Good and evil both reside in all of us and instinctively we know the difference but evil has great appeal. Just look at the kind of movies we like to watch. Note how much we are fascinated by famous people who behave badly towards others (Johnny Depp and Amber Heard defamation trial for example). We know what we are seeing and hearing but nevertheless we cannot get enough of it.How can you know who/what is evil? When evil is portrayed as good, and good is portrayed as evil?
Two Wolves – A Cherokee Parable
An old Cherokee chief was teaching his grandson about life…
“A fight is going on inside me,” he said to the boy.
“It is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves.
“One is evil – he is fear, anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, self-doubt, and ego.
“The other is good – he is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith.
“This same fight is going on inside you – and inside every other person, too.”
The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather,
“Which wolf will win?”
The old chief simply replied,
“The one you feed.”
Yes, we just can't imagine police standing around for over an hour, doing nothing while children are being killed. That is why we have police ..... to battle evil . And what happens when they do ? .... Many folks question their means & methods. I can't imagine the world without the police . And we might just be headed that way.
A long time ago I read a book by Grahame Greene called Brighton Rock. It was a text we studied at Teachers College. In this book Greene uses to characters to embody the spiritual values of good and evil and the secular values of right and wrong. The police have no business enforcing spiritual values. They exist to enforce laws that support the right and counter what is wrong. That is why we have police ..... to battle evil . And what happens when they do ? .... Many folks question their means & methods. I can't imagine the world without the police . And we might just be headed that way.
I would add: Imagination is Better with Education.Imagination Is Better Than Education.
It's getting more difficult to sort out, but common sense and a good upbringing are a big plus. How can you know who/what is evil? When evil is portrayed as good, and good is portrayed as evil?
But do we know the difference? Is a man who enters Walgreens with a duffle bag which he fills with merchandise and walks out without paying evil? A DA might say he is an innocent victim. Evil can be a very subjective thing in our 21st century society.Good and evil both reside in all of us and instinctively we know the difference
? ...not in this county. But do we know the difference? Is a man who enters Walgreens with a duffle bag which he fills with merchandise and walks out without paying evil? A DA might say he is an innocent victim.
Einstein was speaking of the Third Reich, etc.Evil can be a very subjective thing in our 21st century society.
And I was speaking of the crime wave engulfing many of our large cities and a reluctance on the part of some law enforcement officials to recognize it as crime and evil and penalize the wrong doers.Einstein was speaking of the Third Reich, etc.
Einstein was applauding the fervor of Pablo Casals and his steadfast opposition of Franco's rise to power in Spain.Einstein was speaking of the Third Reich, etc.
I guess not, but across the Bay from here in San Francisco county ...? ...not in this county.
I forgot to add this... There is a translation of the original note. https://falschzitate.blogspot.com/2018/04/die-welt-wird-nicht-bedroht-von-den.htmlThank you @Harry Le Hermit.
Amen to that!"The world is a dangerous place to live; not because of the people who are evil, but because of the people who don't do anything about it."
That's like blaming the police for the increase in crime. The broken system is what causes crime rates to rise and people to become homeless. We need to make the system more equitable for all instead of just to benefit the rich. Only then will crime rates get back under control.I guess not, but across the Bay from here in San Francisco county ...
"This week, they recalled District Attorney Chesa (“I prosecute nobody”) Boudin, on whose watch the city’s crime rate skyrocketed and clusters of predatory “homeless” proliferated."

A thief is not necessarily an evil person. Stealing is wrong, not intrinsically evil. It is against the law to steal but it is not the same as entering a classroom to randomly shoot down students and teachers. Even during a war that is still evil. But do we know the difference? Is a man who enters Walgreens with a duffle bag which he fills with merchandise and walks out without paying evil? A DA might say he is an innocent victim. Most of the world is evil. Even valiant efforts by those doing something about it cannot change that."The world is a dangerous place to live; not because of the people who are evil, but because of the people who don't do anything about it."
In my book stealing and murder are both evil, but that does not mean that I must somehow equate the two. I do not, and neither does our legal system. What specifically does that have to do with this discussion?A thief is not necessarily an evil person. Stealing is wrong, not intrinsically evil. It is against the law to steal but it is not the same as entering a classroom to randomly shoot down students and teachers. Even during a war that is still evil.
