Voting by mail could save lives.....

Especially amid the pandemic, it’s the surest path to a more inclusive, more accurate and more secure election.
The good news is that the primary season gave states a chance to run their elections with far more mail-in ballots than usual, and in many places the system worked well. But there were multiple high-profile examples of mail voting gone wrong. In Wisconsin, thousands of absentee ballots were requested and never received. In New Jersey, 10 percent of mail ballots were thrown out for arriving too late or for being otherwise deficient. In Pennsylvania, tens of thousands of absentee votes were either not cast or not counted, especially among voters who requested their absentee ballots closer to the election.

The American people need to be able to vote in the November election, and they need to be able to trust the outcome of that vote. What can be done over the next three months to make the process as accessible, accurate and secure as possible? Read on for the pros and cons of this.....

(I will not be standing in lines exposing myself to the virus so this option would be my only one)

IMO the expansion of voting by mail on paper ballots is a step backward.

If things stay about the same I will go to the polls and vote in person.

It's too late for this election but I think that some sort of online/telephone voting system should be developed in time for the next election.

The few people that don't at least have access to a telephone could still be allowed to vote at a polling place within their community or request a mail-in ballot.

I plan to vote in person...mask, staying at a distance, etc. Luckily our precinct is fairly small, and seldom is there a line of more than a half dozen. Our primary is Aug 4th, and I plan to be there around 10AM.

I suspect the November elections will be a Real Mess, especially in the more populated areas. Absentee/mail in ballots will probably not be counted accurately for days....and with the US postal service facing delays, in many areas, mail in ballots sent close to Nov. 3rd will probably be delayed.

This virus couldn't come at a worse time....I hope the vast majority find a way to have their vote count.

Yes, voting by mail opens your ballot to nonexistence, but it is not worth the risk to
go stand in line.
Living in a small town, I think I can pickup a ballot at city hall, fill it out and depart.
That still leaves the ballot open to skullduggery.

My state sends you a ballot in the mail, but then it gives you the option to bring it in to a drop-off place if you want, instead of mailing it in. Probably little or no waiting in line that way. I think that's what I'm going to do.

I agree with ya AB but ....... this is the one that so many want to be absentee. After this, I feel the demand for mail-in/absentee will dye off. But of course that remains to be seen ???

The point is to cast your vote. It doesn't matter how that's done. The idea that the US Mail will be fraught with all kinds of skullduggery is BS .Strangely, the US Post Office was competent enough to deliver millions of Covid 19 checks. USPS has been delivering absentee ballots for decades. I don't see what is gained by standing in line for hours at the polls. And more people may actually vote this time.

Been voting by mail in my state for years. For the upcoming election I will be placing my ballot in a drop box, in order not to overwhelm the postal service. Voting by mail has been proven to be successful and secure in my state.

We have to request a mail-in ballot, but my wife and I prefer voting in person. I like talking to the polling people outside and also stopping at the diner for coffee on the way to the poll.

It's what I did for the primaries Sunny. But my primary ballot came so late due to the slowdown in the mail that I was seriously worried.

I vote early in person, I don't live in fear. Anyone here can vote by absentee by mail if they wish. Not a problem at all.

Deluging a state with mailed ballots to folks that may or may not be at that address is not my idea of a secure election, those states that have been doing it for years may be different. I don't like ballot harvesting, that's rife for fraud.

When someone votes by mail they still have to prove who they are by an identification process that is only known to that person so I don't think that fraud is a possibility by those standards.

I am against voting by mail. The possibility of fraud is ginormous. If an process could be made safe, surely it is voting. Get more polling places, mandate masks, bring your own stylus to the voting booth.

Carol,. I have read that there's actually a bigger chance at the polls of your vote being lost, or not counted, or your giving up in disgust at the long waiting lines and just going home, than any chance you are taking with the mail.

Once again, we have to follow the advice of the experts, rather than just blindly acquiescing to every insane theory being proclaimed by someone who doesn't know what he is talking about.

If voting by mail was really that vulnerable to theft, fraud, etc., why would anyone be suggesting it? We could all stand to be cheated that way, if that were the only factor. Let's take a good look at where this "ginormous" theory is coming from, and why.

It took Washington state ten years to implement mail in voting, not exactly the time frame necessary for states to have the process ready for November 3 2020. It will be a mess, and those politicians pushing it know it.

You never know it may go alright too. Why be so negative about it?

Nothing new about that, Manatee. Remember when all those dead people in Chicago voted?
