandson about life…

“A fight is going on inside me,” he said to the boy.
“It is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves.

“One is evil – he is fear, anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, self-doubt, and ego.

“The other is good – he is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith.

“This same fight is going on inside you – and inside every other person, too.”

The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather,
“Which wolf will win?”

The old chief simply replied,
“The one you feed.”

That is why we have police ..... to battle evil . And what happens when they do ? .... Many folks question their means & methods. I can't imagine the world without the police . And we might just be headed that way.
Yes, we just can't imagine police standing around for over an hour, doing nothing while children are being killed.
And why haven't you started a "Free Derek Chauvin" petition?

A long time ago I read a book by Grahame Greene called Brighton Rock. It was a text we studied at Teachers College. In this book Greene uses to characters to embody the spiritual values of good and evil and the secular values of right and wrong. The police have no business enforcing spiritual values. They exist to enforce laws that support the right and counter what is wrong.

The controversy surrounding abortion laws is an example of laws being passed that are about spiritual values. The counter arguments are about whether the laws are wrong because of the effect that they have on individual women and girls. Rights are a secular concept.

But do we know the difference? Is a man who enters Walgreens with a duffle bag which he fills with merchandise and walks out without paying evil? A DA might say he is an innocent victim. Evil can be a very subjective thing in our 21st century society.

I guess not, but across the Bay from here in San Francisco county ...
"This week, they recalled District Attorney Chesa (“I prosecute nobody”) Boudin, on whose watch the city’s crime rate skyrocketed and clusters of predatory “homeless” proliferated."

That's like blaming the police for the increase in crime. The broken system is what causes crime rates to rise and people to become homeless. We need to make the system more equitable for all instead of just to benefit the rich. Only then will crime rates get back under control.

A thief is not necessarily an evil person. Stealing is wrong, not intrinsically evil. It is against the law to steal but it is not the same as entering a classroom to randomly shoot down students and teachers. Even during a war that is still evil.

"The world is a dangerous place to live; not because of the people who are evil, but because of the people who don't do anything about it."
Most of the world is evil. Even valiant efforts by those doing something about it cannot change that.

In my book stealing and murder are both evil, but that does not mean that I must somehow equate the two. I do not, and neither does our legal system. What specifically does that have to do with this discussion?
