King Charles III, a life of service

Royal Family Family Shares Striking Photo of King Charles and Sister Princess Anne for Her 73rd Birthday

"In honor of his sister Princess Anne’s 73rd birthday, King Charles, 74, shared two striking photos for royal admirers to enjoy."

"Just a few hours ago, the royal family posted not one, but two pictures of the monarch and his little sister on her special day on the official royal family Instagram account. The first picture was taken on the day of the king’s coronation ceremony earlier this year, and the brother-sister duo can be seen sharing a laugh while standing inside Buckingham Palace in their royal attire."

"But, the pics didn’t stop there. The royals also shared an extremely rare photo of the siblings as young royals, which was snapped at Clarence House in July 1951. In the black-and-white portrait, a much smaller Charles is holding his sister’s hand while they are both sitting in bassinets. And from the throwback photo, it’s apparent the pair had a close-knit bond even back then."

The caption read: “Wishing Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal a very Happy Birthday today!”

Carbuncles and King Charles: was the royal family’s meddling supertroll right about architecture?
28 September, 2022

"The prince relished his position as the high priest of taste. He gleefully scolded the royally chartered professions of architecture and town planning for creating “godforsaken cities” littered with “huge, blank and impersonal” buildings. His words were carefully tuned to grab headlines."

"Birmingham city centre was damned as “a monstrous concrete maze,” with a library that looked like “a place where books are incinerated, not kept”. The brutalist National Theatre on the South Bank was “a clever way of building a nuclear power station in the middle of London”. The British Library looked “more like the assembly hall of an academy for secret police”."

"Like an accomplished shitposting troll, the prince knew how to rile his targets. He had tested his strategy a few years earlier, in an address to the Royal Institute of British Architects, on the occasion of its 150th birthday."

"Styling himself as a defender of popular opinion, he chided the audience for “ignoring the feelings and wishes of the mass of ordinary people in this country,” and famously damned a proposed glass and steel extension to the National Gallery as “a monstrous carbuncle on the face of a much-loved and elegant friend,” nixing the scheme in the process. Four decades on, the c-word continues to be hurled by outraged local residents at everything from luxury flats in York to a station revamp in Lowestoft."

King Charles dons new tartan for Highland games

"Peter Fraser, president of the Braemar Royal Highland Society said: "A new king, it's very special. It's great that the Royal Family has carried on this tradition. All the Royal family take a great interest in the games, there's no question about that."

"The King arrived at Balmoral Castle last month for his first summer residence in Scotland since the death of Queen Elizabeth. He is expected to be there on the first anniversary of the Queen's death on 8 September."

"The Scottish Tartans Authority said the design of the King's kilt was based on the Balmoral tartan sett which dates from 1850. The new tartan has been registered with the Scottish register of tartans, which is administered by the National Records of Scotland."

King Charles III has made an emotional stop in front of Paris' fire-damaged Notre Dame cathedral on the second day of his state visit to France

PARIS -- PARIS (AP) — King Charles III went from a meeting with young athletes in a working-class, multicultural suburb of Paris to an emotional stop in front of the fire-damaged Notre Dame Cathedral on Thursday, the second day of his state visit to France.

Earlier, Charles made an address to lawmakers at the Senate, praising France and the United Kingdom's “indispensable relationship” and its capacity to meet the world's challenges, including Russia's war in Ukraine and climate change.

Charles and Queen Camilla, accompanied by French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife, Brigitte, paid much attention to a presentation about ongoing renovation work at Notre Dame, one day after the king said he had been “utterly appalled by the scenes of such devastation following the catastrophic fire” in April 2019.

Residents said the royal visit to Saint-Denis was a welcome boost for the town with deep pockets of poverty, a reputation for crime and a feeling among many of being left by the wayside.

“A lot of people are poor and it has a reputation as a cut-throat place,” said Yasmina Bedar, who was born in Saint-Denis and has lived there for 50 years.

“For a king in real flesh and blood to come to Saint-Denis of course can only help our image,” she said, chatting with friends in the Le Khédive café where Charles stopped to sit down for a few minutes with job seekers.

Café owner Sid Ould-Moussa said, “It’s excellent for the town, for us.”

A retired judge has become Bermuda’s first person to receive the medal as Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire directly from King Charles III.

Retired Puisne Judge Norma Wade-Miller was elated after receiving the insignia this summer for her decades of service to the island’s legal community and the judiciary.

She was recognised in the 2016 New Year’s Honour’s List, but unable to undertake the journey to Britain — with the ceremony then delayed by the Covid-19 pandemic.

“It was a fantastic experience,” Mrs Justice Wade-Miller said of her meeting with the King at Windsor Castle.

“The King came down and greeted me, and said ‘I am so honoured that you came all this way to accept this’. I told him the honour was mine.

“He said he had read about my background and that I had been very, very busy. He asked if I had started to relax, and I enjoyed my chat with him.”

She was accompanied by her son, Yusef Wade, who whispered to her after the ceremony: “Mom, I’m very proud.”

The Prince and Princess of Wales headed to Hereford
14 Sept 2023

The Prince and Princess of Wales got back to nature today, exploring forest dens and whittling wood at an outdoor learning centre on a visit to Hereford. William and Kate joined children and staff at Madley Primary School’s Forest School, where outdoor learning is prioritised to boost children's physical and mental well being.

The Prince donned safety glasses and gloves to saw through a log, held steady by the Princess whose right hand was still bandaged from a trampolining injury. "Is William doing it right?" she asked the youngsters, who told her he was. She politely declined the offer of gloves for herself, saying: "I can't even put that on because I've got two fingers stuck together."

The Duchy of Cornwall is thought to view Madley School Forest School as a blueprint for others to potentially be created on Duchy land in future and as they left, William told the group: "We need more schools like this. How good would it be for more schools to have access to places like this?"

I believe the idea that children are not minature adults is a recent concept. Around 1900, kids from age 6 on were expected to work. If they attended school, it was only if their work schedule permitted. Prolonged "warm & fuzzy" childhoods, is a relatively new concept. Maybe Charles' upbringing was an upper crust carry over from those earlier times, and child raring theories? Like packing a kid off to boarding school.
Each to his/her own.

"King Charles III embarks Tuesday on a four-day trip to Kenya, his first visit as monarch to a Commonwealth nation, where any comments he makes on Britain's colonial past will be closely scrutinised."

"Charles is expected to tackle "the more painful aspects" of the UK's historic relationship with Kenya -- namely the period of British rule, which ended in 1963, Buckingham Palace has said."

"This will include the "Emergency" of 1952-1960, when colonial authorities imposed a state of emergency in response to the Mau Mau guerrilla campaign against European settlers."

"His Majesty will take time during the visit to deepen his understanding of the wrongs suffered in this period by the people of Kenya," the palace said this month, announcing the trip."

"King Charles III and Queen Camilla visited a war memorial during their trip to Kenya on Wednesday morning (1 November).
The royal couple took part in an act of remembrance alongside British and Kenyan troops during a visit to a Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemetery in Nairobi."

"Charles also presented medals to a Kenyan believed to be one of the world’s oldest surviving Second World War veterans after he lost his military honours.
The King handed the five medals to former corporal Samweli Mburia, during a poignant ceremony where other old soldiers who fought for Britain against Hitler’s regime also received replacements of their military honours. It is claimed Mr Mburia is 117 years old."
