I mostly had marathon Christmas baking and cleanup in mind when insisting on a farmhouse sink when we remodeled. While it has worked out beautifully on that front, it has the unexpected bonus of being a back and knee saver when bathing infant & toddler grandchildren when they've spent the night, and dogs between groomings.

TGS will be 3 in December and still has plenty of room. By the time he outgrows the sink he'll only need supervision rather than hands-on cleaning in a tub or shower.

Yes, my cake came out fine, thanks. I put a pkg of vanilla pudding in it. Trouble is, I've been eating a piece or 2 every day. I just ate one now. I'll have to either freeze the rest or toss it; sick of it now.
 
Well, I start my preparation today for a colonoscopy tomorrow. This is certainly my idea of fun, and the idea that you don't have to do this after the age of 80 is not completely accurate. It all depends on your medical history and LOL, I am not lucky. My understanding is that the stuff you have to drink has not gotten one bit tastier.

I expect to be fairly miserable until Tuesday the 17th of Sept.

I had to have the central heating on for an hour tonight, the first time since last winter. It really got quite chilly all of a sudden, despite me wearing jogging pants and a wool cardi... so I had to put it on. Fortunately for my finances the house is well insulated so it only takes a short time to feel very warm...


Finally pinned the plasterer down who is still to make good my kitchen wall. It's not one plasterer it's a company and they've had real probs with the 2 plasterers they employ, one had to have emergency sick leave.. and then the other electrocuted himself last week.. however they've got someone else, and he will be coming at the start of next week..

Sorry to hear that you need surgery but, good that it is being done soon. I hope the recovery time isn't too long 🤗 If you see any big, baggy t-shirts going cheap, consider buying some as they are great for after surgery and, when you are recovered, you can chuck them in the rag bag :)

Moving from a big house to a flat will be a big change but, I think you are right to consider it. A flat will mean less work and maintenance and more time to just enjoy life. Good luck with the viewing. :)

If the hospital offers you help, take the contact details. Even if you don't want the help, it is useful to have just in case. They will pick up shopping for you, prescriptions or anything else which you may need while you are recovering. One of mum's neighbours had surgery last year and the local team used to run errands and take her to hospital appointments while she recovered. I think they were called the home resettlement team or something similar.

We ended up going to my Mom's church picnic after all. I'm stuffed!!! Just roll me into the house! I won't need to eat again for a week! Everything was very good!

Mom and her friend got there early and were able to get a table (with 4 chairs!) under a tent. The weather was a bit chilly, with on and off mist. Since we were under the tent, it was actually a pretty nice time.

The one thing that they didn't have at the picnic was coffee. After all of the food we ate, Dio and I both feel like falling asleep. Even though it's a bit late in the day, we're having coffee now. Heavier rain is a few miles away. We got home just in time!

Good idea about the T shirts.. I have some already so I'll get them out nearer the time and make them available for me.. I might take one with me to the hospital to come home in...

Yes the change to a flat from this house will be Mega.. I keep doubting that I want to go, I wonder how I'll cope without having my own personal outside space.. how I'll cope with having strangers share the same address.. people living above me..
All the added extras that my husband made to this house to make it more comfortable to live.. all new electrics and sockets for example.. to name just one ....insulation.. brick walls ( the flat has cavity walls)..

My big barn and workbench and tools..

I thin about the fact I have 3 ways to enter or leave my house.. and that I will have to share one common entrance with other people..

All my neighbours who I've known for 45 years..

.. it's my Daughter who reminds me that I have OA in several areas of my body now.. already there's things I find difficult to do using my hands.... How difficult it's beginning to get climbing stairs, not to mention painful at times , and I;m due for knee surgery..got an appointment this week with the Consultant.. ..

How these things are likely to get worse in the coming years and make it more difficult to manage or even move home in 5 or 10 years...

At the moment i;m relatively fit.. but will I be in a few years..?.. it's already a bit of a trial trying to hold the heavy hedge and tree trimmers.. and I had to pay someone last month to cut trees etc..

Can I manage in an urban cosmopolitan area when I'm used to fields woodland and farmland ?

Then there's the social aspect.. there's nothing to do here for older people.. nothing !.. so before long I could be completely cut off from anything...

So.. we'll see.. I won;t know until I really look at this apartment ...

@hollydolly Are you familiar with the Golden Girls TV series in the US? They were four older ladies and the very old mother of one of them who all lived together in a big house...a house all on one level.

How about you and I start a Golden Girls household? (I want to run away from home.) All we'd need to do is find one or two others to move in. With three or four of us, we could even afford to heat it! How many bedrooms do you have? How many bathrooms? We could all live together in your big house if we have one of those stairlift chairs installed.
 
LOL... I know Golden Girls very well... I luv that show..I could watch that over and over... one of the all time great comedies...

Did you know that a stair lift takes so long to get to the top, you'd have peed yerself by the time you got to the loo... :ROFLMAO:..however if we find 2 rich biddies to come and live here we could install another bathroom downstairs

I've got 5 rooms.. and just one and a half baths ...so if you've got any rich friends..or any rich gals on here..then invite them to come and live in my house.. and if there's any guys out there who are very handy with tools.. they can come and live in the barn... :D

@hollydolly If your neighbor and his wife are splitting the blanket, maybe they'll both move. Old dudes with tools can move in there and be the Golden Boys.

Friends? I don't have any. They either died or live 1200-1500 miles away.

How about a bigger flat in the city with outdoor space? No stairs. That's why it's called a flat. No worry about peeing oneself before getting to the loo. Maybe only need one other old lady to share.

You gotta hurry up and make up your mind, though. At my age, there's no time to waste, and besides, I'm running away from here as soon as I can figure out where to go.

I always bring coffee in a thermal mug. Sounds like otherwise it was great! Love potlucks.
 
@hollydolly I don't know if you will have a drain after the surgery but, if you do, a lightweight cross body bag is good to put the bottle in, otherwise it is too easy to forget and the drain goes flying across the room! You will probably be given cream if you need it but, once it starts healing, an unscented emollient is good, something like E45 or Aveeno. I had surgery, quite a while ago now, and I still use E45 cream, it's really good and inexpensive.

A garden flat would probably be a good option for you although, they are probably harder to find. You are wise to think of the future and make the hard decisions now though. Hopefully you are not in too much of a rush so won't feel rushed to make a decision now. The move would obviously be much easier if you found somewhere you really loved and could imagine living. When is your viewing?

Do any of your friends live in areas which you like?

well this flat I'm going to look at is on the ground floor, and has 2 bathrooms... only 2 bedrooms tho' but we could put a big reclining sofa in the livinroom for another rent payer...

Naaa next doors' a no go, she's back... so the brass Ball boy will have to live in the underground garage... ...:D

Actually, I read about a group of ladies who did just that but, what wasn't clear is what happened if one of them decides to move out or dies.

I doubt that I'll be given a drain.. but thanks for the advice anyway.. I already use Aveeno moisturiser so that's handy to have to use on any scarring.. and I have a big bottle of E45 Cream with a pump which I use for my hands..

The flat I'm probably viewing this week...is a ground floor with a garden..of sorts..it's kind of an enclosed open space, which conjures up a picture of a communal garden, but it's not like that.. even tho' it technically is.. but the flat face out into the garden, while the other flats face out onto the road.

My friends live here.. or in London and Spain.. but the friends in London live in the city, I can't afford anything in the city, and I don't want to live there anyway ... I'm looking at this apartment in the suburbs..

The flats is ideal.. in that it's in a very upmarket area.. very little crime.. and within walking distance of 2 major rail/underground stations and within 5 minute drive of 2 others...

Equally the walk to the major high street with all the amenities is just 5 minutes...

There's a large park very close to the apartments, and a library within a minutes walk...
 
@hollydolly Nix to anybody sleeping in the living room...too limiting to using the room. Is there a reason why it has to be that particular flat? Can't we look at others?

Maybe I can't run away after all. At least there's a door between my place and theirs.

Nobody gets to move unless it's to the bone yard. If that happens, well, we just recruit another one.
 
I spent quite a bit of time fiddling with the Roku remote this morning. It just stopped working. I tried tapping it on the table, which sometimes worked. I changed the batteries, but that wasn't it. I also downloaded the Roku remote app on my phone. The app didn't recognize this Roku but it used to work with the Roku I had before (years ago). Finally I decided to try rebooting the Roku and that worked (with the batteries that were in it before). It's no fun when our devices aren't working properly. 😒

Oh, no....this was not a Pot Luck. My Mom's church supplied all of the food! Chicken, hot dogs, corn on the cob, potato salad, baked beans, mac & cheese, tacos, watermelon, grapes, pineapple, and....well, that's all I remember for now.

The desert table was filled with home made cookies, etc.

There were also games, like a cake walk, BINGO, and raffles!!

Even with the less than perfect weather, we all had a nice time!
 
Weather looks pretty good today, so it will probably be a bit more work tidying up the garden. We want to get the campervan cleaned and packed as we're having a coupe of days away to visit another couple of castles and museums.

Mrs. L and I have often thought about this house which we love in spite of its quirks, but will it become too much to manage in the coming years.
I'm not sure if the layout would allow for alterations to make things easier, but for the time being, we'll struggle on.
